  1. Xlover Covers Prince With Darling Nikki!

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

A sexy sleazed up electro synth version of Prince’s sexy, orgasmic ballad from Purple Rain? Yes that’s what Xlover have done to remake this classic Prince song from the cool soundtrack to the film Purple Rain. Ok the singing is a bit off but hey it’s a fun project off of the oh so cool International Deejay Gigolo Records from Berlin, DJ Hell’s label with the Amanda Lepore logo. Ok that’s a bit of old news but I’ve been a big fan of International Deejay Gigolo Records. Just recently they released CD Twelve from the long running series of cool electro, dance, punk, new wave, synth based tracks from the label. This collection of songs certainly recommended if you are into this type of music as it contains cool remixes of songs including A Fifth Of Beethoven (Soulwax Remix) by Walter Murphy. Yes the classic disco track from Saturday Night Fever and other remixes like Peaches Lose You remixed by DJ Hell.

Anyway back to Xlover and Darling Nikki … Darling Nikki is off of the Xlover album Pleasure & Romance and the album is chock full of sleazy, sexy dark electro vox cuts. Check out more Xlover cuts here.

  2. Top Ten Best Dance Remixes Of 2010!!!

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Love me some good old remixes so I figured I’d gather ten of my favorite remixes from 2010 and post them here for everyone else to enjoy like I have been. I have to say I think one of the best remixes from last year is the Armand Van Helden Remix for Add SUV the Uffie song. The original is a bit of a mess and not typically what I enjoy but the remix rocks!

If you haven’t heard these remixes then you’ve been sleeping under a rock in 2010 and now it’s time for you to find out and enjoy these just as much as I am. Robyn’s song Dancing On My Own remixed by Fred Falke is pop/dance bliss. Then there’s Jody Wisternoff aka Way Out West song Don’t Crash Please remixed by Stereofunk. That thing is so sexy, groovy, club house stomper. Love it! Click through each link and it will take you to each post and you can download the remixes there.

    Enjoy!

  3. Second Lives (Lifelike Remix) by Vitalic

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Lifelike have take the techno electro track Second Lives by Vitalic from his Flashmob album and have given it the more happy disco vibe. Still has the electro edge to it but it’s a little more groovy as disco/electro music should be. This remix by Lifelike also has a very late 70s early 80s dance sound as well. You know when disco was becoming hi nrg, italo and all. I love this remix and I think it’s my favorite from the remix package for Second Lives by Vitalic. Other remixes included in the package are The Bloody Beetroots Remix and Mustang Remix. If you are a fan of Vitalic or techno electro or any remixes then this is your single! 4. Me & Madonna (The Twelves Remix) by Black Strobe

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

At the turn of the century you can certainly feel that dance music was going into a different direction. Trance was on it’s way out and every single sub genre of dance music had come and gone and finally electro was popping up everywhere. Bands like Fischerspooner, Miss Kittin and The Hacker and Ladytron had started a new sound called electroclash. Well that lasted right? Not but the electro sound is still pretty big. This song Me & Madonna by Black Strobe was one of those dark, sleazy vocal electro cuts that still sounds quite fresh today. It could have fit perfectly on any of the International Deejay Gigolos compilations in fact I believe it was on one of the volumes. The original 2002 version has a very 80s feel to it, with New Order guitars and all. Black Strobe have moved over to Kitsune label and I think that makes perfect sense. Don’t you?

This 2010 remix by The Twelves from the Me & Madonna remixes package has been given the grooved up treatment that I’m digging quite a lot. It’s jumpy, fun and upbeat and most fun. Not sleazy, dark and mellow like the original but certainly upbeat and danceable. It’s a good remix by The Twelves. Cool thing to note about Black Strobe is that they did a really awesome remix of Something To Do for Depeche Mode about 5 years ago that I highly recommend if you haven’t heard it yet to seriously check it out here.

  5. Blitz (Villa Remix) by Digitalism

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Hey it’s the long awaited follow up single to Digitalism’s massive album Idealism. The German duo are really back with more of their trademark big beat electro sound that countless producers copied. I like this new cut but I really am enjoying the Villa Remix much better. I know the Digitalism sound it’s good and great for clubs but Villa have remixed this cut pretty darn cool and have given a very robotic and computerized feel to it. Very futuristic sounding and I can certainly see this in a Tron type film trailer. Ok long as it doesn’t suck like Tron did! This release off of Kitsune from France. Where’s EMI? The single also contains Stratosphere which I’m totally digging! Preview Stratosphere here for free!

  6. Alagoas Cowboys (Martin Brodin Remix) by Rodion

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is a pretty quirky electro disco track from Rodion by way of Gomma records in Germany. Alagoas Cowboys is from the Rodion For Ever Single and For Ever Remixes Single and the remix is certainly the more fun version. The original version of Alagoas Cowboys is more stripped down version which still is pretty fun but I first discovered this cut by listening to the Martin Brodin Remix. I love the whistling in the cut basically it’s mostly cool midtempo electronic disco beats with cute whistling nothing else. No vocals but all fun!

