Well The Solar Twins that little known one hit wonder band from England that split up just after releasing one album did have a good enough song to have a post on DestroyRockAndRoll.com. Although I have to say this version of Rock The Casbah is pretty darn good. Don’t get me wrong The Clash are awesome at that song but this Solar Twins is a great electronica interpretation. Released back in 1999 on Madonna’s Maverick Records Solar Twins self titled album is chock full of electronica, downtempo, drum and bass and ambient styles and this Rock The Casbah and Swayambhu are the standout cuts on the album. I guess it was good enough to end up on the Brokedown Palace soundtrack that was also released also in 1999. The rest of the album is just mediocre.

Check out both versions of Rock The Casbah below.

  2. Fear Of Flying by Vitamin C

I love this song by Vitamin C and I love the way the sample from The Magnificent Seven is used in the song. The singing is perfect one of the better Vitamin C songs and the beats. I like it when samples from original songs are used perfectly in newer songs and this actually really succeeds. I’m not sure about other Vitamin C songs as they tend to be pretty poppy but this song definitely has an edge to it especially since it’s utilizing the sample from The Clash.

Hey though Vitamin C aka Colleen Fitzpatrick is a pretty big star. She made her acting debut in the awesome John Waters film Hairspray. She played Amber Von Tussle. She did several movies after that but later she was in the band Eve’s Plumb. Remember them? The pop/punk band who were known for the Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons song December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night). Oh maybe we should blog about that song on Destroy Rock & Roll too.

Check it out and let me know what you think? Do you like the original the remake or both?

  3. It’s Gonna Be Alright (Original 2001 Mix) by Pussy 2000

This has got to be one of the best mash-up’s ever made. It came out before mash-ups were really in vogue and got big – so it’s done quite perfectly and it’s quite listenable compared to most mash-ups. The track incorporates elements of Rock The Casbah by The Clash and also It’s Alright by Sterling Void. Of course you’ll probably remember the Pet Shop Boys version of It’s Alright and not know that it’s originally done by Sterling Void.

I have both versions below as well as Rock The Casbah and The Pussy 2000 mash-up. Check them out and let me know what you think.
