  1. What Is This Thing Called Love (Mocean Worker Remix) by Keely Smith

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is a pretty darn good remix of What Is This Thing Called Love, the Keely Smith jazz classic by Mocean Worker. It’s starts pretty upbeat and gets into frenetic territory. Not in a bad way but in a pretty darn good way. This remix is off of the Electro Lounge 2 disc which has music by other jazz legends including Julie London, Les Baxter, Martin Denny among others. Mocean Worker was the perfect person to do this remix and this remix definitely sounds like some of the stuff he’s done on his own albums so it turns out to be a winning remix here. The original What Is This Thing Called Love song by Keely Smith is on the Swingin’ Pretty album. Both below.

So if you are at all into the Verve Remixed series I would hunt this disc down as some of the remixes on here are pretty darn good. It’s out of print now but I’m sure you can still find at amazon or other places that sell used music.

I really love Parov Stelar’s music and his new album is pretty darn awesome. I’ve heard it and it’s a double album as well as a pretty nice Coco ep. So some really cool jazzy electronica dance whch heavily relies on the swing era with a slight touch of the blues. I love most of the tracks on here. Anyone into the whole swing revival thing would really dig these tunes. Or they would be perfect for a swing/jazz era themed party.

Poke around and listen to tracks. They are all fun!

I love this … [Re: Jazz] have taken the Lisa Stansfield dance pop smash and made it into a jazzing vocal track and I think it works perfectly. Don’t you think? Check the two versions out and write a comment. The [Re: Jazz] version is much more mellower and of course perfect played by [Re: Jazz]. I can just picture it performed in an intimate jazz club whereas the version by Lisa Stansfield is perfect in a nightclub or heard from a radio station. I love them both.

Also the original Lisa Stansfield version is produced by Coldcut!! Nice one.

  6. Midsummer Night Blues by Waldeck

This is awesome … from the great electro swing revival/movement happening in Europe now comes a great track called Midsummer Night Blues by Waldeck. Midsummer Night Blues is off of his album Ballroom Stories. It’s an excellently made album utilizing sounds from the great swing and jazz era with many samples and of course mostly electronica and pop elements with updated production an Midsummer Night Blues samples elements of great Gershwin track Summertime sung by so many great folks. The version I have below is the version by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. I felt that the music behind their version was the closest to the sampled sound from the Waldeck samples.

I could be wrong but it felt like it’s the right version.

  7. The Tango I Saved for You (from the film Gaily, Gaily) (Zeb’s The Tango I Stole From You Remix) by Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra/Henry Mancini

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is such a beautiful piece of music as I love both the original by Henri Mancini and the remix by Zeb. It’s from a film that I have not seen called Gaily, Gaily but anything with Henry Mancini’s music is worth at least checking out. Well the music that is.

Zeb has added the jazzy downtempo touch to the original and spiced it up a little but still the original can be heard in the new remix.

This remix is off of the album Cinematic: Classic Film Music Remixed – and contains awesome chill, jazzy, moody downtempo cuts. I love the whole disc. The oddest cut off the disc is an updated remix of a track from the Carrie soundtrack. Boy that sure is creepy! But the disc is definitely worth owning for the rest of the cuts for sure.

What do you think of the two versions?

  8. Useless (Kruder + Dorfmeister Session) by Depeche Mode

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I actually love this remix of Depeche Mode’s Useless by Kruder & Dorfmeister much more than the original synth pop/rock track. It’s been given their signature remixing style that they have come to be known for but you can still hear the great vocals of Dave Gahan. It’s perfect for background cocktail party chilling.

I’m so happy that we have a great band like Depeche Mode! They obviously are not afraid to hire out the greatest remixers of the era to add a new sound to their current releases. I give them an A+ as a band! Go for it – I hear they have a new album coming out so I can’t wait to hear some tracks from it soon.

This Kruder & Dorfmeister remix is also available in an edited form off the awesomely amazing K&D Sessions along with great trip hop bands like Lamb, Sofa Surfers and David Holmes.

