  1. Matt Helders Ft. Nesreen Shah Cover Dreamer by Livin’ Joy

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This song was such a big deal for me back in the mid 90s that I overplayed it. It was a big pop dance crossover hit from Italy. Later I also discovered a Rollo remix and started playing that version as well. So it has a special place for me as it was def one of the bigger dance pop tunes that came out in the 90s. I was quick to want to check out when I heard about a remake of it. Sure to my surprise it’s a pretty darn cool version by Matt Helders featuring Nesreen Shah. Matt Helders is the drummer from the Arctic Monkeys and I have not idea who Nesreen Shah is but they have certainly updated a club classic 90s dance pop song and made it quite the energetic drummified bouncy update. I like it. What do you think? The track is from Ministry Of Sounds Uncovered CD which is a real cool collection of covers remakes etc. Well worth it to own!

  2. Lollipop (Squeak E. Clean & Desert Eagles Remix) by The Chordettes

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I’m really digging this remix of Lollipop The Chordettes song from the late 50s. It’s been given the extra bassy treatment but it’s really short like the original song itself. The original song I’m sure you’ve heard countless times is a cute innocent late 50s pop hit but this ones got a bit of gritty inner city feel to it even including a recognizable beat from Tone Loc’s Wild Thing. I’m sure you’ll recognize it once you hear it. I love it. Found this recently on the Whip It (film) soundtrack and wasn’t even aware that a remix has been done to this song and I’m happy to have discovered it.

  3. Edwin Van Cleef Remixes Daniel By Bat For Lashes

I’ve really been digging Edwin Van Cleef’s sound and I was happy to have heard of this remix to the Bat For Lashes hit song Daniel. Not a real big fan of Bat For Lashes mysefl …  I could take it or leave it really but this remix does wonders to the song and I’m really happy to hear remixes of songs that I don’t really like remixed and made to sound better. It makes me love some songs even more. And this one I love, the remix that is. What do you think of the two? Which is better than the other?

  4. Tim Tim Sample Andrews Sisters With Rum ‘N’ Coca Cola

Being the big fan of electro swing I quickly fell in love with this version of Rum And Coca-Cola originally recorded by The Andrews Sisters. This version by Tim Tim gives the song the island, Jamaican reggaefied party vibe feel along with the ragga rapping and cute girl vocals and incorporated with the awesome sample from the original Andrews Sisters song. Very bouncy and will get your party shaking. I highly recommend this version as I love it and I’m sure you will too.

  5. Billie Jean by Shinehead

The anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death came and went last week so I figured I’d do at least one post of a cover or sample or remix of a famous Michael Jackson track. I figured posting about this Shinehead cover of his big hit Billie Jean. I only discovered this cover a little over ten years ago and it dates way back to just after Mr. Jackson had released his big hit – 1984. I love this remake and I love how it has a very chill summery hot sunny sound to it. It’s perfect in Shineheads trademark dub and dancehall style. From Shinehead’s album Rough & Rugged. Bet you didn’t know this cover existed did you?

  6. Lily Allen Covers Mr. Blue Sky by ELO (Electric Light Orchestra)

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Ran across this awesome compilation series from France called La Musique De Paris Derniere. I believe these are compilations from a French TV show but I would need to do some research first to be correct. These compilations contain remakes, remixes of well known songs. Including this unreleased version of a very bouncy, poppy Lily Allen remake of the ELO classic Mr. Blue Sky. It’s fun and the recording is in her typical style. So if you’re a fan of Lily Allen then this is right up your alley. Check them both out below. And do check out the series as there are 7 discs now and all are fun. I love them. There remakes of so many songs you are familiar with I’m sure. Including:

    Beat Goes On
    Light My Fire
    I Can’t Get No Satisfaction
    Dancing Queen
    Happy Together
Can’t Take My Eyes Off You
    Ashes To Ashes
    What A Wonderful World
    Space Oddity
    The Girl From Ipanema
    Like A Virgin
    Highway To Hell
    Walk On By
    Proud Mary
    Hotel California
    Billie Jean
    Da Ya Think I’m Sexy
    Tainted Love

And many, many more remakes by lesser known acts, new bands old ones etc. So I highly recommend these compilations click the album artwork below to download more tracks from this great series called La Musique De Paris Derniere.

  7. I’m Not Scared by Eighth Wonder & Pet Shop Boys

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I’m Not Scared was produced and recorded for Patsy Kensit’s band Eighth Wonder but it became such a hit for Eighth Wonder the Pet Shop Boys decided to record it themselves as well and release it on their dance album Introspective in a complete orchestral/dance version. Their both the same song but sound completely different where the Eight Wonder version is more pop dance with touches of Hi-NRG and the Pet Shop Boys version being dramatic Hi-NRG. Both great versions. The versions below are the Disco Version of Eighth Wonder’s I’m Not Scared (the original version off their Fearless album) and the Introspective version from the Pet Shop Boys.

