  1. HORSE MEAT DISCO III

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Horse Meat Disco 3 picks up where Horse Meat Disco 2 left off last year and I’m digging what I hear so far! Horse Meat Disco 3 is a collection of underground disco cuts that you probably have not heard of before but definitely should as these are the disco cuts that really should be the better known ones. On Horse Meat Disco 3 there are several stand out cuts and edits or remakes/remixes of existing ones. Horse Meat Disco 3 kicks off with French trio Belle Epoque and their hit Miss Broadway with an edit here by Gazeebo. A fun poppy disco cut if you haven’t heard it then it’s certainly worthwhile. Skip ahead to Sweet Dynamite by Claudja Barry edited by Todd Terje! Wow I dig this. I love Claudja Barry’s music and this edit by Todd Terje gives Sweet Dynamite a brand new life! Like Bottin did with Lio’s Sage Oil a couple of years back!

Next up on Horse Meat Disco 3 is Fuzz Against Jazz and their really funky groovy disco number Born Under Puncher (Harvey’s Punch Drunk Mix). It’s a nice beat and I’m totally digging this cut and it’s perfectly fit in order here. What comes up next is a totally funky disco number which is also remixed by Todd Terje – Moon Jocks ‘n’ Prog Rocks by Mungolian Jetset is one awesome cut on here that I had to repeat over and over again. It sounds like it came from the 70s height of disco music but this thing was released last month. I say it’s amazing.

By now I’m really enjoying Horse Meat Disco 3 as I love the idea of mixing music from today that sounds like disco and dance from the 70s with disco music from the 70s and 80s. It’s great so far!

Dimitri From Paris & DJ Rocca Present Erodiscotique’s Downtown is perfectly mixed next into this great mix so far and how can you go wrong with Dimitri From Paris? The guy is a genius and this track, Downtown is quite nice!

I’m In Love by Yam Who? is a remake of the Sha-Lor classic from the late 80s and it’s great here and I’m In Love definitely deserves the remake treatment as it’s a long lost late 80s dance/house classic. Gosh I can still remember hearing this here in San Francisco back in the late 80s!

Billie Ray Martin? Yes it’s nice she’s back. Can you remember her in the mid 90s with her hit Your Loving Arms Around Me? Well she’s got great new stuff and this cut Sweet Suburban Disco is a standout. Let’s please get a hit out of this one!

I think the stand out cut on Horse Meat Disco 3 is You Don’t Know (Horse Meat Disco Remix) by Tambi. This thing is just awesome. I hadn’t heard of Tambi but boy I’m glad I did. You will dig it. Other cuts on Horse Meat Disco 3 include 2 cuts by Sylveseter, Idris Muhammad, The Glimmers (one of my favorite acts as of late) and Two Tons Of Fun.

Overall a great collection of cuts are represented on Horse Meat Disco 3 and perfectly mixed to perfection by the Horse Meat Disco boys. Worth of owning this great compilation. Preview the tracks below.

  2. Can You Feel The Passion (Palladium Mix) by Blue Pearl

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

What happened to Blue Pearl? Can You Feel The Passion (Palladium Mix) was one of those electronic techno house tracks that I probably overplayed back in the early 90s. It was on a compilation called Rave ‘Til Dawn and just had really nice bass to blast from your car. I was only 21! Electronic and techno house music was booming from all over the place and I was very happy! So much cool music was being released and this was one them. The song is dark, sexy with lots of moaning and groaning and it has that classic early 90s piano house touch thrown in. It was one of those tracks that combined a lot of rock and guitar elements with the electronic and techno beats with the piano house. So it was quite unique!

Can You Feel The Passion and Naked In The Rain were the only two hits released by Blue Pearl and once those came out they vanished and never to be heard from again. Although Naked In The Rain has been rereleased with new remixes several times since then I still think their bigger cooler hit was Can You Feel The Passion! What do you think? Below you will find the US Remix version and the Palladium Mix which was on the Rave ‘Til Dawn compilation.

  3. Arena (The Japanese Popstars Remix) by Daft Punk

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Tron Legacy is the excellent soundtrack from Daft Punk to an ok movie with awesome special effects. But listening to the soundtrack at home is not so much fun. It’s mostly score so when was the last time you sat down and listened to a movie score? I don’t do it often. It’s mostly ambient with some pretty big beats thrown in. I’m glad I experienced the film Tron Legacy and it’s amazing soundtrack it in the theater though as it was nice and had thunderous quality to it. My favorite cut off the original soundtrack is Castor but the damn thing is so short so I have it on repeat several times and it plays over and over again. I imagined the music would be beefed up a bit when I first got the soundtrack and finally I read of a remix album and I was quite happy when that happened.

