RuPaul Covers Depeche Mode With People Are People

Since Depeche Mode came out with an amazing collection of remixes called Depeche Mode – Remixes 2: 81-11 I just had to share another Depeche Mode cover here and figured this remake of People Are People by RuPaul for the Depeche Mode 80s classic that got me introduced to the band was the one to put up. People are People is one of the rare songs that still sounds good today. Although People Are People is one of their more poppier songs I still love it and always seek out any remixes or remakes of this song. Unfortunately though I have not heard of any official remixes from Depeche Mode themselves and it’s rarely covered too. I hope when Depeche Mode release Remixes 3 they will actually finally remix this song as it deserves it! Yes?

But then again there’s this pretty darn good club/house remake by RuPaul! RuPaul you say? Well I guess she’s been making music since the mid 90s! This came out in 2005 but I somehow missed it when it came out but later discovered it somehow when I was searching for People Are People. The People Are People (Giuseppe D’s Rutroactive Club Mix) by RuPaul even contains samples of the machine sound effects from the original Depeche Mode version of People Are People. So I give RuPaul some credit for doing this. The original Depeche Mode versions of People Are People is still very special place in my heart. I was a very young teen and discovered this greatest new band Depeche Mode that produced this awesome electronic/synth pop dance music and since then I’ve been hooked on to the sounds of Depeche Mode. But I’m always looking for new versions of old songs and this just does it for me. The original version of People Are People is available on People Are People the album from Depeche Mode and also on Some Great Reward as well as their countless Greatest Hits albums. RuPaul’s version is off of People Are People the single with countless remixes of People Are People, on RuPaul Red Hot and RuPaul ReWorked. Behind The Wheel by Playgroup Covers Depeche Mode

Since Depeche Mode came out with an excellent 3CD remix collection of songs remixed called Depeche Mode Remixes 2 Collection 1981 – 2011 I wanted to do several posts in the coming days related to other covers or remixes or tracks that sample Depeche Mode’s excellent catalog of electronic synth pop/rock tracks. Since Depeche Mode is one of favorite bands going back to the early 80s I always look for any remixes, covers or anyone sampling their music.

Playgroup did a pretty nice reinterpretation of Behind The Wheel here almost 10 years ago now during the height of the Electroclash movement along with bands like Miss Kittin & The Hacker, Fischespooner and Ladytron. Behind The Wheel by Playgroup is very similar in sound to the original Depeche Mode version from their Music For The Masses album it just sounds hip and more sonically fresher than from what was on Music For The Masses. Although I love the remixes on Depeche Mode’s Behind The Wheel Maxi Single as there are multiple versions and remixes of both Behind The Wheel and Route 66. The version missing on the Behind The Wheel single is the Behind The Wheel/Route 66 mash-up that I’ve come to love over the years. If you can get your hands on that it’s awesome!

Depeche Mode Remixes 2 Collection 1981 – 2011 also contains a new remix of Behind The Wheel by Vince Clarke the once member of Depeche Mode who left Depeche Mode to start Yaz and Erasure.

Other versions of Depeche Mode’s Behind The Wheel you might like are Behind The Wheel by Maxence Cyrin which completely reinvents Behind The Wheel as a classical piano piece. Worth it highly not only for Behind The Wheel but Maxence Cyrin’s Modern Rhapsodies album also contains classical piano reinterpretations of other well known dance tracks remade in classical piano format. This is not cheesy stuff trust me they are good. Classical Piano versions of Smokebelch by Sabres Of Paradise, Windowlicker by Aphex Twin, Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack, Go by Moby, L.F.O. by L.F.O and many more dance cuts reinterpreted by Maxence Cyrin.

Or you might dig this industrial version of Behind The Wheel by OB1. It’s not industrial rock in no means it’s reminding me of bands from the late 80s/early 90s bands like Front 242 or Frontline Assembly which I quite dig as Depeche Mode’s music lends itself very well to the industrial sound. So I recommend this single by OB1 for their version of Behind The Wheel.