I highly recommend Gomma Records and their releases. Everything by Munk is top notch and one of my favorite acts to follow for new releases.

  7. Hablando (Dub Mix) by Vandalism & Sampled by In-Grid

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I first heard of Hablando by Ramirez on Journey’s By DJ Paul Oakenfold CD way back in 1994. It’s that building dreamy progressive trance that once you hear you’ll get caught up in it’s magic euphoric sounds and not want to stop listening to it. The Paul Oakenfold mix was pretty darn good and I’d listen to the whole thing and start over again. So I loved this mix and I loved Hablando by Ramirez.

So then we have a remake here by Vandalism. It’s quite similar but lot more clubby. Gone are the dreamy quality of the original but made quite more upbeat and more electro. Vandalism have just adapted the classic trance track to todays ears. It works for clubs and driving in cars. It’s an all classic trance cut waiting to be made and finally it’s been brought back to life.

    Le Dragueur by In-Grid

Funny thing was I recently downloaded the new album by In-Grid. Ok I do like my pop dance music and noticed that Le Dragueur by In-Grid has a sample of the classic Ramirez track Hablando. This I absolutely love as they’ve taken a portion of the most famous part from Hablando and incorporated it into it’s own original song. Le Dragueur off of the album Passion by In-Grid. Enjoy all three!

  8. Walking On A Dream (Treasure Fingers Remix) by Empire Of The Sun

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I have to say Empire Of The Sun’s album Walking On A Dream has been one of my favorite albums of the last couple of years. Their songs are very similar to songs I listened to in my teens in the 80s. The entire album is full of really cool crossover pop/dance/synth songs I listen to over and over.

I was happy to discover a really cool remix of Walking On A Dream too. This Treasure Fingers Remix is right on with quality. I sometimes love some songs too much in their original form that for some odd reason the remix just doesn’t work but it does here. This doesn’t happen too often as I love remixes but sometimes a song is perfect in it’s original form and a remix just doesn’t do justice.

This remix package comes with a couple of other remixes as well including A Neon Neon remix of Walking On A Dream and a Losers Remix of Standing On The Shore. Well worth owning. And if you haven’t even heard of the full length album Walking On A Dream by Empire Of The Sun then you must not be alive so check it out too as it’s got a bunch of cool 80s influenced synth pop!

Love hearing remakes of this pop/hi-nrg track from Olivia Newton John. Always willing to listen to more remakes of this song. 10. Altes Kamuffel (Berlin Calling Edit) by Paul Kalkbrenner

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is the track that I skip ahead to over and over again listening to the Berlin Calling Soundtrack. It’s big, fast, somewhat dreamy and very euphoric. I absolutely love it. The Berlin Calling Soundtrack is quite good but I keep coming back to this. I always visualize a dark club, lights blaring in and out and this track blasting out of the speakers. Kind of like the scene in the film Babel. The Japanese scenes in the club. Highly recommend this track and the rest of the Berlin Calling Soundtrack.

I’ve been digging the Grum sound lately. I loved this great remix Grum did for Groove Armada’s History cut and immediately had to check out what else Grum had done. The album Heartbeats by Grum is well worth owning for all the cool electro disco house cuts very reminiscent to the 80s pop dance sound.

A David Bowie cover is always fun to check out and this version by Grum does not disappoint. It’s fun electro pop with male fronted vocals and added robotic vocoder effects for a good fun time. Enjoy both below.

  13. Metal Disco (Legowelt VS. Orgue Electronique Remix) by Hong Kong Counterfeit

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This awesome remix of Metal Disco dates back to 2000 originally. Then a couple of years later I kept hearing it all over the place on compilations and mixes etc. It’s got that very sexy, sleazy dark electro tinged dance music that’s huge in underground clubs in Germany in cities like Berlin and Munich! It still sounds very fresh and doesn’t feel a bit dated. Hong Kong Counterfeit were associated with DJ Hell’s label International Deejay Gigolo’s and this release is off of the Munich label Erkrankung Durch Musique. This remix by Legowelt Orgue Electronique of Metal Disco has been given the increased BPM treatment and the two versions original and remix version of Metal Disco sound completely different. Both are too cool. Enjoy!

  14. Move (Original) by Tim Healey & Marc Adamo

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

The huge rave monster by The Shamen, Move Any Mountain has been remade by Tim Healey & Marc Adamo. Getting it ready for the 20th anniversary of The Shamen release. Originally it was called Progen but later when they got signed to Sony Records they renamed the song and repackaged the single with countless remixes and an awesome first album En-Tact which was also remixed for the USA.