Loving this track Something Good Can Work by Two Door Cinema Club lately and they really remind me of Phoenix! Don’t you think? Funny that both Phoenix and Two Door Cinema Club are on the same damn label, Glassnote. As well they have some relationship with the awesome French label Kitsune. Two Door Cinema Club are from Ireland and not from France like Phoenix.

I like this remake of the classic Hall & Oates song I Can’t Go For That by The Bird And The Bee. This is taken from the Bird And The Bee album called Interpreting The Masters – A Tribute To Darryl Hall And John Oates. The album is full of Hall & Oates covers with the Bird And The Bee frontwomans trademark vocals. Cute and mellow tracks with a 70s radio feel you can chill to at home or relax to on your way to work.

Here’s the list of songs on the album:

The original and the Lifelike Remix of In For The Kill are completely different and I first discovered La Roux by hearing the Lifelike Remix which I downloaded from Emusic from a Kitsune compilation. The Flirts, the one hit wonder all girl disco 80s group produced by Bobby O that’s only known for their one hit Jukebox do have other songs. One being Passion. It’s quite a cool track dating back to the early 80s. Felix Da House perfecly sampled the bassline from Passion by The Flirts in his very popular hit Silver Screen Shower Scene from his amazing album Kittenz And Thee Glitz. The sample works perfectly here and compliments Miss Kittin’s quirky accented singing.

Check them both out below, you’ll realize once you hear The Flirts and you’ll hear where the sample for Silver Screen Shower Scene comes from. Both very cool!

I think Mylo’s album Destroy Rock And Roll is genius! I’m mean come on? I’ve got a whole website named after it right? I think it’s one of the best albums of the 2000’s. It’s perfection and this track In My Arms is a great example of a sampling job done perfectly. Mylo has taken the classic Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes and made his own song In My Arms. I’m sure most of you have heard it but did you know it contained a sample of the high energy pop song Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes? Well now you do. Check them out both below and you’ll see.

Bette Davis Eyes is off of Kim’s Mistaken Identity album from 1981. Almost 30 years old now. I was only 10! Enjoy.

  18. Solar Twins Cover The Clash With Rock The Casbah

    Destroy-Rock-And-Roll-Remix-Remake-Solar-Twins-Rock-The-Casbah

Well The Solar Twins that little known one hit wonder band from England that split up just after releasing one album did have a good enough song to have a post on DestroyRockAndRoll.com. Although I have to say this version of Rock The Casbah is pretty darn good. Don’t get me wrong The Clash are awesome at that song but this Solar Twins is a great electronica interpretation. Released back in 1999 on Madonna’s Maverick Records Solar Twins self titled album is chock full of electronica, downtempo, drum and bass and ambient styles and this Rock The Casbah and Swayambhu are the standout cuts on the album. I guess it was good enough to end up on the Brokedown Palace soundtrack that was also released also in 1999. The rest of the album is just mediocre.

Check out both versions of Rock The Casbah below.

The Orb remixing Lisa Stansfield? Yes it actually really does work and I love this a little more than the original. The Orb add their signature spacey dub electronic ambient sound to Lisa Stansfield original and make it a long droning chugging adventure. The end result is 10 minute ambient dub adventure. Perfect to chill to with the soulful vocals of Lisa Stansfield. Check both versions out below and you’ll know what I’m talking about. It’s perfect.

This remix of Love Shack by The B-52’s goes back to 1999 – ten years ago and it’s a pretty darn awesome remix by DJ Tonka. Not sure really who this DJ Tonka is but if I ever play Love Shack by The B-52’s this is the version that I play. Love Shack is now 20 years old! Darn I feel old but this version is still pretty darn fresh. It’s much more upbeat and the bassline is what’s going on in this remix. The original Love Shack from Cosmic Thing was a pretty flat track so this kicks things way up! Check them both out below. The remix was part of a bigger package along with Hallucinating Pluto for The B-52’s Time Capsule Greatest Hits disc that was coming out shortly after. Love this song When You’re Around by Frankmusik. It’s a cover of the Stranglers new wave punk classic Golden Brown. I love that Frankmusik has taken it and given it a little electro life. Increasing the bpm and making it a bit frenetic which perfectly works. The original by the Stranglers is pretty darn good and a classic now but I love a fresh take on a classic track and Frankmusik has done that perfectly. What do you think?

Here’s a pretty darn good sample of the Hall & Oates track I Can’t Go For That in Simply Red’s track Sunrise. The song itself is really good and the sample of the Hall & Oates track I Can’t Go For That just works perfectly. Some of the lyrics to Sunrise changes over to the Hal & Oates song in Sunrise and comes back to the Sunrise lyrics. So it’s well done. This track Sunrise is off of the Simply Red album Home. A perfect blend of vocal R&B, pop and jazziness. The singles from the release including Sunrise and also Home and Fake all have remixes available.
