  1. Benny Berigan Covers The John Buzon Trio With Caravan

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is a really fun electro-swing version of the old John Buzon Trio version of Caravan by Benny Berigan. This is Benny Berigan from now and not the Benny Berigan that died in 1942 who also performed the recording. The original version of Caravan was written by Juan Tizol and sometimes also credited to Irving Mills but he’s only credited for the vocal versions. Countless jazz musicians and later exotica musicians have covered or remade Caravan. It’s been sampled and remixed throughout the years. My favorite version so far is the exotica version by The John Buzon Trio until I discovered the Benny Berigan version on an electro-swing compilation.

There’s also a very nice remixed version of The John Buzon Trio exotica version of Caravan remixed by Eat Static which I think is still excellent since it’s been 10+ years since that remix came out. I’m glad to have discovered this Eat Static Remix. It’s off an excellent compilation that is out of print called Electro Lounge – Electronic Excursions In Hi-Fi Stereo. Loads of great old jazz and exotica recordings that are excellently remixed. Most are still fresh today. Remixes included on this collection are Q-Burns Abstract Message Remixing Yma Sumac, Omni Trio remixing John Barry, Wagon Christ remixing April Stevens, Utah Saints remixing King Curtis and many more. I love it!

The Benny Berigan version is from an ep that’s available called the Caravan Adaptation EP which also has another couple of great electro-swing tracks on it including one called Snake Charmer.

  2. DJ Disse & Betina Bager Sample Fred Astaire With Cheek To Cheek

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

The electro-swing movement is alive and kicking in Europe but when is it going to really catch on here in the states? It’s a truly fun movement with loads of great releases! My first experience was buying the excellent G-Swing release back in 2006 when I visited Paris for the first time and it seems since then it’s gotten bigger and bigger with countless releases. For instance there’s been 3 Electro Swing releases and it’s not only the Electro Swing compilations. Here’s the list of Compilations available in this specific style/genre:

    Electro Swing – The Club
    Electro Swing 2
    Electro Swing 3
White Mink (Electro Swing Versus Speakeasy Jazz)
    Electronic Swing Affair
    Art Of Electro Swing
    The Electro Swing Revolution

And this is just a list of the compilations. There’s a whole list of artists that are releasing this style of music and have been for quite sometime now and it’s not only Parov Stelar that’s embraced this subgenre. There’s:
    Caravan Palace - Caravan Palace
Parov Stelar (multiple album releases) but start out with The Paris Swing Box EP!
Lyre Le Temps – Lady Swing
    Kormac – Word Play
Club De Belugas (mulitple album releases) but start out with SWOP!

    And many, many more!!

Well this remake of Fred Astaire’s Cheek To Cheek is one of those excellent remakes which basically samples Fred Astaire into a more upbeat electro-swing version of the original Cheek To Cheek by Fred Astaire. DJ Disse and Betina Bager do a very nice job here adding a quirkyness to it as it’s very bouncy and cartoony at times. You also here the tapping that’s a trademark of the era of this music and Fred Astaire himself. I discovered this version off of Electro Swing 3 but it’s also available as a single the Cheek To Cheek EP. Now we hope we can get more Fred Astaire Remixes album?? This isn’t the first Fred Astaire electro-swing remake either. Club Des Belugas SWOP includes a Puttin’ On The Ritz electro-swing version that’s also worth noting.

Anyone into remixes or jazz remixes especially will truly love this style of music. So enjoy both original version by Fred Astaire and the sampled remake of Cheek To Cheek by DJ Disse & Betina Bager below. If you like to hear more Electro Swing check out these posts on DestroyRockAndRoll.com.

  3. The Bucketheads Sample Movin’ by Brass Construction With Got Myself Together

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Taking disco and sampling it into house music in the 90s was a regular thing. It happened over and over again and I’m so happy that that era happened because two of my favorite styles of music had blended together to become an awesome style – disco house! Disco and House rule! Anyway this is a great example of that style. Take a Chicago house master like Kenny Dope and add a famous disco song from the 70s by Brass Construction, shake it up and end up with a classic 90s club hit by The Bucketheads!

Got Myself Together was the second hit off of The Bucketheads one and only awesome album All In The Mind didn’t become as big a hit as The Bomb was but it’s just as good if not better than The Bomb. I’m sure everyone remember The Bomb with the classic line “These Sounds Fall Into My Mind”? Then you will for sure remember The Bucketheads. The album All In The Mind even contained a 15 minute version of The Bomb for non stop beats. It’s a classic track now 15 years strong! Phew those were good times in the 90s! Weren’t they? All In The Mind is chock full of tracks utilizing samples from bands such as Chicago, Level 42, Atmosfear and Linda Clifford. Boy if you love music that is made up of samples then this album needs to be in your collection!

