  1. Move (Original) by Tim Healey & Marc Adamo

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

The huge rave monster by The Shamen, Move Any Mountain has been remade by Tim Healey & Marc Adamo. Getting it ready for the 20th anniversary of The Shamen release. Originally it was called Progen but later when they got signed to Sony Records they renamed the song and repackaged the single with countless remixes and an awesome first album En-Tact which was also remixed for the USA.

Here Tim Healey & Marc Adamo have taken that huge rave dance hit and made an update to it for today. This version is the original and it’s the one that has the most vocals and the one that makes it really feel like an actual cover. Whatever you want to call it a cover, sample, remake they are all possibilities and this is a nice update. I just love hearing new versions of old classics and this one really takes me back to when rave culture had exploded and dance and techno music was all over the place including being played on Live 105 here in SF! Those were the good old days! There are two other remixes with this release and the remix to note is the Dirtycloud Remix. Click the album cover below to hear the remixes from this release which I highly recommend.

  2. Over The Hill by Tim Taylor VS Thor 54 Samples Hills Of Katmandu by Tantra

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Such an epic disco classic track Tantra’s Hills of Katmandu is and Tim Taylor VS Thor 54 have actually perfected on that classic track. Both versions are quite amazing and Hills Of Katmandu is one of my all time favorite disco tracks. It still sounds quite fresh and way ahead of it’s time when this was first released back in 1979 30+ years ago. Ok it’s not your typical disco track that you would find on an American disco compilation but it’s so worth hearing, owning, loving and appreciating. It’s classic underground, it’s very underground dance club, Studio 54 and so on. Those of you disco lovers will appreciate the original here. It’s a fine example of Euro Electro Disco bordering on Hi-NRG and Italo Disco that would later come into the mainstream. The original, original version of Hills of Katmandu is over 16 minutes long. The version I have here is a mix by legendary San Francisco DJ/musician Patrick Cowley which makes it a little shorter but adding a little more deeper bassline.

You will also appreciate the remake by Tim Taylor VS Thor 54. It’s tribal techno electro house at it’s best. Released back in 2001 almost 10 years now but still sounding fresh, It’s certainly a great update. They have sampled Hills Of Katmandu perfectly. Check them both out below.

  3. Blank & Jones Remake People Are Still Having Sex by LaTour

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Blank & Jones having taken the LaTour classic dance track from 20 years ago and have remade updated it for now. I do remember when the It’s kept in their traditional style even the vocals sound pretty similar although I like LaTour’s vocals much better especially since he was a voice over actor and it’s obvious. This version is quite cool and the CD single/digital download has several remixes so they are all worth it for any of you dance/club/house/trance heads. Much worth it so check out their other remixes by clicking on the album cover below. I don’t think this remake will be as big as their remake of the Cure classic A Forest but still definitely worth it.

  4. Moonbootica Cover House Of Pain’s Jump Around!

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is a pretty awesome electrofied remake of the House Of Pain hip hop classic from the early 90s! Dark, sleazy electro beats with robotic vox. It’s quite nice and I love it when they take such a classic track from a genre and remake the hell out of it which is what Moonbootica have done here. Good for them! I first heard of Moonbootica with a remix of Tessio the Luomo track from 2001 or so. Later they exploded with a remix of Mundian To Bach Ke the Punjabi MC bhangra hit. So they’ve been remixing for a while now and this track is certainly a solid remake. This remake goes back to 2007 so it’s already a bit old but still fresh sounding. As we approach the 20th anniversary of the House of Pain classic Jump Around this will make do for us as it’s certainly the future in sound.

If you like their sound you should also check out their release Men Of The Future. It’s quite a nice electro/disco cut and certainly worth hearing it on repeat. It’s quite the sexy, late night groove.

  5. Electrotheque Cover Hot Chocolate With Every 1′s A Winner

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This one’s a fun remake cover track of the popular disco classic Every 1′s A Winner by Hot Chocolate. Electrotheque keep the spirit of the original but they add a funky house robotic groove to their version which somewhat similar to Daft Punks sound which is pretty darn cool. Most of the vocals are removed in this remake except for quiet robotic vox thrown in all of over the place. I don’t remember hearing this back when it came out in 1998 (even though I was buying up all kinds of music back then) when dance music was all over the place but I discovered on a compilation about 5 years ago and couldn’t believe that I had missed such a cool remake. Disco songs were being remixed and remade all over the place in the 90s so for some odd reason I had missed this but glad I discovered it. Even though I like You Sexy Thing, Hot Chocolates bigger hit this song in my book is the stronger of the two and this remix/remake by Electrotheque works wonders. Enjoy both versions below.