Finally when I got Tron Legacy Reconfigured  – the remixes from the Tron Legacy soundtrack I realized this should have been accompanied with the soundtrack all along! This is the real electronic dance counterpart to the actual soundtrack score. Well better late than never right?

There are some amazing remixes on this remixes version of the Tron Legacy Soundtrack and my favorite is the the mostly ambient Arena track remixed by The Japanese Popstars. Links below. Other remixers on the Tron Legacy Reconfigured compilation include The Teddybears, Pretty Lights, Sander Kleinenberg, Avicii, Photek, Paul Oakenfold, Com Truise, Boys Noise, Kaskade, Ki: Theory, Moby, The Crystal Method The Glitch Mob and M83 with Big Black Delta. It’s a who’s who of the electronic industry with remixers from today and yesterday. I highly recommend this collection so you should go to your favorite store and download the whole collection. 5. Stay Down (Julian Jeweil Remix) by Moby

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I absolutely love it when a remix moves me and that’s just what this Julian Jeweil remix of Moby’s Stay Down did to me. It’s one of the best remixes I have heard of in quite some time. It’s quite amazing in fact and deserves to be written about. Until I heard this remix of Stay Down I had not heard of Julian Jeweil before. Who is he? Don’t know much about him but I like what I hear so far.

This remix of Stay Down is off of the Wait For Me remixes double album by Moby released last year. It’s quite the greatest remixes package and anyone into remixes should own this great lot of remixes. It rocks. There are remixes by Carl Cox, Paul Kalkbrenner, Yuksek, Gui Borrato, Laurent Wolf, Popof, Laidback Luke, Tiesto and whole bunch more. It’s certainly a killer package and this remix by Julian Jeweil is as good as the rest of the remixes. Check them out!

  6. Permanent Vacation (Selected Label Works No 2)

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Permanent Vacation (Selected Label Works No 2) is one of the coolest compilations to end up in my iTunes music library ever! I can’t stop listening to this awesome nu disco, deep house, electronic music compilation as every single track is top notch. So it’s on heavy rotation now for 4 or so months. Loads of great acts are included on this compilation including several remixes of Beam Me Up by Midnight Magic, several cuts from Tensnake, Azari & III, Sally Shapiro remixed by Bottin, Lexx, Pollyester, Woofy vs Projectsions and the track track that I keep coming back to Prism by Spectacle with a link below. Prism by Spectacle is one of those moody, very deep deep house (with a slight nu disco touch) tracks that you get addicted to and keep clicking to repeat. In other words it’s quite sexy!

Check it out at the link below and check out the rest of the Permanent Vacation (Selected Label Works No 2) tracks here. You wont be disappointed by them! Produced by Muallem which some of you might have heard of but if you haven’t check out Shanti Dance (Featuring The Droids) by Muallem. Very funky, groovy electro disco. Love that cut!

  7. Control (I’m Here) (The Hacker Remix 2006) by Nitzer Ebb

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I love a good remix of a good classic electronic cut from the 80s. I’m really digging this an awesome electro industrial, ebm classic like Control (I’m Here) by Nitzer Ebb way back from 1988 remixed by The Hacker of the Miss Kittin And The Hacker fame. I think that Nitzer Ebb are such an underrated band that anything greatest hits wise or remixes wise or even some new material they put out I’m there to hear it first. This remix of course came out in 2006 and I love what The Hacker has done to it. The original Control (I’m Here) from their excellent album Belief (which also contains Shame and Hearts and Minds) is of course what really got me into Nitzer Ebb, hearing it on the radio in San Francisco on Live 105 and finding out about them opening up for Depeche Mode countless times has made me a big fan. It’s Nitzer Ebb’s music that I got into all the industrial bands like Nine Inch Nails (pre 90s), Frontline Assembly, Front 242, Skinny Puppy, Thrill Kill Kult and more.

If only this music lasted? Probably not but whatever! We can still enjoy the classics like this. This remix by The Hacker is off of the Nitzer Ebb greatest hits CD Compilation.

