  1. RuPaul Covers Depeche Mode With People Are People

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Since Depeche Mode came out with an amazing collection of remixes called Depeche Mode – Remixes 2: 81-11 I just had to share another Depeche Mode cover here and figured this remake of People Are People by RuPaul for the Depeche Mode 80s classic that got me introduced to the band was the one to put up. People are People is one of the rare songs that still sounds good today. Although People Are People is one of their more poppier songs I still love it and always seek out any remixes or remakes of this song. Unfortunately though I have not heard of any official remixes from Depeche Mode themselves and it’s rarely covered too. I hope when Depeche Mode release Remixes 3 they will actually finally remix this song as it deserves it! Yes?

But then again there’s this pretty darn good club/house remake by RuPaul! RuPaul you say? Well I guess she’s been making music since the mid 90s! This came out in 2005 but I somehow missed it when it came out but later discovered it somehow when I was searching for People Are People. The People Are People (Giuseppe D’s Rutroactive Club Mix) by RuPaul even contains samples of the machine sound effects from the original Depeche Mode version of People Are People. So I give RuPaul some credit for doing this. The original Depeche Mode versions of People Are People is still very special place in my heart. I was a very young teen and discovered this greatest new band Depeche Mode that produced this awesome electronic/synth pop dance music and since then I’ve been hooked on to the sounds of Depeche Mode. But I’m always looking for new versions of old songs and this just does it for me. The original version of People Are People is available on People Are People the album from Depeche Mode and also on Some Great Reward as well as their countless Greatest Hits albums. RuPaul’s version is off of People Are People the single with countless remixes of People Are People, on RuPaul Red Hot and RuPaul ReWorked. Check them out when you get a moment and discover new music!

  2. Everybody Be Somebody by Ruffneck Feat Yavahn Samples Bostich by Yello

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Everybody Be Somebody by Ruffneck featuring Yavahn was such a big hit when it came out  in 1995. I remember hearing it the first time thinking boy they sure did a great job sampling Yello with their 80s new wave dance hit Bostich. Bostich being one of my favorite synth, pop, new wave dance songs and recently had heard a techno remix by Joey Beltram back in 1992 off of FFRR’s Only For The Headstrong compilation, Ruffneck’s take on Bostich was fresh new and very clubby!

Basically if you haven’t heard Everybody Be Somebody it samples the Everybody Be Somebody vocals from Yello’s Bostich track and Yavahn sings the same words over a 4 to the floor house beat. The remixes for Everybody Be Somebody are quite nice too. My Favorite is the Pepermint Jam Remix but the original version still nice it’s a toss up for me between the original and the Peppermint Jam Remix but I also love the Henry Street Mix which adds a bit of a disco flavor, Benji Edit is quite nice, Hani’s Looooong Mix has been given a bit of a tribal treatment and the MAW Remix has a sound of your typical house club tune from the mid 90s. All good though and worth exploring.

    Enjoy!

  3. Sana Doris Samples Diana Ross Upside Down With Pseudo Wind

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is the strangest, gayest Diana Ross remake, sample, cover ever. I like it actually and it sounds like something RuPaul could have pulled off back in the 90s or it could have perfectly fit in the film Paris Is Burning from ’91. Though there’s no RuPaul here this remake called Pseudo Wind by Sana Doris comes to us by way of the In Flagranti guys by way of Codek Records. So it’s gotta be cool right? This is from the 12″ SOUNDS SUPERB VOL. 6 and it’s worth it. If you can’t get your hands on it do it as fast as you can. Or else  you have Pseudo Wind by Sana Doris below so you can sample that and check out In Flagranti for more disco dance flavored releases. I know you are a closet disco lover so go get some In Flagranti and enjoy! They have a very sleazy, naughty disco sound that once you taste you wont go back. Enjoy! and Enjoy the promo video below as well!

