  1. So Phat! Cover Sheila E. With A Love Bizarre

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I love buying compilations because with compilations you always discover unique tracks that never get heard anywhere, tracks that are remakes that just get discovered so I love the compilations a lot because it’s one of the best ways to discover new music. Such is the case with this remake of an 80s classic track A Love Bizarre by So Phat! I discovered this cover on Erotic Lounge 2 pictured below. It’s one of those Hotel Costes, Buddha Bar type compilations broken down to 2 discs one being the slower mellower disc the other being the more upbeat collection. They contain a great collection of tracks and this Sheila E. cover is certainly the discovery in this disc. The original was released 6 years ago in 2004 but I just recently got this collection and it’s certainly a good discovery. Check out both the Sheila E. version which has some vocals by Prince and the new So Phat! version of A Love Bizarre.

  2. Billie Jean by Shinehead

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

The anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death came and went last week so I figured I’d do at least one post of a cover or sample or remix of a famous Michael Jackson track. I figured posting about this Shinehead cover of his big hit Billie Jean. I only discovered this cover a little over ten years ago and it dates way back to just after Mr. Jackson had released his big hit – 1984. I love this remake and I love how it has a very chill summery hot sunny sound to it. It’s perfect in Shineheads trademark dub and dancehall style. From Shinehead’s album Rough & Rugged. Bet you didn’t know this cover existed did you?

  3. Shiny Toy Guns Cover Peter Schilling With Major Tom (Coming Home)

Here’s a pretty darn cool remake of one of my favorite songs from the late 80s! I used to hear this on Live 105 all the time when it became a hit and was a fan of Peter Schilling’s album A Different Story so I was happy to have heard that there was a darn cool remake for this song. Cool of a remake to make it into a Lincoln commercial. Well Lincoln I don’t really care about but the Shiny Toy Guns version is certainly bringing back memories of the late 80s. What do you think of the two versions?

Prior to this song I hadn’t heard of Shiny Toy Guns much in fact not at all but because of this I had to go download their album Girls Le Disko. It’s certainly worth owning! Good enough is a live German version of the Peter Schilling song below.

I like this remake of the classic Hall & Oates song I Can’t Go For That by The Bird And The Bee. This is taken from the Bird And The Bee album called Interpreting The Masters – A Tribute To Darryl Hall And John Oates. The album is full of Hall & Oates covers with the Bird And The Bee frontwomans trademark vocals. Cute and mellow tracks with a 70s radio feel you can chill to at home or relax to on your way to work.

Here’s the list of songs on the album:
    I Can’t Go For That
    Rich Girl
    Sara Smile

  5. Children (Tilt’s Courtyard Mix) by Tilt Covers Robert Miles

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Ok I have to admit I was a fan of Children by Robert Miles when it first came out but it soon became overplayed and too pop cheesy. So I forgot about it real quick. 3 years later I noticed Tilt remaking the Robert Miles dream trance hit so I was curious to check it out. To my surprise it was pretty darn cool an awesome progressive trance release from one of my fave trance acts in the late 90s. Tilt was praised by many of the top DJs from the UK including Paul Oakenfold, Sasha and John Digweed.

In addition to Children, Tilt had several other trance releases including I Dream, Invisible, Butterfly, Rendevouz and What’s This. All some of my fave trance cuts back in the day and definitely worth checking out.

I still think this version of Children is the superior one over both. I especially love the cheesy Jason Voorhees/Friday The 13th sound effects added in this track. Ok it’s certainly cheesy but in a cool kind of way. Check out both below. The original Rober Miles version which became a worldwide hit and the the trance cover by Tilt in 1999. What do you think?

    Bossasonic-Club-Life

This is fun sunny version of Wham!s Club Tropicana from the little known band Bossasonic. Very island/Brazil inspired. Whereas the Wham! version was also island inspired it has that classic 80s sound to it. This version by Bossasonic definitely has the jazz thing going. I can see this version played at a fun cocktail club/theater as it has that vibe going. Check them out both. I love both and I can listen to them over and over again. The song is from the Bossasonic album Club Life. Check out Bossasonic on Myspace.

