  1. Matt Helders Ft. Nesreen Shah Cover Dreamer by Livin’ Joy

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This song was such a big deal for me back in the mid 90s that I overplayed it. It was a big pop dance crossover hit from Italy. Later I also discovered a Rollo remix and started playing that version as well. So it has a special place for me as it was def one of the bigger dance pop tunes that came out in the 90s. I was quick to want to check out when I heard about a remake of it. Sure to my surprise it’s a pretty darn cool version by Matt Helders featuring Nesreen Shah. Matt Helders is the drummer from the Arctic Monkeys and I have not idea who Nesreen Shah is but they have certainly updated a club classic 90s dance pop song and made it quite the energetic drummified bouncy update. I like it. What do you think? The track is from Ministry Of Sounds Uncovered CD which is a real cool collection of covers remakes etc. Well worth it to own!

If there’s any track that takes me back to the heyday of the rave techno scene this has got to be it. This piece of music is darn amazing! Totally energetic and has that updated sound from the scene in the early 90s. I have several other tracks from Surkin but I’m still really into this one track. Surkin is Benoit Heitz. Born in the South Of France now residing in Paris. This is off of Surkin’s Next Of Kin EP.

  3. Hypocrisy (John Digweed & Nick Muir Remix) by Abe Duque

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is a case where I love the original just as much as the remix that John Digweed & Nick Muir have concocted. The original is deep dark and very tribal sounding. The remix takes me back to Global Underground mix CD series territory when big mega clubs were huge and folks would go to dance all night long. I’m loving both versions and I think it’s worth knowing more about this guy Abe Duque. The original is taken from the Don’t Be So Mean album from last year.

Techno classic masterpiece from the late 80s gets a jazzed up house groove. I’m there. This is a pretty darn great reinterpretation of one of the early techno classics by Rhythim is Rhythim, Derrick May’s band. Where as the original is somewhat slow this version by The 10th Planet is groovin’ fast. The 10th Planet are Derrick May and Michael James and this is the remix/remake of Strings Of Life as remixed by Octave One. Lovin’ it. Check them both out below you’ll know what I’m talking about. Canadian 80s Hi NRG singer gets the sample treatment by LRM & Libex with Liftered. This is awesome and brings back the energy of the early 80s high energy music. Just when folks thought that disco was dead this Miquel Brown song So Many Men, So Little Time kickstarted the Hi NRG movement. LRM & Libex lift the bassline from So Many Men, So Little Time and make it a current sounding club banger. Worth every penny! Check them both out below.

Satisfaction is only 7 years old and we now see a new remix package for it. Unfortunately though I’m not that impressed and the original (Isaak Original) is still the best version of this quirky electro track. There are three remixes and I included the Sub Assasins 2010 remix below along with the original.

  11. Shiny Toy Guns Cover Peter Schilling With Major Tom (Coming Home)

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Here’s a pretty darn cool remake of one of my favorite songs from the late 80s! I used to hear this on Live 105 all the time when it became a hit and was a fan of Peter Schilling’s album A Different Story so I was happy to have heard that there was a darn cool remake for this song. Cool of a remake to make it into a Lincoln commercial. Well Lincoln I don’t really care about but the Shiny Toy Guns version is certainly bringing back memories of the late 80s. What do you think of the two versions?

Prior to this song I hadn’t heard of Shiny Toy Guns much in fact not at all but because of this I had to go download their album Girls Le Disko. It’s certainly worth owning! Good enough is a live German version of the Peter Schilling song below.

  13. Children (Tilt’s Courtyard Mix) by Tilt Covers Robert Miles

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Ok I have to admit I was a fan of Children by Robert Miles when it first came out but it soon became overplayed and too pop cheesy. So I forgot about it real quick. 3 years later I noticed Tilt remaking the Robert Miles dream trance hit so I was curious to check it out. To my surprise it was pretty darn cool an awesome progressive trance release from one of my fave trance acts in the late 90s. Tilt was praised by many of the top DJs from the UK including Paul Oakenfold, Sasha and John Digweed.

In addition to Children, Tilt had several other trance releases including I Dream, Invisible, Butterfly, Rendevouz and What’s This. All some of my fave trance cuts back in the day and definitely worth checking out.

I still think this version of Children is the superior one over both. I especially love the cheesy Jason Voorhees/Friday The 13th sound effects added in this track. Ok it’s certainly cheesy but in a cool kind of way. Check out both below. The original Rober Miles version which became a worldwide hit and the the trance cover by Tilt in 1999. What do you think?