It was also so unique to discover a Latin/jazz version of Movin’ called Movin’ On by Ray Camacho of the Ray Camacho Band. All I have to say is that the 70s rules when it comes to music! Loads of cool hip styles were running all over. Kind of like the 90s and what’s starting to happen now again! Yay! Keep em comin’!

  4. Stylophonic Samples Della Reese With If Everybody In The World Loved Everybody In The World!

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Hey this is one of my favorite tracks from the 2000′s! It’s actually a midtempo, laidback vocal sampled electronic track from Stylophonic out of Italy. Not heard of it? Well this track If Everybody In The World Loved Everybody In The World samples the amazing Della Reese from her song Everybody In The World. The original is pretty darn cool, a political song that deserves to be listened to if you haven’t already and are into anything 60s, jazz, soul or R&B. Della’s version came out in 1969 from the album Black Is Beautiful a pretty darn amazing album. The Stylophonic sampled version out in 2002, almost 10 years now but still sounds fresh. It’s from the very underrated electronic album Man Music Technology. If you haven’t heard of this album it’s certainly worth it as there are some truly original cuts on here that deserve to be played. Key cuts from Man Music Technology are Soulreply, All Nite Long, Way Of Life (Featuring  Shock G & Humpty Hump) and Bizarre Mind.

  5. London In The Rain by Variety Lab Samples Blossom Dearie

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Boy this was a great find. It’s been a while since I first heard it. Going on 10 years now I first heard it on a Hotel Costes Quatre CD and immediately I wanted to know where that sample came from. To my surprise it’s from this beautiful Blossom Dearie recoring called I Like London In The Rain. The marriage of downtempo/chillout electronic music and old jazz recordings is one of my favorite subgenres of music and I enjoy it very much. This track by Variety Lab is one of the finest examples of taking an old jazz song and sampling it and making a totally unique track. If I had to put a top then list of jazz samples London In The Rain by Variety Lab would be in that list and way up top.

The original I Like London In The Rain song is off of Blossom Dearie’s album That’s Just The Way I Want To Be and London In The Rain is off of the Variety Lab CD Providence.

    Both albums highly recommended!

  7. Air Mail Special (Club Des Belugas Remix) by Ella Fitzgerald

I love me some good old Ella Fitzgerald songs remixed! There have been countless remixes done of her songs in the past and I’m always interested in hearing more remixes. In compilations like the 4 volume Verve Remixed collection you’ll certainly discover some awesome Ella Fitzgeralad remixes. This is Air Mail Special a lesser known track from Ella’s back catalog. It’s part of the track list from Club Des Belugas album Zoo Zizaro. It’s not a remake or cover but a great remix. Club Des Belugas have taken the original Ella Fitzgerald version of Air Mail Special and have updated it made the song a lot livelier.

I highly recommend anyone into Nu Jazz, lounge and cocktail music to check out Club Des Belugas.

  8. I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm (Stuhr Remix) by Kay Star

Kay Starr’s version of I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm is my favorite of that song. When I heard of the remix I even loved it more. It’s been given the upbeat treatment and it’s quite fun. The original is more mellow and slightly sexy with Kay’s beautiful vocals. The remixer on this track is STUHR who I know very little about but damn he did a great job at remixing this track and bringing it to the sound of now. Well the remix is about 5 years old now but still it sounds fresh and it’s one of my all time favorite Christmas songs remixed. From the album Christmas Remixed from Six Degrees Records. Volume 2 available as well and both albums are highly recommended if you are tired of the traditional Christmas music and want something a little more unique to impress your friends and family during the holidays.

  11. Tim Tim Sample Andrews Sisters With Rum ‘N’ Coca Cola

Being the big fan of electro swing I quickly fell in love with this version of Rum And Coca-Cola originally recorded by The Andrews Sisters. This version by Tim Tim gives the song the island, Jamaican reggaefied party vibe feel along with the ragga rapping and cute girl vocals and incorporated with the awesome sample from the original Andrews Sisters song. Very bouncy and will get your party shaking. I highly recommend this version as I love it and I’m sure you will too.