Everybody Dance (Chic Inspirational Mix) by Evolution

Deconstruction was the reliable dance music label from the UK to turn to in the very early 90s! I mean come on they released the huge Black Box singles Everybody, Everybody, I Don’t Know Anybody Else, Strike It Up and of course their huge album Dreamland. But it was more than Black Box. There were huge acts that came from this legendary label. M People, K-Klass, Kylie was there for a bit, Robert Miles, Felix with their huge hit Don’t You Want Me, Hyper Go Go with their hit High, The Grid, N-Joi and of course this little known act and cover of a Chic song Evolution doing Everybody Dance.

This song Everybody Dance is a very similar remake of the original disco classic by Chic. It’s a bit more uplifting and soulful and a bit infused with a gospel house feel. It’s nothing original but this came out during the disco revival thing and was a pretty big hit for Evolution. Although later in the late 90s and early 2000s Evolutions sound completely changed to a more progressive house sound. Check out their album Unnatural Selection and their hit Walking On Fire. Completely different sound but it was obvious that they would go that direction and signed to John Digweed’s Bedrock label.

Sweet Child O’ Mine by Flat Pack Covers Guns N’ Roses

Those of you that know anything about Mylo will know where the name of this website comes from. One of my favorite albums from the 2000′s and perhaps for the last 20 years is the album Destroy Rock And Roll byMylo. Destroy Rock And Roll was chock full of some of the best dance music around. Included excellent cuts like Destroy Rock And Roll, Drop The Pressure, Muscle Cars, Muscle Car Reform Reprise, In My Arms,Valley Of The Dolls, Paris Four Hundred, Otto’s Journey and more. The whole album was totally listenable and it still sounds fresh today. Well Mylo and his label Breastfed Records also released other artists likeLinus Loves, Radio Slave, Ran Shani and Flat Pack which released this just OK remake of a classic Guns N’ Roses classic songs Sweet Child O’ Mine by Flat Pack. I was very excited to hear this remake when it first came out in 2005 but it just wasn’t strong. Fortunately though it’s saved by the Mylo Remix which is here. What do you think? Good, bad? Sana Doris Samples Diana Ross Upside Down With Pseudo Wind

This is the strangest, gayest Diana Ross remake, sample, cover ever. I like it actually and it sounds like something RuPaul could have pulled off back in the 90s or it could have perfectly fit in the film Paris Is Burning from ’91. Though there’s no RuPaul here this remake called Pseudo Wind by Sana Doris comes to us by way of the In Flagranti guys by way of Codek Records. So it’s gotta be cool right? This is from the 12″ SOUNDS SUPERB VOL. 6 and it’s worth it. If you can’t get your hands on it do it as fast as you can. Or else you have Pseudo Wind by Sana Doris below so you can sample that and check out In Flagranti for more disco dance flavored releases. I know you are a closet disco lover so go get some In Flagranti and enjoy! They have a very sleazy, naughty disco sound that once you taste you wont go back. DMX Krew Covers Soft Cell With Seedy Films

Seedy Films along with Tainted Love, Sex Dwarf, Bedsitter and Say Hello, Wave Goodbye are excellent songs off of the now classic early 80s release Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret by Soft Cell. Soft Cell’s version is the perfect cut as part of the Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret album. It’s got a very sleazy, minimal sound and it’s dark and perfectly seedy as the title suggests. The album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret is the soundtrack for the dark seedy underworld of downtown life. Unfortunately most folks know of Soft Cell for their cover of the Gloria Jones northern soul classic song Tainted Love. But anyone who’s a fan of Tainted Love should check out the album the song comes off of as it’s highly recommended by me!

I was lucky enough to hear this new remake cover version of Seedy Films by DMX Krew about 10 years ago. The song has been given the new upbeat electro pop treatment and the darkness has been stripped that’s on the Soft Cell version. Whereas the Soft Cell version is perfect off their classic album this remake by DMX Krew works perfectly on it’s own. I still enjoy this remake by DMX Krew and listen to it every so often. If you haven’t heard of it then it’s time you should enjoy it too. Links below!

CFCF Covers Ryuichi Sakamoto With Forbidden Colours

Forbidden Colours is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever recorded. It was originally released back in 1983 and was a collaboration between Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Sylvian (from the band Japan) which was also part of the soundtrack to the film Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence starring David Bowie.