  7. Lily Allen Covers Mr. Blue Sky by ELO (Electric Light Orchestra)

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Ran across this awesome compilation series from France called La Musique De Paris Derniere. I believe these are compilations from a French TV show but I would need to do some research first to be correct. These compilations contain remakes, remixes of well known songs. Including this unreleased version of a very bouncy, poppy Lily Allen remake of the ELO classic Mr. Blue Sky. It’s fun and the recording is in her typical style. So if you’re a fan of Lily Allen then this is right up your alley. Check them both out below. And do check out the series as there are 7 discs now and all are fun. I love them. There remakes of so many songs you are familiar with I’m sure. Including:

    Beat Goes On
    Light My Fire
    I Can’t Get No Satisfaction
    Dancing Queen
    Happy Together
Can’t Take My Eyes Off You
    Ashes To Ashes
    What A Wonderful World
    Space Oddity
    The Girl From Ipanema
    Like A Virgin
    Highway To Hell
    Walk On By
    Proud Mary
    Hotel California
    Billie Jean
    Da Ya Think I’m Sexy
    Tainted Love

And many, many more remakes by lesser known acts, new bands old ones etc. So I highly recommend these compilations click the album artwork below to download more tracks from this great series called La Musique De Paris Derniere.

  8. Italian Secret Service Cover Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I think every song should be remixed, remade, sampled even such a classic song like Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. I love the idea of taking a song that’s recognized in a genre and switching it on everyone and rerecording it in a complete different style. And here it’s done quite well by Italian Secret Service from Irma Records out of Italy. This remake takes me back to the early 60s, innocent jazzy easy listening music. It’s fun and this really works just grab yourself a mai tai and enjoy.

I love it when musicians take a song that’s so well known from an era with such a specific genre and put a new spin on it. This is the fact with Dalminjo Featuring Anja Oyen Vister covering The Smiths classic There Is A Light That Never Goes Out. Dalminjo is known for jazzy housed up club and electronic music and he’s remade this very well known Smiths track and made it housed up clubby but nothing too obnoxious with the beats sort of laidback but you know midtempo. This is the remixed version below as the original version is pretty mellow minimal. Check it out here with the original Smiths version. I like it and I do like it that he’s used Anja Oyen Vister to record the vocals so hearing this with female vocals is a pretty cool thing. What do you think?

  10. People Hold On by [Re: Jazz] Feat. Tobias Kremer Big Band Vocals Inga Lühning

I love this … [Re: Jazz] have taken the Lisa Stansfield dance pop smash and made it into a jazzing vocal track and I think it works perfectly. Don’t you think? Check the two versions out and write a comment. The [Re: Jazz] version is much more mellower and of course perfect played by [Re: Jazz]. I can just picture it performed in an intimate jazz club whereas the version by Lisa Stansfield is perfect in a nightclub or heard from a radio station. I love them both.

Also the original Lisa Stansfield version is produced by Coldcut!! Nice one.

  11. Sex Beat (Remix) by Two Lone Swordsmen

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I’ve never really been a fan of The Gun Club but I do love their track Sex Beat. The LA punk band really delivers on this track. What I really love though are the remakes by Two Lone Swordsmen especially the remix of their version.

The vocals by the The Lone Swordsmen are dark, moody and the beats are fast and pounding. This track is not for your typical club but I could see it in an Industrial or darker clubs out there. What do you think?

The original is off The Two Lone Swordsmen’s album called From The Double Gone Chapel but the remix of course is from the Sex Beat single. Their sound on this album is more dub and seventies sounding than their previous efforts. Two Lone Swordsmen is off of the famous Warp Records! A who’s who of dark electronica. Cool stuff.

Gun Club doing Sex Beat live on stage … not my cup of tea but still love the original of this song.

  12. Ring My Bell (Miss X Remix) by Miss X

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Here’s a very popular 70s disco classic Ring My Bell by Anita Ward that’s been taken and given the upbeat deep bass treatment by Miss X. I don’t know much about this band and I certainly can’t find any info about them online. Their album is available as a download on Amazon, iTunes and eMusic which is where I downloaded.

I specifically downloaded the entire album because of this remake and have been enjoying the remainder of the tracks. It’s a great mix of electro pop tracks in the vein of 80s synth pop. Definitely in the vein of Richard X and similar artists. All fun but definitely the track that stands out for me is Ring My Bell. There are some really cute sounding beats on here as well. Some vocals and some instrumental cuts.

Check it out and download from eMusic. Link to sign up for free 25 downloads here. It’s worth it for sure.