I Thought It Was You still sounds fresh like it did back in 1997 and it’s one of my favorite recordings of all time if we’re speaking of house music. It’s up there. The guys from Full Intention have taken on the alias of Sex-O-Sonique and have sampled a perfect track for this release. It is damn quite amazing. It was released by the late great FFRR label that was owned by Pete Tong. Well at least I think it’s late and great as I have not seen any releases from them as of late. Either way enjoy this track as it’s one of my faves and hear the origins of where the track comes from by Herbie Hancock.

  13. Italian Secret Service Cover Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit

I think every song should be remixed, remade, sampled even such a classic song like Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. I love the idea of taking a song that’s recognized in a genre and switching it on everyone and rerecording it in a complete different style. And here it’s done quite well by Italian Secret Service from Irma Records out of Italy. This remake takes me back to the early 60s, innocent jazzy easy listening music. It’s fun and this really works just grab yourself a mai tai and enjoy.

  14. Pennies From Heaven (Count De Money Remix) by Billie Holiday

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Billie Holiday’s version of Pennies From Heaven is my favorite compared to everyone else that’s done it. It’s so beautiful, calm mellow somewhat moody but very beautiful. When I heard of this remix from the Remixed and Reimagined CD I was quick to snatch it right up! I love remixes (if you haven’t noticed already) and will buy any remix of an existing song including the oldies. I was quite surprised at how good the Count De Money Remix is of Pennies From Heaven. I just wished it was longer. It almost feels or sounds like it starts in the middle. Those record execs and their stupid decisions to do such a thing. Give me the 12″ and day, longer versions pleeze! Either way though I shouldn’t complain because I can have my Billie Holiday songs remixed. The entire collection of Remixed and Reimagined is great. Worth it for anyone that likes remixes or is a Billie Holiday fan but not a purist. Came out in 2007.

All the colors are changing … Autumn is here! That’s taken from this awesome track by Koop, the electro jazz duo from Sweden. The original Relaxin’ At Club Fusion is nice downtempo moody jazz electronic perfection but this Dorfmeister Vs. Madrid De Los Austrias remix is pretty darn cool. They’ve sped things way up here and changed the name to Relaxin’ At Club F*****n. Not sure why but oh well the music is pretty darn cool! I love Ocean Beach by Black Might Orchestra. It’s a cover of the late great Henry Mancini’s Lujon track. Lujon is actually one of my favorite tracks from Henry Mancini … it’s a beautiful and sexy downtempo jazzy cinematic masterpiece and Black Mighty Orchestra have taken parts from Lujon and sampled it to an electronic chillout hit. You’ve probably heard Ocean Beach on countless chillout compilations and it’s still great to have as background music for a dinner party or to relax to at home.

Check out both versions below and write a comment about it!

You can find these songs and a bunch of other great tracks off of both albums pictured above.

Here’s a pretty darn good sample of the Hall & Oates track I Can’t Go For That in Simply Red’s track Sunrise. The song itself is really good and the sample of the Hall & Oates track I Can’t Go For That just works perfectly. Some of the lyrics to Sunrise changes over to the Hal & Oates song in Sunrise and comes back to the Sunrise lyrics. So it’s well done. This track Sunrise is off of the Simply Red album Home. A perfect blend of vocal R&B, pop and jazziness. The singles from the release including Sunrise and also Home and Fake all have remixes available. All are available for download from your favorite download store like Amazon, Emusic and iTunes!

For now check out both Sunrise and I Can’t Go For That below and feel free to comment. Before you do that check out the video for Sunrise here …

    Huff-And-Herb-Feeling-Good-SingleBuddha-Bar-1-CD-Cover

I had not heard of this track Feeling Good (Epic Mix) by Huff & Herb back when it came out in 1997. It’s basically a sample of Feeling Good by Nina Simone. This of course the Epic Mix is remixed by the genius Rollo of Faithless fame and the brother of Dido! Anyway I first heard it several years later when Buddha Bar 1 came out. It’s a pretty darn good mix and of course a remix by Rollo with his signature sound. And I love how Nina Simone’s voice is perfect against the electronic dance beats! Pretty risque pic of Nina below … didn’t know she did that type of stuff! In the nude!!!!!!!!

Check it out below and compare the original with a very minimal background well at least the first part of the song is pretty minimal and the Huff & Herb version with the Rollo Epic Mix. The video is below too. Not anything special and it’s pretty dated but worth a look! Also check out the black and white vintage animation with the song Feeling Good at Dailymotion.