So CFCF has taken that most beautiful classical and electronic new age recording by Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Sylvian and elevated it for todays ears and it works darn good. I love it. CFCF aka Mike Silver actually even sings on this recording which still makes it even better. It’s a very soft spoken quiet kind of speaking that even sounds like the original. I’ve been digging CFCF for quite sometime now. I was first introduced to his sound with some remixes he did for Sallly Shapiro later found his albums and fell in love with Big Love the Fleetwood Mac cover (which is awesome) and later I came across this recording which I love. I

I can’t wait to hear more from CFCF and I can only hope that he’s working on some more excellent cuts like what he’s released so far!

Moodswings Covers Donna Summer Covers Jon & Vangelis With State Of Independence

Boy! It was only after 15 years or so that I discovered that State Of Independence was originally remade by Donna Summer in 1982 a year after Jon & Vangelis released it off of their The Friends Of Mr. Cairo album from 1981. I have to say that the first time I heard State of Independence was the Moodswings version featuring the great Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders on vocals. But I do have to say the version Donna Summer recorded a year after the Jon & Vangelis version are so similar. Very kind of minimal with a very mellow bounce beat added in with the vocals. Kind of doesn’t go anywhere for me and I’m glad it was remade and covered in the 90s. Check them both out below.

Once you get to the Moodswings cover and the Murk remix of State Of Independence from 1996 then you get to some more excitement. The Moodswings trip hop version of State Of Independence has that euphoric, dream like quality with excellent haunting vocals from Chrissie Hynde then you get a total 360 degree turn around for the Donna Summer Murk Remix of State Of Independence. There are many more remixes on the single for Donna Summers State of Independence from 1996 but the Murk Remix is the best. A tad bit outdated today but still fun to check out.

Batman (Twist!) by Lemon

The Batman TV Theme is one of my all time favorite TV show themes and when I heard this remake by Lemon I was quickly hooked. Lemon have taken the original Batman TV theme and given it the electronic loungy treatment with a beefier bassier sound. It’s basically a remix here and I love it. If you like anything from bands like Ursula 1000, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Nicola Conte, Montefiori Cocktail, Chris Joss and Arling & Cameron you will dig their sound. And besides this is a really cool remake of a very kitschy, campy TV show theme but you have the kitsch and camp multiplied by 1000!

This Batman (Twist!) track is off of Lemon’s With A Twist album which is full of those loungy, go-go, 60s inspired fun, playful jazzy electronic tunes. One of my other favorites from With A Twist is Let’s Go! BIKINI. It’s one of those quirky, playful lo-fi electronic tracks very reminiscent to Perry & Kingsley with the added modern electronic beefiness of today. It’s so much fun! You also have a very fun sample from The Surfari’s Wipe Out track added in as a bonus! So you kind of get how fun this album is!

I decided to include David McCallum’s version below as the original and not the very original by Neal Hefti that was used on the TV show open for the Batman 1960s TV show. The original certainly has a lot of spy TV show music elements with the surf guitar music very much inspired by bands like The Ventures who covered the Batman TV show theme too and The Marketts who also did a cover of the Batman TV show theme. David McCallum’s version is off a very excellent CD series called Ultra Lounge and this version of Batman Theme is taken off the the amazing CD called Ultra-Lounge, Vol. 13: TV Town which is chock full of 60s TV show themes including The Munsters Theme, The Fugitive Theme, The Man From U.N.C.L.E./The Spies, The Mod Squad Theme and many more.

This very very famous French song originally by Francoise Hardy has been remade so many times by countless musicians. Comment Te Dire Adieu is one of my all time favorite songs and I’m always open to new versions of it. Check out the Blank & Jones version here on DestroyRockAndRoll.com. One of my favorites is this one from former Bronski Beat singer, Jimmy Somerville which was released in 1989 from his solo CD Read My Lips. Read My Lips also had another cover called You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) the Sylvester disco classic but that’s another story. Read My Lips was Jimmy’s first solo CD and it’s a very nice one. It’s chock full of very dancey pre-house, synth pop.

I discovered this cover on Jimmy’s greatest hits album in ’91 and later I had to obtain the Read My Lips CD that the song is from. It’s quite a fun pre-house synthy dance pop hit with guest vocalist June Miles Kingston. This is the type of hi-nrg dance pop music that was playing at all the clubs when this came out.
