I love Heartbeat in it’s original form by Taana Gardner but this remix from 2001 is pretty darn cool. It’s much more sped up so it’s not as mellow as the original is so it’s more geared for the club floor. Heartbeat was originally released in 1981 off of West End Records and it’s still pretty darn cool. It’s so laidback and chill but very early 1980s disco. Worth it if you disco lovers have never heard of. Heartbeat and Work That Body are the only hits Taana Gardner is known so she had a small career in disco music. Taana Gardner has worked with some very legendary folks from that era including Larry Levan and Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band.

This remix of Heartbeat is part of a disc called Dance For Life West End Records Celebrates the 10th Anniversary of LIFEbeat. It’s def worth owning as there are new remixes of old West End Records classics including an Angel Moraes remix of Work That Body by Taana Gardner. Check it out!

Once again a cool band like The Glimmers have to change their name because of some old fogies like Mick Jagger and Keith Richards used to use The Glimmer Twins. Whatever!!! I like the Glimmers much better anyway. And this track Galactic Prism is rocking! Love, absolutely love this track since it has a very 80s feel to it but it’s totally now. It’s from The Glimmers album The Glimmers Are Gee Gee Fazzi which is aslo awesome and this track is one of the standout cuts but there’s more more groovy goodies on there! With elements of disco, electro, punk, Latin and their quirky style of production this makes for an awesome release. Enjoy and support The Glimmers and buy their album The Glimmers Are Gee Gee Fazzi! You wont be disappointed!

Disco will never go out of style! It’s here to stay forever and ever. That’s why musicians keep sampling famous tracks over and over again from the disco era! So Richard Dorfmeister (aka Kruder & Dorfmeister) and Madrid De Los Austrias have done an excellent sampling job on their track Boogie No More sampling the classic disco song Boogie Oogie Oogie by A Taste Of Honey. It’s perfect here and the Reverso 68 Remix is just awesome! The single also includes a Kraak & Smaak remix which is also pretty darn good. The Kraak & Smaak remix is a little more on the big beat side which makes both remixes completely different.

Check them both out below and while you are at it enjoy this live performance of A Taste Of Honey on youtube.

    Giorgio-Moroder-Midnight-Express

Hey! Giorgio Moroder is one of the masters of electronic music so I’m a very big fan of his stuff including his solo work, his work with Donna Summer and everything else! Chase is one of my all time favorite tracks. It’s the theme track to the film Midnight Express. I always thought that was such an odd combo with Giorgio Moroder doing the soundtrack to Midnight Express but it worked. Well the music really works for me. When I heard this very upbeat version of Chase by DuOud in very Middle Eastern/Arab style I was like this should have been the version in Midnight Express!!

Anyway this version rocks! Check it out as both version are below for you to download and compare. Obviously the Giorgio Moroder version is very 70s disco and the DuOud version is well a remake with the very Middle Eastern instruments including the Oud which the band DuOud takes their name from. Worth the download!

Chase is off of the album Wild Serenade. It’s chock full of Arab and Middle Eastern world beats. If you are a fan of this type of music then it’s definitely an album worth having in your collection.

Louie Vega does a great cover of the disco classic Thousand Finger Man by Candido. Love this very Latin inspired track as was the original by Candido. This track comes right off the Elements Of Life “Extensions’ CD which I highly recommend for a bunch of other awesome tracks by Louie Vega all remixed. Sexy Latin inspired house music. This Thousand Fingered Man and along with the Mon Amour (DJ Gregory Remix)are the winners on the release. Pretty darn cool.

The now classic Les Rhthmes Digitales album Darkdancer contains many samples and covers on several of the tracks. It’s a great album and I still come back to it and listen to several of the cuts on it. One of the better uses of samples music is this track From: Disco To: Disco which contains the sample of the song with  the same name From: Disco To: Disco by Whirlpool Productions.  I don’t know much about Whirlpool Productions but I know the original From: Disco To: Disco was released in 1996.

  8. Lady Marmalade by Lords Of Acid

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Hey who doesn’t love the Labelle disco funk hit Lady Marmalade? It’s a pretty darn big hit from the disco era and it’s still pretty popular today. I love this remake though from Lords Of Acid. They have made it into a sleazy industrial electrofied version. A bit cheesy at some points when the moaning comes in (ok that’s signature Lords Of Acid) but the beats are pretty darn cool still. This remake is 10 years old … wow time flies but I think it’s still got legs. It doesn’t sound too dated.

