  1. Everybody Be Somebody by Ruffneck Feat Yavahn Samples Bostich by Yello

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Everybody Be Somebody by Ruffneck featuring Yavahn was such a big hit when it came out  in 1995. I remember hearing it the first time thinking boy they sure did a great job sampling Yello with their 80s new wave dance hit Bostich. Bostich being one of my favorite synth, pop, new wave dance songs and recently had heard a techno remix by Joey Beltram back in 1992 off of FFRR’s Only For The Headstrong compilation, Ruffneck’s take on Bostich was fresh new and very clubby!

Basically if you haven’t heard Everybody Be Somebody it samples the Everybody Be Somebody vocals from Yello’s Bostich track and Yavahn sings the same words over a 4 to the floor house beat. The remixes for Everybody Be Somebody are quite nice too. My Favorite is the Pepermint Jam Remix but the original version still nice it’s a toss up for me between the original and the Peppermint Jam Remix but I also love the Henry Street Mix which adds a bit of a disco flavor, Benji Edit is quite nice, Hani’s Looooong Mix has been given a bit of a tribal treatment and the MAW Remix has a sound of your typical house club tune from the mid 90s. All good though and worth exploring.

    Enjoy!

  2. Jam Hot (Tensnake Remix) by Johnny Dynell

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Jam Hot by Johnny Dynell and New York 88 is most famously known as the sample for the Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim produced Beats International track Dub Be Good To Me. The famous line “tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty you’re listening to the boy from the big bad city, this is Jam Hot, this is Jam Hot” is lifted right off the Jam Hot single by Johnny Dynell and New York 88. I should do a post on that at a later time. Jam Hot originally came out in 1983 almost 30 years old now and it has a very New York, new wave dance sound to it. Later in the early 90s it was rereleased and remixed. But I first heard of this excellent track by  listening to a compilation called Future Disco Vol. 3 – City Heat. This version on Future Disco Vol. 3 was the most recent remix by Tensnake who I absolutely love the sound of. I was like boy this is a darn great remix which actually takes me back to the beginnings of the deep house days. I had to research and find out more about Jam Hot by Johnny Dynell. Well I found a whole history for this excellent track. The remix is off of the Big Breakdown/Jam Hot Remixes package which was released last year. It’s an excellent ep of great new remixes of Jam Hot and Big Breakdown from todays and yesterdays remixers. The remixers include Tensnake of course, Peter Rauhofer, Mark Kamins, 40 Thieves, Illija Rudman and Clouded Vision which makes up for a very worthy collection that you should check out! Go get Big Breakdown/ Jam Hot Remixes now you’ll love it!!

  3. Until December (12″ Inch Version)/We Are The Boys (12″ Inch Version) by Until December

Do you even know who Until December Is? I think everyone should know about this totally underrated, undiscovered 80s high energy dance act who’s music had slight touches of goth and new wave. They were signed to Columbia back in 1986 and released one album called Until December. I was lucky enough to have lived in San Francisco Bay Area in the 80s and had one of the best radio stations around – Live 105. It’s crap now but hey from 86 until about 1992 it was the best station ever. It was where you would discover those cool bands that no one knew about. Listening to Live 105 is how I discovered Until December. They have totally disappeared now but have really left us with two of the best 80s high energy dance songs ever! Two of their greatest 12″ versions are below – their self titled song Until December and We Are The Boys! Both awesome!

Trust me this is the best there is! What happened to them? Adam Sherburne one of the members started the industrial dance band Consolidated. Cool I liked their first album and loved the track Consolidated. Guess where I first heard Consolidated?

Anyway if you like what you hear check out the 415 Sessions (415 is the area code here in San Francisco) and get more Until December. You will find their entire first album plus loads of remixes and covers of Bela Lugosi Is Dead by Bahaus and Call Me by Blondie. Now that’s totally worth it!

  4. Moskow Diskow (Carl Craig Remix–Single Edit) by Telex

Moskow Diskow (or Discow) is one of those rare classic synth pop, new wave tracks that wont go out of style. First released in 1979 off of the Looking For Saint Tropez album it became a classic right away and a huge club hit in The States in the 80s putting the Belgian band in the same caliber as Kraftwerk as their music is quite similar to Kraftwerk’s. I love a good remix and this remix Moskow Diskow by Carl Craig came out in 1998 and it basically updates the classic synth sound of the original Moskow Diskow which I still love. There’s a whole bunch of new remixes of Moskow Diskow that came out last year but this Carl Craig remix is still very fresh today as it’s very much keeping the 80s synth sound with a 90s remix production but with the 80s sound in vogue currently the original English version and French version of Moskow Diskow are pretty darn cool all over again! Enjoy below.

  5. Work For Love (Extended Version) by Ministry – The Best Song Never Remade!

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

One of my favorite songs ever from the 1980s is Ministry’s classic new wave synth pop track Work For Love. Gosh the direction they went is completely mind boggling but whatever. I didn’t at all mind them when they went in the industrial direction in the late 80s but after that it was complete punk/speed metal chaos craziness that I didn’t enjoy as much. The album that put them on the map for me is With Sympathy a classic 80s synth pop new wave dance album which includes this song Work For Love and of course Effigy (I’m Not An).