  13. Personal Jesus (JLF Extended Remix) by John Lord Fonda

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Depeche Mode again? Yes! I think the best covers and remixes are of Depeche Mode songs. One of my all time favorite bands and I love it when they remix their own tracks and allow for others to cover or remake them. This one’s a really nice one! It’s by John Lord Fonda from France. It’s been given the energized dark and sleazy electro industrial touch to it with elements of the original version from Depeche Mode. Including the heavy breathing sounds and the “Reach Out And Touch Faith” lyrics.

Prior to discovering this remake I had never heard of John Lord Fonda? Do you folks know of this guy? His album DeBaser 2 which is the accompanying album to DeBaser. Both are great and worth owning if you want new music to discover and check out. If you’re at all into Vitalic (one of my favorites), The Hacker (another of my favorites) do check out John Lord Fonda as I think you’ll dig his music.

  14. Sex Dwarf by Dirty Sanchez

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Ok! Sex Dwarf is already a pretty sleazy track by Soft Cell. Taken off of their masterpiece first release Non Stop Erotic Cabaret that contained the worldwide new wave hit Tainted Love, Sex Dwarf was not really really a hit for them. It wasn’t even released as a single but it made some waves in the late 80s and early 90s on Modern Rock and College radio stations. That is when I first heard the Soft Cell version of Sex Dwarf. I quickly fell in love with the song.

Now we have a remake or cover shall we say by Dirty Sanchez that takes the original Sex Dwarf by Soft Cell and they add their signature electrosexual sleazy naughty sound to it. The Dirty Sanchez version comes off of their Really Rich Italian Satanists ep of four songs that includes the underground sleazier hit Fucking On The Dancefloor. You got to check out Dirty Sanchez if you haven’t already. If you are at all into electro or anything that sounds a bit 80s or if you are into RuPaul then Dirty Sanchez is up your alley.

I do like the original Sex Dwarf as it’s much superior but I could really see the Dirty Sanchez version at some underground New York or San Francisco club.

Lead singer Jackie Beat has been around for quite sometime now. Even appeared on the Wigstock Soundtrack.

I love this remake of Que Sera by Wax Tailor! Taking an old song especially like an old cheerful, bright and happy Doris Day song and remaking it in this style is awesome.

Wax Tailor is a French Trip-Hop/Hip Hop producer/artists that’s released several eps and albums and this is one of my favorite remakes as of recently – last couple of years. He’s worked with folks like Sharon Jones and Ursula Rucker. This track comes off of his first full album Tales From The Forgotten Melodies. Check it out as it’s a great release. 16. You Showed Me (Radio Edit) by The Lightning Seeds

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I love this remake by The Lightning Seeds of the Turtles song You Show Me from the 60s. This Lightning Seeds version was featured in the first Austin Powers film but I don’t have the soundtrack to the film I actually have the single this was fulled from which also has several trip hop style remixes but unfortunately those versions are not as good as the original version. Also I really fell in love with this version after the first Austin Powers film was released and had been sort of a bomb at the box office and later caught momentum in the rentals and finally 2 very successful sequels that followed the films.

This remake is 12 years old now but still sounds quite fresh. What do you think of the Lightning Seeds version compared to The Turtles version? The Turtles version sounds a bit flat compared to the 12 year old Lightning Seeds version but they are both good. Check out the video below as well.

  18. Cities In Dust (Radio Edit) by Junkie XL Featuring Lauren Rocket

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Here’s a great version of Cities In Dust by Junkie XL. I’ve always a big real big fan of the original by Siouxsie & The Banshees and it’s refreshing to see this update – it’s quite big sounding and upbeat and energetic. I even like the voice of Lauren Rocket here on this. I don’t know much about Lauren Rocket but I do know that she is in an LA punk band. Whatever she’s in I think the JXL version works. This is from the single release from Junkie XL with several great remixes and this one the radio edit is a good one to start out with. There are some even more energetic remixes on here but this brings back memories of the 80s.

Since I’ve loved the Extended Version by Siouxsie I think I’ve always wanted a pumped up electrofied version of this classic 80s song so this single really works for me. What do you think?

  19. Wild Thing (Peaches Extended Remix) by Tone-Loc

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Here’s a really fun remix of the classic 1980′s hip-hop song. Peaches has taken the song and added electro rock touches to it and also added her nasty vocals to it. I think it really works. The only prob I have with this recording is that there’s some really odd audio probs with it. I’ve downloaded the entire album Rmxxology both from Amazon MP3 and emusic and there seems to be some clipping. And it’s not only this recording it’s the entire album. Maybe the audio clipping is for effect? Anyone know?

It kind of spoils the music but the remix is still fun and I love both the original and the Peaches remix. Peaches rocks! Don’t you think so?