    What do you think? Lords_Of_Acid_Expand_Your_Head_Cover

  9. Supernature (William Orbit’s Mix) by Erasure

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Erasure released Supernature as a B side to their single Blue Savannah back in 1989 just after their big successful Chains Of Love song came out a couple of years prior. So this was pretty darn big. Lots of great remixes of Blue Savannah and of course this awesome remix of Supernature by William Orbit. The Cerrone disco classic was reinvented in a whole new style. This is a pretty darn great remake and I still listen to. It has slight touches of the disco sound but also has a very synth background – more in line with the 80s synth sound that Vince Clarke was known for.

This version is pretty darn long and again it’s pretty darn good. I love the Cerrone version of Supernature and I really do love this as well. Cerrone and along with Giorgio Moroder are my 2 favorite disco producers and this original is still one of my favorite Euro Disco tracks. Listen below and compare the two versions.

  11. Birth, School, Work, Death by Manhead Featuring Christian Cruz

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Don’t know much about this release of Birth, School, Work, Death by Manhead Featuring Christian Cruz but I sure do know the original by The Godfathers. The one hit wonder modern rockers that I heard countless times on Live 105. It’s a pretty darn good track the original that is but the remake is not as exciting as the original but it really does grow on you. What do you think? It’s a midtempo clubby electro sounding update and yes it truly does grow on you. It’s quite fun!

    Disco_Dimensions_Vol_1

    Manhead_Birth_School_Work_Death

I first heard of this remake on the Disco Demensions, Vol. 1 CD then I was like hey I remember that track by The Godfathers back in 1987/1988. Wait do I have my dates right? Ok just looked it up and their album Birth, School, Work, Death was released in 1988 on Epic Records. The newer remake is available as a (if you can find it) 12″ vinyl single as well.

  12. Watch My Mouth by Cazwell

Hey I love this track Watch My Mouth by Cazwell. They’ve taken Taana Gardner’s Hearbeat and sampled perfectly in this Cazwell track. I think it works quite well. Even though the original Taana Gardner version is very downtempo I like the way in the Cawell track it’s sped up just the right amount. Check the two out see what I mean. Links below.

The Taana Gardner original is now a disco classic that I listen to still. I discovered it late. It’s not hit that it could have been like you know the typical disco hits that everyone listens to by Gloria Gaynor, Chic and Village People. This Taana Garnder Heartbeat track is more underground and was released by the legendary the indie label West End Records. It’s a classic masterpiece!

I love everything Sally Shapiro and this Parker Lewis remix of Love In July is quite nice. It’s from the digital single for Love In July. It’s not some big club remix it’s a very mellow mid to up tempo remix and I truly dig it. Much nicer than the original of course. The original is mostly vox but this has the nice electronic remix sound. Perfect from Parker Lewis. What do you think of the two versions?

  14. I Want Your Love (Danny Krivit Original Re-Edit) by Jody Watley

Gosh? Whatever happened to Jody Watley? Well she’s still around and she’s done this awesome remake of the Chic disco classic. I think this is quite the remake – it’s excellent. It’s so good that it’s been on repeat for a while now. I’ve read that Nile Rodgers is actually done the guitar on this Jody Watley version of the Chich masterpiece from the 70s. The Jody Watley single contains so many remixes but my favorite is the Danny Krivit Original Re-Edit as it’s perfect to chill to it. It’s very similar to the Chic classic – it’s a laidback midtempo track. Here’s a list of the versions available from the Jody Watley release.

    Jody_Watley_I_Want_Your_Love

One listen to both versions and you’ll notice that it’s very similar except for the production sounds more current and the vocals are of course Jody Watley versus the Chic girls. The original comes off of the album C’est Chic.

The original Jody Watley version comes from the album The Makeover.

  15. Ring My Bell (Miss X Remix) by Miss X

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Here’s a very popular 70s disco classic Ring My Bell by Anita Ward that’s been taken and given the upbeat deep bass treatment by Miss X. I don’t know much about this band and I certainly can’t find any info about them online. Their album is available as a download on Amazon, iTunes and eMusic which is where I downloaded.

I specifically downloaded the entire album because of this remake and have been enjoying the remainder of the tracks. It’s a great mix of electro pop tracks in the vein of 80s synth pop. Definitely in the vein of Richard X and similar artists. All fun but definitely the track that stands out for me is Ring My Bell. There are some really cute sounding beats on here as well. Some vocals and some instrumental cuts.

Check it out and download from eMusic. Link to sign up for free 25 downloads here. It’s worth it for sure.

Out of all the great disco singles I think Ring My Bell is certainly one of my all time favorites and I was very happy to hear this remix/remake by Miss X.

  16. Champagne by Motorfunk

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I absolutely love this track. It’s from a not very well known act from the very late 90s and early this decade called Motorfunk. They might be French but I could be wrong probably from the UK.