  8. Love Kills (Rank 1 Remix) by Freddie Mercury

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Dutch trance act Rank 1, have remixed Freddie Mercury’s classic song Love Kills from the 80s Metropolis film revival soundtrack. Since the original film was a silent film somehow they figured there should be a new version of the film released with a new soundtrack produced by the God himself, Giorgio Moroder who also produced this classic song Love Kills for Freddie Mercury. Love Kills and Living On My Own are the two songs that really stand out from Freddie Mercury’s solo work. Although there are other songs that are available too like The Great Pretender, I Was Born To Love You, Made In Heaven but the the two former mentions are the songs I know Freddie Mercury’s solo music by. All of these mentioned tracks as well as really cool new remixes of them are available on The Very Best Of Freddie Mercury Solo album and worth it for sure as there are some really cool cuts that you probably have never heard of. It includes music from his work with soprano Montserrat Caballé.

The remix to Love Kills is by the trance act Rank 1 better known for their late 90s trance track Airwave. Here the 80s version of Love Kills is remixed to perfection by Rank 1 and I’m really digging it and I’m sure you will too? Rank 1 Remix is not the only remix of Love Kills as there are remixes by Sunshine People, Pixel82 and a rework by The Glimmers. So The Very Best Of Freddie Mercury Solo album is certainly worth checking out as those remixes and remixes of other songs are all there!

  9. Jungle Music by Walter Gibbons

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Here’s a great collection of cool edits of underground disco classics by master DJ Walter Gibbons called Jungle Music. These tracks are basically extended mixes/edits of well known and lesser known disco acts that Walter Gibbons used to spin at the clubs he had residencies in. There are cool cuts by Gladys Knight, Bettye Lavette, Double Exposure, Stetsasonic, Salsoul Orchestra and many more. If you are at all into disco or extended versions of songs then this is your compilation. Jungle Music by Walter Gibbons is highly worth owning. One of my favorites is Set It Off (Walter Gibbons 12″ Mix) by Strafe. A classic disco track that I’ve known for quite sometime now and here it’s in a 12+ minute of cool, sexy midtempo disco glory. Lovin’ it very much. Check it out below and check out the rest of the tracks from Jungle Music by Walter Gibbons here.

  10. Camino Del Sol (Todd Terje Remix) by Antena

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I recently discovered this awesome track Camino Del Sol (Todd Terje Remix) by Antena and it has really grown on me. I’m speaking about the remix to Antena’s Camino Del Sol remixed by Todd Terje from a couple of years back. The original is from way back in 1982 that I only discovered after hearing the awesome Todd Terje Remix. Actually both the original and remix are pretty new to me but the remix is quite awesome. It’s got a very chill, flowy, summery, beachy vibe that you can put on and chill to with waves crashing into the beach and with warm summer sun rays hitting your face. That’s the kind of track this is. And with the Todd Terje remix he’s added his trademark very light nu disco vibe to it that I’m really loving. The original is more lo-fi Brazil island vibe but the remix rocks!

Now I’m really curious to search out and find out more about Antena. Interesting note is Isabelle Antena is one of the 3 members from Antena and I think the band is most likely named after her last name. Right? If you are at all a fan of island chill, Brazil jazz, downtempo then Antena is your cup of tea. It’s mine too and I just love this Todd Terje Remix.

The remix is off of the remix album called Version Speciales #1 of Antena songs and there are some  awesome remixes by famous remixers and musicians. Other remixes of Antena songs on the remix collection are by bands Nouvelle Vague, Chromatics, Joakim, Phreek and Disco Devil! Worth owning if you don’t have it.

  11. Every Day Is Halloween (Retro Electro Remix) by Ministry

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

If you grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 80s and you listened to Live 105 and especially Steve Masters on Live 105 then you will surely remember Everyday Is Halloween by Ministry. Not the Ministry that is known for Jesus Built My Hotrod and NWO from the 90s but the Ministry that is known for songs like Work For Love, Effigy and I Wanted To Tell Her! The more synthy, dance pop cuts that were forced onto Ministry by Arista Records to produce under contract. Well I’m glad they were forced into it because if not then we wouldn’t have them. The pre industrial cuts Ministry did were pretty classic at least to me but unfortunately that was not what Ministry wanted to do. Right after they released their one and only album under contract to Arista Records, With Sympathy (everyone should have this in their music collection btw as I think it’s a masterpiece) they went right into industrial dance territory, EBM which later became their hard core speed metal grunge industrial aggro sound that they became mostly known for. They released Every Day Is Halloween under contract to Wax Trax Records. This is the true Ministry sound. I love their sound and style here with cuts like Every Day Is Halloween, All Day, Cold Life and more. True EBM, Industrial dance classics or whatever you want to call it. Even bordering on goth! Evidenced on the Greatest 12 Inches from the Wax Trax label. So being a big fan of Everyday Is Halloween I had to pick up the greatest hits disc called Every Day Is Halloween: The Greatest Tricks.