The version here is from their Home/Useless CD Single. What do you think? Which version is your favorite?

  9. Good Life by Kaori

Here’s a jazzed up version of Inner City’s Good Life by Kaori. I found this version on Saint-Germain des Pres Cafe volume 2 and I was surprised at how good this version is. I love the original by Inner City as it’s a pretty big classic from the late 80s when dance music was breaking so this new version by Kaori breathes new life into the original.

  10. Diga Diga Doo by G-Swing feat. DJ Brame

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I love Diga Diga Doo by The Mills Brothers in it’s original form but when I heard it on G-Swing’s Swing For Modern Clubbers CD I couldn’t get quite enough of it. It’s been beefed up and sped up quite nicely and it’s perfect for any club that wants to throw in some swing style dance beats in their mix. It’s also perfect for listening to while in a car or on your iPod at home. The vocals are still the same as this is just a remix but the credits on the Swing For Modern Clubbers CD says DJ Brame. I don’t know much about DJ Brame but this remake is quite nice.

The rest of the Swing For Modern Clubbers CD is quite nice too. There are some really great cuts on the disc including a vocal track by Rossy Depalma. Check out the tracklist below. There are remixes by Lindstrom on the disc as well.

Here’s the track list for the entire disc.

    1. Sing Sing Sing
    2. Ring Dem Bells
    3. Busy Line
    4. I’m Crazy ‘Bout My Baby
    5. Don’t Be That Way
    6. Calor
    7. Run Joe
    8. Diga Diga Doo
    9. Goin’ Nuts
    10. Figs And Dates
    11. Twenty Long Years
    12. Promised Land
    13. Caravan
    14. Heartbreaker

If you question why old time music should be remixed I say because it’s a great art and we should do more of it. I love albums like this and more and more remixes should be done of well known tracks from yesteryear. Let’s remix everything, right?

Check the two version of Diga Diga Doo and let me know what you think. Also check out the promo video for the Swing For Modern Clubbers album.

  11. Just One Of Those Things (Brazilian Girls Remix) by Blossom Dearie

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Just One Of Those Things (Brazilian Girls Remix) by Blossom Dearie is off of the Verve Remixed 3 release. The series basically takes old jazz recordings and updates them with current musicians mostly producing electronic music. I love the series myself very much and all 4 albums now (there’s been 4 releases so far – the last came out last year) and 1 bonus album have some really great updates on them so they are certainly worth checking out if you haven’t. I have all four definitely and will continue as long as they continue – which is what I’m hoping for.

This remix by Brazilian Girls is pretty intense – the original has the light jazz intensity but Brazilian Girls have taken the track and really sped it up. Which I really do like because you have a jazz track on SPEED. Love it. I’ve been a fan of Blossom Dearie since I first heard this track so I’ve been really enjoying her regular jazz music. But this is the track that got me introduced to her cute little jazzy voice.

Check it out – see what you think of the two versions. Let me know what you think.

  12. Gypsy Woman (Acapella) vs Gypsy Woman (Dim’s Special Re–Touch) by Crystal Waters vs Montefiori Cocktail

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Here’s a song that came out way back in 1991 around the time when house and dance music was just about to explode. It’s a great pop dance track and has a nice groovy beat to it. Crystal Waters was just an up and coming singer when this came – she later had another song 100% Pure Love a couple of years later but this was the song that put her on the map. I especially love the La Da Di La Di Da part as it’s quite catchy!

This version is totally different and it’s excellent. It’s been given the jazzy loungy treatment by Montefiori Cocktail from Italy. it’s still quite upbeat but you got the big band horns and the live orchestra sounds that goes along with the jazzy feel. I absolutely love it. This version though comes off of the Dimitri From Paris In The House – off of the 3rd disc that is unmixed. Dimitri From Paris has added the Acapella of Gypsy Woman to the instrumental remix of it by Montefiori Cocktail. Check it out and let me know what you think of the two different versions. I think the new version is quite more now and it doesn’t sound so dated like the original does. Boy when I hear the original version it certainly takes me back. Way back to 1991! Long time ago!