I found this cut off of The Dirty House Session mixed CD by Groove Armada. It’s a free disc that came with my favorite magazine of the mid to late 90s called Muzik. Lot’s of great reviews and features of awesome electronic and dance music. The magazine folded around 2003 or so but this mix is one of their great mixes that came with the magazine. I have several of the mixes and I do enjoy listening to them still every once in a while.

The track Champagne is basically sampling the Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King track Love Come Down. You kind of get that because it’s called Champagne. I kind had to listen twice to figure it out at first. I just didn’t know where the track from but I put two and two together and voila it turned out to be Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King! I absolutely dig this track because Evelyn’s version is so early 80s funk dance but this version by Motorfunk is so fast and ready for todays clubs. Even though it’s several years old now it’s still sounds fresh! I can still hear it at any hopping club.

Check out the video with Evelyn singing Love Come Down. I absolutely love her hair. Don’t you think?

And a live version which I think it’s from Solid Gold?? Maybe?

    Here are the two versions:

Love Come Down (12″ Version) by Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King
    Champagne by Motorfunk

Love Come Down (12″ Version) comes from Evelyn’s Greatest Hits CD.

I love this track. Faithless have taken a classic soul/disco track Strategy by Archie Bell and the Drells and sampled it to perfection and have made it the perfect background music to a wonderful soul/ funk track with a nice chill vibe. It’s perfection actually. And Maxi Jazz’s lyrics and signing works great here too.

I tried to find the video on youtube and I did find it but SONY/BMG had disabled embedding so we wont be seeing it here. If you feel like it check it out on youtube! But you got the great songs below! Both are great!

  18. Je T’aime…Moi Non Plus by Donna Summer

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Thank God It’s Friday is the forgettable film about the disco nightlife club world. It has a pretty good soundtrack of music by such artists as Thelma Houston, Diana Ross, Commodores, Cameo, Santa Esmeralda and of course several tracks by Ms. Donna Summer. The big hit on the soundtrack is of course Last Dance. There’s two versions the regular and of course the reprise version just before the last track on the soundtrack – Je T’aime…Moi Non Plus. This of course is the classic 60s French track by Serge Gainsbourg and featuring the great voice of his wife Jane Birkin.

Unfortunately the Donna Summer version which clocks in at 15 minutes and 36 seconds (pretty long for a track) doesn’t do anything for me. I love Donna Summers music especially the song I Feel Love – a true classic electronic disco masterpiece produced by the king himself Giorgio Moroder but unfortunately this remake just sucks! It sucks just like the film it’s from and it’s unfortunately really, really long so I just skip it. Well I don’t really listen to it.

What do you think of the two versions? I love the original. You?

  19. Miss Broadway by Glass Candy

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Here’s a toned down synth remake of Paris, France’s Belle Epoque’s Miss Broadway. Miss Broadway was Belle Epoque’s second hit in the 70s and the only hit in the US. Glass Candy has remade the track and contributed to the After Dark compilation for the Italians Do It Better! label. It’s a really fun version but quite chill and mellow compared to the original by Belle Epoque.

I do enjoy Glass Candy’s music alot and their album Beat Box which also contains a cover of the Krafwerk classic Computer Love. Most of their music is pretty toned down and mellow – nothing to really get the party started. Mostly for winding down which is good.

The After Dark compilation includes a bunch of great tracks in the synth electronic style including a cover of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life which is one of my all time favorite disco songs.

So tell me what you think of the two versions. Come on feel to comment.

  20. Rock Your Body by Shawn Lee & The Ping Pong Orchestra

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Justin Timberlake’s Rock Your Body is a fun disco inspired pop track and was a huge hit for him. But when Shawn Lee & The Ping Pong Orchestra remade it they changed the sound and made it mostly instrumental. It still sounds like Rock Your Body but now they’ve added a loungy, jazzy touch to it with a Latin inspired big band groove. You can still hear that the 70s sound is still there.

What Shawn Lee & The Ping Pong Orchestra has done with all the tracks on Hits The Hits is taken all popular tracks by pop artists and made it all something you can play in the background without and of the lyrics getting in the way too much. It’s the perfect background music if you want the hits but you don’t want the lyrics.

It’s a great collection and it’s similar to other collections like the popular Nouvelle Vague series of 80s new wave tracks remade jazzy and loungy. Shawn Lee & The Ping Pong Orchestra’s Hits The Hits is a fun, hip lively collection of pop tracks and Rock Your Body is one of the better cuts on the disc.

Check it out and let me know what you think of this version compared to Timberlake’s version.