I would love to see one day a great reinterpretation or remix or even a new track that samples this classic 80s cut. Recently Work For Love (Dub Version) was featured on Fabric 43 – the mix CD by Metro Area which was good to hear just after Share The Night (Breakdown Mix) by World Premiere and before Move To The Groove (Instrumental) by Disco Four. It was an awesome mix by Metro Area that I highly recommend and Ministry fit perfectly in the mix. Below is the Extended Version of Work For Love. Those of you that don’t know Ministry’s dance stuff you’ll surely by caught off guard because it’s nothing like really late 80s early to mid 90s stuff they released on Sire/Reprise and Warners label. With Sympathy was released by Arista Records! Enjoy!

  6. Spooks In Space (Luke Howard & Felix Dickinson Edit) by Aural Exciters

This one’s a really quirky, fun sort of on the leftfield disco, new wave, no wave track that I really dig. I didn’t know anything about this really cool disco cut when I was growing up. I discovered it about 10 years ago after picking up the excellent disco compilation Mutant Disco from ZE Records. It’s fun really fun. Finally just earlier this year I discovered this more updated remix of the classic cut from ’79 and all I can say is it’s awesome! There’s not much difference between the two versions except that it’s slightly faster and a little groovier. If you don’t know ZE Records then you certainly have to check it out. It’s an underground New York disco/new wave label which features some really cool acts like Kid Creole & The Coconuts, Material with Nona Hendryx, Was (Not Was), Cristina, Garcons, The Waitresses, Suicide, James White & The Blacks, Caroline Loeb and many many more acts definitely worth discovering.

Finding a remix of one of my favorite songs by INXS let alone one of my favorite songs of the 80s was a pretty cool thing and I love this remix/remake of the INXS song Original Sin by Kash.  Whos is Kash? I don’t really know but they’ve got a great bouncy club remake of this awesome new wave masterpiece. The song that put INXS on the map off of their first album has been given the remix treatment. The original version is off the INXS album The Swing from 1984.

This is a very lively remake/cover/remix of the M new wave/synth pop classic Pop Muzik by Second Sun. Faster and energized and given the full on electronic and dance touch perfectly by Second Sun. This comes off of their Uncovered Ep. Worth it for anyone into 80s music or electronic and dance tracks. The video by M to Pop Muzik is so much fun and brings back those 80s memories. Love it!

I’m really digging this. I love the synth bass line in the Human League awesome track Don’t You Want Me. So basically Spirit Catcher have taken that bass line and sampled it in this remix of the Scratch Massive track Shining In My Vein. This is actually quite nice. Scratch Massive are an electro act from Paris, France. Check it out and let me know what you think. The remix is taken from the “Underground Needs Your Money Baby” album.

  10. Fade To Grey by Fierce Ruling Diva

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This Visage remake/remix of Fade To Grey came out way back in 1994 and it still sounds pretty good. It’s a pretty good remake of the new romantics new wave classic written by Midge Ure and Steve Strange.

Check out the album Revolt Of The Perverse as it contains a really kicking track called Pissing In The Wind. And who can forget I Need Drugs! Those were the good old days of techno and rave music! The fun days. If you can find this album do buy it as it’s worth it just for Fade To Gray and you get two bonus cuts!

  11. Ant Music by Hyper

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is a really nice remake of the Adam And The Ants classic track from the 80s – Ant Music. It’s been energized and sounds nice and upbeat and has a fierce punk attitude by Hyper. Of course the original is a classic track and reached #2 on the UK charts when it first came out but this version by Hyper is all underground and not getting close to the pop charts – which is the way it’s got to be.
    Shouldn’t it?

  12. Crockett’s Theme (Original) by FPU

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is an excellent remake of the classic new wave/new age electronic synth track by Jan Hammer. The original was on the Miami Vice soundtrack which I was somewhat a fan of – the soundtrack, both 1 and 2 were pretty good. Volume 2 even had a track by The Damned of all bands.

This version is pulled off of the Crockett’s Theme/Ocean Drive single by FPU which also contains a great Tiga vocal Ocean Drive but this version. This version is quite nicely updated. It has a nice electronic beat and it’s the same music but the synth sound of the 1980′s is not here any longer. This new version by FPU sounds just like something that would come out today. Even though this version is several years old it still works here and still sounds quite fresh.

I’m glad that this remake was done as I’ve always loved Crockett’s Theme but it sounded so 80′s once it got a couple of years old so this remake has made it much more now. I kind of dread the bad 80′s guitar touch in the original 80′s Jan Hammer version.

Check it out and listen to the two versions. Leave a comment about what you think of the two different versions.

  13. Relax (Jam & Spoon Hi N-R-G Remix) by Frankie Goes To Hollywood

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Remix a classic song like Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood? Fuck yea! Do it and do it even more. This remix set came out back in 1993, just around the corner from the release of the Frankie Goes To Hollywood greatest hits set and I immediately went crazy for the Jam & Spoon Hi N-R-G Remix. I knew Jam & Spoon from their awesome trance classic “Stella” track and was searching out more from Jam & Spoon so this was a great find and true it’s quite awesome!

I absolutely love this remix. It starts out quite slow and euphoric with a very long build up and then it becomes so fast and furious that it can bring the house down. It’s kicking so hard. It’s quite awesome.

Check it out and compare the original with the remix. I think you will see a totally different track. Way to go Jam & Spoon. I don’t know what those guys are up to these days but this is them in major top form. Immediately after this remix for Frankie Goes To Hollywood Jam & Spoon released Tripomatic Fairytales 2001. One of the better electronic albums of the 1990s. If you don’t have it then you should definitely find it and own it!

There’s been countless other remixes that have been done for Relax but this Jam & Spon Hi N-R-G Remix is a cut above the rest!

    Enjoy!