It’s been given the trademark Blue Man Group tribal drum feel here so it’s really fast and energetic. I still love the Donna Summer version produced by Giorgio Moroder bu this version is perfect as a remake. It’s the complete opposite of disco. Check them both out below and enjoy the video as well. I was never a big fan of In And Out Of My Life by Adeva but this remix has changed my opinion about this house classic from 1988. It’s been remixed and remade countless times but this remix by Eric Prydz wins me over. Eric Prydz gives it a slight electro touch to the house music classic. Check them both out below. Giorgio-Moroder-Midnight-Express

Hey! Giorgio Moroder is one of the masters of electronic music so I’m a very big fan of his stuff including his solo work, his work with Donna Summer and everything else! Chase is one of my all time favorite tracks. It’s the theme track to the film Midnight Express. I always thought that was such an odd combo with Giorgio Moroder doing the soundtrack to Midnight Express but it worked. Well the music really works for me. When I heard this very upbeat version of Chase by DuOud in very Middle Eastern/Arab style I was like this should have been the version in Midnight Express!!

Anyway this version rocks! Check it out as both version are below for you to download and compare. Obviously the Giorgio Moroder version is very 70s disco and the DuOud version is well a remake with the very Middle Eastern instruments including the Oud which the band DuOud takes their name from. Worth the download!

Chase is off of the album Wild Serenade. It’s chock full of Arab and Middle Eastern world beats. If you are a fan of this type of music then it’s definitely an album worth having in your collection.

    Huff-And-Herb-Feeling-Good-SingleBuddha-Bar-1-CD-Cover

I had not heard of this track Feeling Good (Epic Mix) by Huff & Herb back when it came out in 1997. It’s basically a sample of Feeling Good by Nina Simone. This of course the Epic Mix is remixed by the genius Rollo of Faithless fame and the brother of Dido! Anyway I first heard it several years later when Buddha Bar 1 came out. It’s a pretty darn good mix and of course a remix by Rollo with his signature sound. And I love how Nina Simone’s voice is perfect against the electronic dance beats! Pretty risque pic of Nina below … didn’t know she did that type of stuff! In the nude!!!!!!!!

    Nina-Simone-Nude-Portrait

Check it out below and compare the original with a very minimal background well at least the first part of the song is pretty minimal and the Huff & Herb version with the Rollo Epic Mix. Hey who doesn’t love the Labelle disco funk hit Lady Marmalade? It’s a pretty darn big hit from the disco era and it’s still pretty popular today. I love this remake though from Lords Of Acid. They have made it into a sleazy industrial electrofied version. A bit cheesy at some points when the moaning comes in (ok that’s signature Lords Of Acid) but the beats are pretty darn cool still. This remake is 10 years old … wow time flies but I think it’s still got legs. It doesn’t sound too dated.

  13. Supernature (William Orbit’s Mix) by Erasure

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Erasure released Supernature as a B side to their single Blue Savannah back in 1989 just after their big successful Chains Of Love song came out a couple of years prior. So this was pretty darn big. Lots of great remixes of Blue Savannah and of course this awesome remix of Supernature by William Orbit. The Cerrone disco classic was reinvented in a whole new style. This is a pretty darn great remake and I still listen to. It has slight touches of the disco sound but also has a very synth background – more in line with the 80s synth sound that Vince Clarke was known for.

This version is pretty darn long and again it’s pretty darn good. I love the Cerrone version of Supernature and I really do love this as well. Cerrone and along with Giorgio Moroder are my 2 favorite disco producers and this original is still one of my favorite Euro Disco tracks. Listen below and compare the two versions.

Don’t know much about this release of Birth, School, Work, Death by Manhead Featuring Christian Cruz but I sure do know the original by The Godfathers. The one hit wonder modern rockers that I heard countless times on Live 105. It’s a pretty darn good track the original that is but the remake is not as exciting as the original but it really does grow on you. What do you think? It’s a midtempo clubby electro sounding update and yes it truly does grow on you. It’s quite fun!