Ok this is kind of cheezy although I do like the beats to this remix of Every Day Is Halloween but its sounding like it’s re-recorded so the vocals sound completely different than the original. I have a feeling for this greatest hits collection they couldn’t get the rights to or couldn’t afford the rights so they re-recorded it which cost them much less. Well it’s fine. It’s almost like a cover with an updated remixed sound. I dig it! The rest of the album though, hmm. You be the judge. Every Day Is Halloween: The Greatest Tricks even has a death metal version too. Not my cup of tea. Sorry! There are plenty of remakes or covers on the album too including a cover of the Amy Winehouse classic Rehab. Ok? What next! The Theme to A Summers Place?

  12. Live For Today by Cicero & Sylvia Mason-James

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

The Crying Game soundtrack was mostly known for the song The Crying Game by Boy George. It was a whole more about that album that most folks don’t know. The album was produced by the Pet Shop Boys and included other great songs which included a remake of the Shannon 80s hit Let The Music Play by Carroll Thompson and of course two awesome versions of a little known act called Cicero with their song Live For Today sung by Sylvia Mason-James. Absolutely love the vocals by Sylvia here.

If you like Pet Shop Boys or anything synth pop from the late 80s and early 90s then you will certainly love this song by Cicero. I think they are definitely worth discovering as not much is known about Cicero. In the early 90s Cicero released an album called Future Boy but it failed to chart anywhere. Still though this song Live For Today produced by Pet Shop Boys is quite strong.

The Orchestral version is the more synthed up version whereas the Gospel version is more laidback and sort of trip-hoppy. Check them out below.

  13. Walk The Line (Laurent Wolf Remix) by Laurent Wolf

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Taking a classic country song like I Walk The Line by Johnny Cash and sampling it into a dance song is alright in my book. So when I first heard about Walk The Line by Laurent Wolf I immediately wanted to check it out. I had thoughts that it might suck or be boring but in reality it was quite cool. The sound is energetic electro with sections of the famous line ‘I Walk The Line” sung by Johnny Cash and sampled into track. It works in my book. It’s an upbeat, energetic banging electro club cut with a little bit of country thrown in. Trust me it’s not Rednex! Check it out … what do you think?

I Walk The Line by Johnny Cash
Walk The Line (Laurent Wolf Remix) by Laurent Wolf

The remix CD called Johnny Cash Remixed came out several years ago with remixes of Johnny Cash songs but I thought it was weak. Nothing like Verve Remixed or anything similar to that. Somebody did this remix project on a shoestring budget and didn’t quite achieve top notch remixes for this as I first thought I was totally going to dig it but it’s just ok in my book. 14. Forever Young (Bill Hamel Album Remix) by Alphaville

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Future Retro is an album certainly worth owning. It has some of the best songs from the 1980s remixed to todays tastes. Mostly club and electronic remixes of well known tracks such as Situation by Yaz, Need You Tonight by Inxs, The Walk by The Cure and many many more cuts. I wanted to post Forever Young today since it’s almost 2011 and I figured a remix of Forever Young by Hamel off of Future Retro would be best!

The remix is excellent and any purists will still dig this remix of Forever Young by the German synth pop band, Alphaville from the 80s. Gosh I love this song and it will always remind me of high school in the 80s! Enjoy!

This is one of the sexiest remixes made ever. Taking a very romantic and beautiful song and giving it a midtempo beat to is is alright in my book. Sexy cocktail lounge, hotel bar music is what this remix of Nina Simone’s The Look Of Love sounds like. Taken from Nina Simone’s Remixed & Reimagined CD from a few years ago and I highly recommend getting it because it’s a beautiful collection of Nina Simone recordings all updated with today’s remixing styles. I’m not as big a fan of Lady Gaga like everyone else is (I like what she does with all her costumes and all) but damn this remix of Bad Romance by Chew Fu is one of my favorite remixes of her songs. I think Chew Fu has done quite the tweaking to a much mellower pop/electro hit and made it a very very upbeat club friendly tune. It’s now almost 2 years since Bad Romance first came out but this remix of Bad Romance still sounds fresh when played today. Enjoy!