Here Tim Healey & Marc Adamo have taken that huge rave dance hit and made an update to it for today. This version is the original and it’s the one that has the most vocals and the one that makes it really feel like an actual cover. Whatever you want to call it a cover, sample, remake they are all possibilities and this is a nice update. I just love hearing new versions of old classics and this one really takes me back to when rave culture had exploded and dance and techno music was all over the place including being played on Live 105 here in SF! Those were the good old days! There are two other remixes with this release and the remix to note is the Dirtycloud Remix. Click the album cover below to hear the remixes from this release which I highly recommend.

  15. Over The Hill by Tim Taylor VS Thor 54 Samples Hills Of Katmandu by Tantra

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Such an epic disco classic track Tantra’s Hills of Katmandu is and Tim Taylor VS Thor 54 have actually perfected on that classic track. Both versions are quite amazing and Hills Of Katmandu is one of my all time favorite disco tracks. It still sounds quite fresh and way ahead of it’s time when this was first released back in 1979 30+ years ago. Ok it’s not your typical disco track that you would find on an American disco compilation but it’s so worth hearing, owning, loving and appreciating. It’s classic underground, it’s very underground dance club, Studio 54 and so on. Those of you disco lovers will appreciate the original here. It’s a fine example of Euro Electro Disco bordering on Hi-NRG and Italo Disco that would later come into the mainstream. The original, original version of Hills of Katmandu is over 16 minutes long. The version I have here is a mix by legendary San Francisco DJ/musician Patrick Cowley which makes it a little shorter but adding a little more deeper bassline.

You will also appreciate the remake by Tim Taylor VS Thor 54. It’s tribal techno electro house at it’s best. Released back in 2001 almost 10 years now but still sounding fresh, It’s certainly a great update. They have sampled Hills Of Katmandu perfectly. Check them both out below.

  17. Moonbootica Cover House Of Pain’s Jump Around!

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is a pretty awesome electrofied remake of the House Of Pain hip hop classic from the early 90s! Dark, sleazy electro beats with robotic vox. It’s quite nice and I love it when they take such a classic track from a genre and remake the hell out of it which is what Moonbootica have done here. Good for them! I first heard of Moonbootica with a remix of Tessio the Luomo track from 2001 or so. Later they exploded with a remix of Mundian To Bach Ke the Punjabi MC bhangra hit. So they’ve been remixing for a while now and this track is certainly a solid remake. This remake goes back to 2007 so it’s already a bit old but still fresh sounding. As we approach the 20th anniversary of the House of Pain classic Jump Around this will make do for us as it’s certainly the future in sound.

If you like their sound you should also check out their release Men Of The Future. It’s quite a nice electro/disco cut and certainly worth hearing it on repeat. It’s quite the sexy, late night groove.

When Weapon Of Choice came out back in 2001 it was a pretty big hit. The track was a quirky retro sounding fun electronic masterpiece. I really dug it and the video was fun too and starred Christopher Walken of all things. So it was a classic piece of work. I’m really partial to the original version of Weapon Of Choice but this new remix by Lazy Rich is pretty fun. It’s got more of a club/electro sound. Stuff that’s really big nowadays. It still has elements of the original track but definitely is an update. Works for me in some ways but again I love the original just a bit more and as always the original video is so much fun. I like Peaches but something about her turns me off a bit. Her music is hit and miss at times. I really like some of it and the rest is just ok to me.  But I really do love this song and remix of Lose You that DJ Hell did for Peaches though. The remix was released late last year but I only just heard it from the awesome International DJ Gigolos CD 12 that came out a couple of months back. I’ve never been much of a fan of Luther Vandross but when I heard this remix to Never Too Much with the bouncy disco style I quickly fell in love with it. I remember the original when it came out in the very early 80s it was one of those songs similar to other that were released from that same era. The same song was remixed and rereleased in 1989 but never reached any charts here in the states. Now that we have this awesome remix by ODahl I have rediscovered how good this song is. The original and the very spacey dancey robo-quirky remix by Odahl. Highly recommended. Released in 2009 20 years after the first remix in 1989. Enjoy.

This remix though is quite the hottest thing I’ve heard for a long ass time when it comes to remixes. It’s got loads of energy and I love Pharrell’s vocals on here in combination with Uffie’s. Hooj Choons was one of my favorite labels coming out of the UK in the early 90s. With hit after hit of dancefloor cuts I was hooked with their Nu NRG sound that they had penned. Some of the acts on the label that I liked were JX, Tin Tin Out, Sister Bliss, Hyper Go Go, Escrima, Hyperlogic and many more.

This track Hypnotized (Bottin’s Mercurial Mix) by Oscar G & Stryke comes off the Some Of These Were Hooj Volume 4 and it’s the standout cut from a very cool, cool compilation. The compilation includes many acts you’ll probably remember if you were tuned into the dance scene that came out of the UK in 90s.
