  1. The Gift (Gui Boratto’s Fallopian Mix) by Way Out West

The Gift is a classic dance track dating back to 1996 by Way Out West. I remember RCA Records (the US label) had released the CD single to the track of which I had bought having read about it prior. I loved the track a whole lot. It was bouncy, energetic and sort of bordering on progressive drum & bass. It was fun. I’m glad Gui Boratto has given it the 2010 remix treatment to this almost 15 year old track. Those of you that don’t know about this Way Out West track then you certainly have to check it out. It’s certainly a defining moment of 90s electronica/dance.

The Blue album which is also the self titled Way Out West album is classic. There are several excellent cuts on there that are certainly worth owning. Blue, Ajare and of course The Gift. Highly recommended!

  2. Hide U by Suzanne Palmer and Kosheen

When this song came out there was so much controversy surrounding it. It was recorded by Kosheen which I think is the better of the two versions but Suzanne Palmer from the Star *69 Records gang had the better remixes more housey and club friendly as Star *69 Records have known to be. But why release it at the same time? I don’t think it hurt either artist but was a stupid thing to do as it confused people!

I heard the Kosheen version first and it left an impression on me and their first album Resist is quite amazing! In my book the Kosheen version is still better – dark and moody with great drum & bass background and my favorite out of the two. What do you think? Which is the better for you? Check out the video of the Kosheen version below as well.

  3. Fools Gold (Grooverider’s Mix) by The Stone Roses

Here’s a great remix from almost 10 years ago (boy time flies!) by way of Grooverider – the jazzy drum and bass maestro known for his release Mysteries Of Funk from 1998. He’s taken the classic indie, Manchester or shall we say Madchester sound song Fools Gold from 1989 and made it a faster, club friendlier track. Fools Gold in it’s original form is already an indie dance classic along with tracks like Loaded and Come Together by Primal Scream and Step On and Bob’s Yer Uncle by Happy Mondays.

Fools Gold was the stand out upbeat track from the The Stone Roses – they are known for I Want To Be Adored but Fools Gold was the big, extra long dance cut off of the mostly indie, modern rock acts releases from the late 80s.

This remix is proof that remixing music is an art form and Grooverider has taken a classic modern rock track and elevated it to a brand new electronic, drum and bass level.

This remix is from the great series of mostly hip hop tracks called Old School Vs. New School which also included remixes of tracks by such artists as A Tribe Called Quest, Whodini and DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
Check them out and let me know what you think. Feel free to comment.
