Mix, mash, and turn stale poker music into the bomb

Supercharge your poker playlist with remixes and mashups

Is your poker night playlist getting stale? Are you and your poker buddies tired of hearing the same songs over and over again? If so, then it’s time to kick things up a notch. You don’t even have to make a new playlist from scratch. Just take the songs from the old one and turn them into remixes and mashups.

Remixes are pretty common these days, especially in hip hop. A remixed song is basically an edited version that is made to sound different from the original. The best examples would probably be those slow ballads turned into fast dance tracks. Germany is one country that lives and breathes remixes. There’s even a chiptune remix collective called the German Remix Group that focuses solely on remixing old computer game music. German DJ and producer Paul van Dyk is another popular remix artist.

A mashup, on the other hand, is a fancy word for a song made by combining two or more songs. Sometimes, the combined songs come from widely different genres, like laying Serj Tankian’s Toxicity vocals over an instrumental bed from Coldplay’s The Scientist. The results can be jarring at times, but if done right you’d be surprised at how well songs from different genres mesh together. The whole mashup movement began as a British phenomenon, but Germany, France, and the U.S.A. are now leading the scene.

You can also make your poker playlist more interesting by throwing in a few tracks from musicians who are also into poker. Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, for example is such a hardcore poker fan that he has even competed in World Series of Poker tournaments while in the middle of a hectic summer tour. He has also participated in PartyPoker’s World Poker Tour. KISS bassist Gene Simmons, meanwhile, has his own charity poker tournament. Looking for a something a little more laid back? Mixing thrash and hard rock with electronic beats should make for an interesting exercise.