  4. New Years Dub by Musique Vs U2

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Ten years ago there was so much really excellent electronic music being released. So much creativity was around which included tons of releases like this track by Musique called New Years Dub which is basically a sampling New Years Day by U2. Apparently the band U2 was so into this cut by Musique that they approved this themselves and it turned out such a great dance hit for Musique. This New Years Dub track features a sample of The Edge’s famous guitar work as heard on the popular U2 track New Years Day. In fact this track basically sounds like a pretty darn good remix of New Years Day by U2. The single release also contains remixes by Hybrid and Mauro Picotto those of you are interested in checking those out. If you’re into U2 and also are into remixes, electronic music then this is perfect you will like this track. I do and I’m sure if you’re reading DestroyRockAndRoll.com then you will too.

  5. DJ Disse & Betina Bager Sample Fred Astaire With Cheek To Cheek

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

The electro-swing movement is alive and kicking in Europe but when is it going to really catch on here in the states? It’s a truly fun movement with loads of great releases! My first experience was buying the excellent G-Swing release back in 2006 when I visited Paris for the first time and it seems since then it’s gotten bigger and bigger with countless releases. For instance there’s been 3 Electro Swing releases and it’s not only the Electro Swing compilations. Here’s the list of Compilations available in this specific style/genre:

    Electro Swing – The Club
    Electro Swing 2
    Electro Swing 3
White Mink (Electro Swing Versus Speakeasy Jazz)
    Electronic Swing Affair
    Art Of Electro Swing
    The Electro Swing Revolution

And this is just a list of the compilations. There’s a whole list of artists that are releasing this style of music and have been for quite sometime now and it’s not only Parov Stelar that’s embraced this subgenre. There’s:
    Caravan Palace - Caravan Palace
Parov Stelar (multiple album releases) but start out with The Paris Swing Box EP!
Lyre Le Temps – Lady Swing
    Kormac – Word Play
Club De Belugas (mulitple album releases) but start out with SWOP!

    And many, many more!!

Well this remake of Fred Astaire’s Cheek To Cheek is one of those excellent remakes which basically samples Fred Astaire into a more upbeat electro-swing version of the original Cheek To Cheek by Fred Astaire. DJ Disse and Betina Bager do a very nice job here adding a quirkyness to it as it’s very bouncy and cartoony at times. You also here the tapping that’s a trademark of the era of this music and Fred Astaire himself. I discovered this version off of Electro Swing 3 but it’s also available as a single the Cheek To Cheek EP. Now we hope we can get more Fred Astaire Remixes album?? This isn’t the first Fred Astaire electro-swing remake either. Club Des Belugas SWOP includes a Puttin’ On The Ritz electro-swing version that’s also worth noting.

Anyone into remixes or jazz remixes especially will truly love this style of music. So enjoy both original version by Fred Astaire and the sampled remake of Cheek To Cheek by DJ Disse & Betina Bager below. If you like to hear more Electro Swing check out these posts on DestroyRockAndRoll.com.

  6. The Bucketheads Sample Movin’ by Brass Construction With Got Myself Together

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Taking disco and sampling it into house music in the 90s was a regular thing. It happened over and over again and I’m so happy that that era happened because two of my favorite styles of music had blended together to become an awesome style – disco house! Disco and House rule! Anyway this is a great example of that style. Take a Chicago house master like Kenny Dope and add a famous disco song from the 70s by Brass Construction, shake it up and end up with a classic 90s club hit by The Bucketheads!

Got Myself Together was the second hit off of The Bucketheads one and only awesome album All In The Mind didn’t become as big a hit as The Bomb was but it’s just as good if not better than The Bomb. I’m sure everyone remember The Bomb with the classic line “These Sounds Fall Into My Mind”? Then you will for sure remember The Bucketheads. The album All In The Mind even contained a 15 minute version of The Bomb for non stop beats. It’s a classic track now 15 years strong! Phew those were good times in the 90s! Weren’t they? All In The Mind is chock full of tracks utilizing samples from bands such as Chicago, Level 42, Atmosfear and Linda Clifford. Boy if you love music that is made up of samples then this album needs to be in your collection!