  18. Disco’s Revenge by Maxence Cyrin

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Wow? What can I say about this remake to Disco’s Revenge? I loved the original version of Disco’s Revenge by Gusto back in the mid to late 90s. It was one of those house/club tracks that you’d find in the countless double mix CD’s available for sale. It was the kind of track that would really get you more into the groove of things as it would be perfect in a mix. It was that kind of a track. Nothing too big but still great and a semi hit around 1996. Well what Maxence has done is completely remade the track with a piano. His piano playing is amazing and I found this version on MEZZANINE de L’ALCAZAR volume 5 – Dinner Time by Rouge Rouge mix CD and I was like WOW! What have they done? It’s awesome!

This remake comes off of his Modern Rhapsodies CD which also has versions of Behind The Wheel by Depeche Mode, Go by Moby, Don’t You Want Me by Felix, Windowlicker by Aphex Twin and more! Imagine all of your favorite electronic and dance tracks all remade with only a piano? WOW pretty cool.

  21. The Windmills Of Your Mind by Orange Factory

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I just love this remake of the classic Noel Harrison track from the film The Thomas Crown Affair. This is a nice midtempo piece by Orange Factory a downtempo chillout act. They are not very well known as I can’t find much information about them but they are from the Irma Music label in Bologna Italy. One of my favorite labels and this remake is pretty darn good. It’s all instrumental just like it should be. Nice background music you can chill too. Although I love the Dusty Springfield version which I have below for you all to compare to. What do you think? In the film The Thomas Crown Affair (the original version with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway) was an instrumental piece. Later Dusty Springfield had sung it which became a pretty nice hit for her.

The Windmills Of Your Mind was written by Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman and Michel LeGrand with the French title being Les moulins de mon cœur.

BTW Sting did a cover version of The Windmills Of Your Mind for the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair.

  22. Peter Gunn (Turntable Detective) by The Killergroove Formula

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I’ve always loved Henry Mancini. His music is timeless and it’s got a hip factor to it in a cheesy way. I often seek out remakes of Mancini’s works and this one especially caught my ear.

I got it off of the compilation Lounge Records Sampler, Vol. 2 – Past, Present & Future. It’s a decent compilation with the stand out cut being the Peter Gunn track by The Killergroove Formula. There’s also a remix by Fort Knox Five of Are You Talking To Me??? by Torpedo Boyz, Flight Over Rio by Timax and a cover (I like covers if you haven’t guessed already) of Harvest For The World by Seductive Souls which is a cover of the Isley Brothers original.

This remake or cover is quite good if not better than the original. It’s fast and quite upbeat with a quirky retro sounding electronic dance beat. What do you think? The original is still quite good but this is great too.

  23. Everybody Wants To Rule The World (Open Air Remix) by Chosen Few Vs. Tears For Fears

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I love this! The old tired Tears For Fears track that’s been so overplayed gets the awesome remix treatment. It’s not anything cutting edge here just straight on club beats and very nice, fast and energetic. It’s the kind of track you probably would be hearing in a mix that you’ve been dancing to for quite a while.

I found this remix on a compilation called Stonewall which is a pretty generic mix of music pop dance music that was not excellent but did the job of serving up tasty pop, dance, remix club hits.

But the single is available if you can find it somewhere. I’m looking myself since the version of this track I have below at the link is taken from (obviously) a mix CD so it’s not the entire track but you’ll still get the idea. Check it out and compare it to the original.

  24. Hide U by Suzanne Palmer and Kosheen

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

When this song came out there was so much controversy surrounding it. It was recorded by Kosheen which I think is the better of the two versions but Suzanne Palmer from the Star *69 Records gang had the better remixes more housey and club friendly as Star *69 Records have known to be. But why release it at the same time? I don’t think it hurt either artist but was a stupid thing to do as it confused people!

I heard the Kosheen version first and it left an impression on me and their first album Resist is quite amazing! In my book the Kosheen version is still better – dark and moody with great drum & bass background and my favorite out of the two. What do you think? Which is the better for you?