  18. I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm (Stuhr Remix) by Kay Star

Kay Starr’s version of I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm is my favorite of that song. When I heard of the remix I even loved it more. It’s been given the upbeat treatment and it’s quite fun. The original is more mellow and slightly sexy with Kay’s beautiful vocals. The remixer on this track is STUHR who I know very little about but damn he did a great job at remixing this track and bringing it to the sound of now. Well the remix is about 5 years old now but still it sounds fresh and it’s one of my all time favorite Christmas songs remixed. From the album Christmas Remixed from Six Degrees Records. Volume 2 available as well and both albums are highly recommended if you are tired of the traditional Christmas music and want something a little more unique to impress your friends and family during the holidays.

  19. Altes Kamuffel (Berlin Calling Edit) by Paul Kalkbrenner

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is the track that I skip ahead to over and over again listening to the Berlin Calling Soundtrack. It’s big, fast, somewhat dreamy and very euphoric. I absolutely love it. The Berlin Calling Soundtrack is quite good but I keep coming back to this. I always visualize a dark club, lights blaring in and out and this track blasting out of the speakers. Kind of like the scene in the film Babel. The Japanese scenes in the club. Highly recommend this track and the rest of the Berlin Calling Soundtrack.

Rapture came from nowhere in 2001 to become a huge club hit for Iio and I still remember to this day how everyone was humming that ladadida part of the song. It was more on the pop end of electronic, dance and club music but I still loved it. It’s nice to know that Nadia Ali has now gone solo and released two great remix songs albums with loads of cool new remixes of songs. There is also a new remixed version of Rapture remixed by Avicii which has been given the updated treatment to accommodate todays generation! The albums are called Queen Of Clubs Trilogy: Onyx Edition and Queen Of Clubs Trilogy: Ruby Edition which I highly recommend for anyone who was a fan of Rapture (Tastes So Sweet) by Iio or anyone into dance and electronic club music.

  22. Zat You, Santa Claus? (The Heavy Remix) by Louis Armstrong

This is quite the fun remix of a really fun christmas song. Verve continues in the tradition of their awesome Verve Remixed series with Verve Christmas Remixed. Most of the remixes are great with this remix by The Heavy of Zat You, Santa Claus being the strongest from the set. Very fun! Enjoy both original version and remix just in time for the holidays!

Fyi The Heavy refers to The Heavy from “How You Like Me Now” fame!

  23. Spooks In Space (Luke Howard & Felix Dickinson Edit) by Aural Exciters

This one’s a really quirky, fun sort of on the leftfield disco, new wave, no wave track that I really dig. I didn’t know anything about this really cool disco cut when I was growing up. I discovered it about 10 years ago after picking up the excellent disco compilation Mutant Disco from ZE Records. It’s fun really fun. Finally just earlier this year I discovered this more updated remix of the classic cut from ’79 and all I can say is it’s awesome! There’s not much difference between the two versions except that it’s slightly faster and a little groovier. If you don’t know ZE Records then you certainly have to check it out. It’s an underground New York disco/new wave label which features some really cool acts like Kid Creole & The Coconuts, Material with Nona Hendryx, Was (Not Was), Cristina, Garcons, The Waitresses, Suicide, James White & The Blacks, Caroline Loeb and many many more acts definitely worth discovering.

  24. Comment Te Dire Adieu (Beach House Mix) by Blank & Jones

This is a fun Latinized instrumental remake of the Francoise Hardy classic song Comment Te Dire Adieu by Blank & Jones. No vocals here just all instrumental music with a very chill, sexy downtempo groove. The remix is called Beach House Mix so you can just picture yourself chilling poolside or at the beach with a cocktail and with the smooth beats of this track. It’s a fun remake and certainly one of many for this very popular classic Francoise Hardy cut. This remix is off of the Blank & Jones album Relax: Edition Five Enjoy and let me know what you think of this compared to the original. Both versions below.

  25. Matt Helders Ft. Nesreen Shah Cover Dreamer by Livin’ Joy

This song was such a big deal for me back in the mid 90s that I overplayed it. It was a big pop dance crossover hit from Italy. Later I also discovered a Rollo remix and started playing that version as well. So it has a special place for me as it was def one of the bigger dance pop tunes that came out in the 90s. I was quick to want to check out when I heard about a remake of it. Sure to my surprise it’s a pretty darn cool version by Matt Helders featuring Nesreen Shah. Matt Helders is the drummer from the Arctic Monkeys and I have not idea who Nesreen Shah is but they have certainly updated a club classic 90s dance pop song and made it quite the energetic drummified bouncy update. I like it. What do you think? The track is from Ministry Of Sounds Uncovered CD which is a real cool collection of covers remakes etc. Well worth it to own!