It was also so unique to discover a Latin/jazz version of Movin’ called Movin’ On by Ray Camacho of the Ray Camacho Band. All I have to say is that the 70s rules when it comes to music! Loads of cool hip styles were running all over. Kind of like the 90s and what’s starting to happen now again! Yay! Keep em comin’!

  7. Stylophonic Samples Della Reese With If Everybody In The World Loved Everybody In The World!

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Hey this is one of my favorite tracks from the 2000′s! It’s actually a midtempo, laidback vocal sampled electronic track from Stylophonic out of Italy. Not heard of it? Well this track If Everybody In The World Loved Everybody In The World samples the amazing Della Reese from her song Everybody In The World. The original is pretty darn cool, a political song that deserves to be listened to if you haven’t already and are into anything 60s, jazz, soul or R&B. Della’s version came out in 1969 from the album Black Is Beautiful a pretty darn amazing album. The Stylophonic sampled version out in 2002, almost 10 years now but still sounds fresh. It’s from the very underrated electronic album Man Music Technology. If you haven’t heard of this album it’s certainly worth it as there are some truly original cuts on here that deserve to be played. Key cuts from Man Music Technology are Soulreply, All Nite Long, Way Of Life (Featuring  Shock G & Humpty Hump) and Bizarre Mind.

This is one of those rare Brit rock tracks that I really dig. It samples one of my favorite recordings of all time (Love Is Like A) Heatwave by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas. That song goes down as one of my all time top 25 tracks and Black And White Town does an awesome job of sampling the part of Heatwave best. I’m not much a fan of Doves but after I heard of this I was sure enough checking out more from the band. Enjoy both Doves and Martha & The Vandellas tracks below.

  9. Walk The Line (Laurent Wolf Remix) by Laurent Wolf

Taking a classic country song like I Walk The Line by Johnny Cash and sampling it into a dance song is alright in my book. So when I first heard about Walk The Line by Laurent Wolf I immediately wanted to check it out. I had thoughts that it might suck or be boring but in reality it was quite cool. The sound is energetic electro with sections of the famous line ‘I Walk The Line” sung by Johnny Cash and sampled into track. It works in my book. It’s an upbeat, energetic banging electro club cut with a little bit of country thrown in. Trust me it’s not Rednex! Check it out … what do you think?

I Walk The Line by Johnny Cash
Walk The Line (Laurent Wolf Remix) by Laurent Wolf

The remix CD called Johnny Cash Remixed came out several years ago with remixes of Johnny Cash songs but I thought it was weak. Nothing like Verve Remixed or anything similar to that. Somebody did this remix project on a shoestring budget and didn’t quite achieve top notch remixes for this as I first thought I was totally going to dig it but it’s just ok in my book. 10. N-Joi Sample Gwen Guthrie’s Peanut Butter On Anthem

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

“I’m In Love With You, Want You To Love Me Too” is the famous line from Peanut Butter by Gwen Guthrie which is sampled in this most famous early house track by N-Joi. Anthem came out in 1991 to blow up everywhere and I was one of the first to get addicted to that famous line sung by Gwen Guthrie. Boy I sure didn’t know at the time that it was a sample being used in that track but later when I found out about it was like I like both tracks. Gwen Guthrie’s 80s sounding funk/hi-nrg style dance sound and of course the house classic by N-Joi. Peanut Butter is off of Gwen Guthrie’s album Portrait. Anthem originally a single in 91 later on the album Inside Out by N-Joi.

The Gary’s Gang tack Let’s Lovedance Tonight is a fun disco song from the 70s but I love what he’s done with his instrumental track Love Dancing. 12. A Bit Patchy by Switch

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This oversampled piece of music is a great obscure recording by the Michael Viner’s Incredible Bongo Band. It’s been used over and over again for one recording or another dating back to the 70s when it first came out. It’s a great funk underground classic that had a major resurgence back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The list of sampling is long vey long but until A Bit Patchy by Switch came out it was sampled in it’s bits and pieces. This A Bit Patchy incorporates the entire song into an original club tune using Apache cut by Michael Viner’s Incredible Bongo Band. The release has several remixes which you should check out here and one even from Eric Prydz but I still enjoy the original A Bit Patchy since it’s the closest to Apache but with the added club beat sounds of today. Actually this release is from 2005 but still sounds fresh now.