I love The Girl and The Robot by Royksopp in it’s original form not remixed and I love the fact that Royksopp used Robyn on vocals I think the combo was perfect. The song has a huge remix package but gosh I hate to say and I will say all of the remixes SUCK! Except this a classical orchestral interpretation of the original The Girl And The Robot. I can’t figure out why I don’t like any of the remixes but I know I love the original and it’s so good maybe the remixes just don’t come close to the original or perfect on the original. Oh well, not all remixes are good. This interpretation I do like because it’s so out there from the original. Check it out and let me know what you think.

    Destroy-Rock-And-Roll-Remix-Blog-Taana-Gardner-West-End-Records2

I love Heartbeat in it’s original form by Taana Gardner but this remix from 2001 is pretty darn cool. It’s much more sped up so it’s not as mellow as the original is so it’s more geared for the club floor. Heartbeat was originally released in 1981 off of West End Records and it’s still pretty darn cool. It’s so laidback and chill but very early 1980s disco. Worth it if you disco lovers have never heard of. Heartbeat and Work That Body are the only hits Taana Gardner is known so she had a small career in disco music. Taana Gardner has worked with some very legendary folks from that era including Larry Levan and Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band.

This remix of Heartbeat is part of a disc called Dance For Life West End Records Celebrates the 10th Anniversary of LIFEbeat. It’s def worth owning as there are new remixes of old West End Records classics including an Angel Moraes remix of Work That Body by Taana Gardner. Check it out!

Disco will never go out of style! It’s here to stay forever and ever. That’s why musicians keep sampling famous tracks over and over again from the disco era! So Richard Dorfmeister (aka Kruder & Dorfmeister) and Madrid De Los Austrias have done an excellent sampling job on their track Boogie No More sampling the classic disco song Boogie Oogie Oogie by A Taste Of Honey. It’s perfect here and the Reverso 68 Remix is just awesome! The single also includes a Kraak & Smaak remix which is also pretty darn good. The Kraak & Smaak remix is a little more on the big beat side which makes both remixes completely different.

Check them both out below and while you are at it enjoy this live performance of A Taste Of Honey on youtube.

This is off of two remix digital singles and both sets are worth owning for those of you that like remixes. Remixers include De-Phazz, Timewriter and of course Dublex Inc. I love it when DJ’s or artists remix very well known tracks but legends. This remix was done by Paul Oakenfold of the classic Doors track L.A. Woman I dig it very much. It’s now around 5 or 6 years old but hey L.A. Woman never gets tired and this remix is just the same. It’s not your typical dance remix here Paul Oakenfold keeps the same elements of the original Doors song but the remix has an added oomph factor to it. Check them both out below. Gosh Paul Oakenfold got his start in the late 80s/early 90s and I’ve been following his music since then and he’s certainly come along way and this remix is just an example of his great remixing talents. ABC by The Jackson 5 is a pretty fun song and this is a very fun remix of ABC by The Jackson 5 in the style of Fatboy Slim and even Pizzicato 5. This one is remixed by Konishi Yasuharu and it’s lively, energetic and groovy and I think it’s suits the song very well because it has a very 70s remix style to it. This remix is from the Soul Source – The Jackson 5 Remixes 2 CD that came out back in 2000 or 2001. 2 CD’s of Jackson Five remixes! Rare discs that you might find somewhere used or new maybe and well worth owning if you can find them and you are into remixes. The CD is a Japanese Import so might still be available some places I would snatch it up if you find it.

Pretty cool sampling job by Blue Boy for the track Remember Me. Blue Boy is Scottish DJ, Alexis ‘Lex’ Blackmore and this is his one and only hit. This one dates back to 1997 so it’s 12 years old now but the sample is a live version of Marlena Shaw’s Woman Of The Ghetto. The live album it comes from is Live In MontreauxThis live version of Woman Of The Ghetto was pretty popular for sampling back in the late 90s and early 2000s. It was also sampled by St. Germain for this Rose Rouge track off of Tourist. Very cool stuff. Check out both Blue Boy and original live version of Women Of The Ghetto below. The samples is basically Marlena Shaw singing … “Remember me … I’m the one who had your babies”. It’s perfect. The song reached pretty high in the charts in the UK but here in the states it was pretty underground.

Here’s a synthy trademark Chromeo sounding mellow cover of the Eagles 70s soft rock/easy listening track I Can’t Tell You Why. Listening to the original gives me goosebumps as I have a love/hate relationship with this track. A good and bad time in my life. But the remake by Chromeo is quite fun and slightly quirky as they are known for producing. Check them out below. This cover is released as part of the DJ Kicks mix CD. It’s perfectly placed in the mix. The disc also contains some flashback 80s tracks by France Joli, Kano, Donna Allen and Leo Sayer. A great mix for anyone into synth dance pop with an 80s sound. Check out the fun promo film as well. It’s shot in the streets of Paris. You know what now that I think about this Chromeo cover at first listen it sounds like an 80s Hall & Oates track. Hmm?