  20. U.K. Girls (Physical) by Goldfrapp

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Here’s a pretty cool and chill version of the 80s Olivia Newton-John track Physical by Goldfrapp. This is off of the Utopia Ep which contains several remixes of Utopia and has a couple of bonus tracks like this cover. This isn’t your traditional cover it’s more like a mash-up although I think it’s just two songs as one.

I like this version by Goldfrapp especially since it does not sound like the original high nrg early 80s dance pop song. It’s quite cool and moody. I think it’s more along the line of Goldfrapp’s Felt Mountain style of chill – trip hop sound that made them huge. I think this remake would have also worked if they used their electro glam synth sound that was hugely sound of the Black Cherry album. I would have appreciated some remixes of this track as well – would have been fun but I get the focus of the Utopia single is Utopia and not U.K. Girls (Physical).

Here’s a fun French version of Nancy Sinatra’s go- go classic. I love this as I can hardly sing it and I can sing the original for sure in English but the fact that I can’t sing this makes it all that more unique.

This series Femmes De Paris is a great collection of young French pop divas from the 60s singing original and cover songs from British and American hits. I love the collection and it’s definitely worth owning for anyone interested in this type of music. They are sure fun and will get folks talking and chatting at a party.

  22. It’s Not Over Yet by Klaxons

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I love this … I love the fact that a punk/rock/dance band has taken a electronic/dance song from the 90s and totally made it their own. It’s perfection. I remember listening to Not Over Yet by Grace back in the mid 90′s over and over again. The various remixes by BT, Danny Tenaglia, Dancing Divas and etc. This track was released off of Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto label – later on Reprise here in the states. And I remember listening to the many reincarnations of Not Over Yet – the tranced up versions that came out in 1999 as Planet Perfecto Presents Grace. Those were quite nice.

But this Klaxons version is perfect if not excellent. I love the guitars and the vocals – they are all perfectly blended together. Don’t you think? Check out the video as well.

  23. Je T’aime…Moi Non Plus by Donna Summer

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Thank God It’s Friday is the forgettable film about the disco nightlife club world. It has a pretty good soundtrack of music by such artists as Thelma Houston, Diana Ross, Commodores, Cameo, Santa Esmeralda and of course several tracks by Ms. Donna Summer. The big hit on the soundtrack is of course Last Dance. There’s two versions the regular and of course the reprise version just before the last track on the soundtrack – Je T’aime…Moi Non Plus. This of course is the classic 60s French track by Serge Gainsbourg and featuring the great voice of his wife Jane Birkin.

Unfortunately the Donna Summer version which clocks in at 15 minutes and 36 seconds (pretty long for a track) doesn’t do anything for me. I love Donna Summers music especially the song I Feel Love – a true classic electronic disco masterpiece produced by the king himself Giorgio Moroder but unfortunately this remake just sucks! It sucks just like the film it’s from and it’s unfortunately really, really long so I just skip it. Well I don’t really listen to it.

What do you think of the two versions? I love the original. You?

  24. Planet Rock by Paul Oakenfold/Afrika Bambaata

This update by Paul Oakenfold is for the film Swordfish starring John Travolta, Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman. It’s not a perfect film but was fun at the time. I love the remixes of Planet Rock much better than the film though. I like the simple yet great update by Paul Oakenfold the Swordfish Mix and of course the Litman and Cox Club Mix which is loud, fast, bouncy and all over the place.

The original is still a classic and I still listen to it but these remixes still sound fresh even though they came out back in 2001 – almost ten years ago. Boy time flies and if remixes like these still sound fresh that’s all that matters.

What do you think of the 2 newer versions compared to the original vocal version from back in the early 80s? I pick the Litman & Cox remix as it’s quite different from the original and even the Swordfish remix is quite similar to the original. You?

  25. Miss Broadway by Glass Candy

Here’s a toned down synth remake of Paris, France’s Belle Epoque’s Miss Broadway. Miss Broadway was Belle Epoque’s second hit in the 70s and the only hit in the US. Glass Candy has remade the track and contributed to the After Dark compilation for the Italians Do It Better! label. It’s a really fun version but quite chill and mellow compared to the original by Belle Epoque.

I do enjoy Glass Candy’s music alot and their album Beat Box which also contains a cover of the Krafwerk classic Computer Love. Most of their music is pretty toned down and mellow – nothing to really get the party started. Mostly for winding down which is good.

The After Dark compilation includes a bunch of great tracks in the synth electronic style including a cover of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life which is one of my all time favorite disco songs.

So tell me what you think of the two versions. Come on feel to comment.