  14. Malente Sample That’s The Way (I Like It) by KC & The Sunshine Band

This is a really fun groovy remix of I Like It by Malente. The original version of I Like It is quite similar to the original That’s The Way (I Like It) by KC & The Sunshine Band but this remix by Riva Star gives it a little different twist to the disco sound and makes it more up to date and hip club friendly. Overall Malente has taken and old tired disco song that you’ve probably have been hearing for 30+ years and have found it on countless compilations and made it better and more now. Anyone into disco will enjoy both the original I Like It which you can see in the video below and the Riva Star remix below. Feel free to sample the The KC & The Sunshine Band’s version as well. 16. Visti & Meyland Sample Ora Dell Graham With Yes Maam!

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I’ve been listening to Visti & Meyland’s Yes Maam for a couple of years now. I discovered it on a compilation called Rasa Exotica 3. Didn’t really think much about it when I first started listening to this song but later it really grew on me. I was really interested in finding out where the sample comes from and I was definitely going to find out. Searching around online I found out that Trentemoller had also done a remix of Yes Maam which gives it the more electro club groove to it. The original is more chill with a beat. So I finally found out after researching online that Yes Maam incorporates a sample from Ora Dell Graham’s Little Girl, Little Girl. I was able to find the album that it came off of as well. The sample is pretty short – about 25 seconds in all that’s the entire length of the song on the compilation album called Afro-American Blues and Game Songs.

This isn’t the first time that an electronic band or musician has sampled old blues recordings. The compilation Afro-American Blues and Game Songs contains songs by Vera Hall as well. If you remember Vera Hall or if you don’t know of her music then you’ll probably recognize her voice on Moby’s very successful album Play with the song Natural Blues. Her song was called Troubled So Hard and Moby had sampled Vera Hall’s recording and made it into a very popular downtempo electronic beat. Love that song and I’m still very happy to hear of great sampling jobs happening with electronic musicians.

The album Visti & Meyland also contains a cover of Nightclubbing the Iggy Pop and Grace Jones song which I think is pretty cool and another hit track called Stars.

Going back to Yes Maam, I have heard of a version of Yes Maam with a rap thrown in it and I think that version sucks! Please, please don’t throw a Goddamn rap in every damn song. I hate the version of this with the rap it makes it too poppy and gives it a mass produced pop song quality and takes away from the Ora Dell Graham sample. It kind of puts it down because the rap is so damn huge and raw the female voice much more gentle so it comes off pretty bad. Stay away from the rap version of Yes Maam and go right to the original version. And the remix by Trentemoller is great too. Enjoy!

  17. Love Won’t Leave Me Alone by Kenneth Bager Samples Theme From ‘A Summer Place’ by Percy Faith Orchestra

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Theme from A ‘Summer Place’ by Percy Faith falls into cheesy elevator music territory. It’s a piece of music that most anyone will recognize when they hear it. I love though what Kenneth Bager has done by sampling Theme From ‘A Summer Place’. Check out the original and sampled version by Kenneth Bager below. The new version contains the haunting violin music of Jean Luc Ponty and the beautiful vocals of Nikolaj Grandjean singing Love Won’t Leave Me Alone … when you’re gone. I think this is a great job at sampling something that most folks will recognize and making it completely different where you’ll want to hear it where as Them From ‘A Summer Place’ in it’s original form you kind of skip or turn off if it ever came on. Check them out below. And download the rest of Kenneth Bager’s album Fragment From A Space Cadet. It’s an awesome album and there are  several masterpieces including two tracks by Julie Cruise from Twin Peaks fame. She does a remake of Les Fleur on Fragments. So this is a great collection of chill electronic vocal and instrumental cuts.
