  1. Coco Electrik Covers Apollonia 6 With Sex Shooter

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Electropop group Coco Electrik covers Apollonia 6 hit song Sex Shooter from the Prince film Purple Rain? It’s certainly a fun take on the classic 80s dance funk song produced by Prince but the original is classic in my book and this remake falls a bit short but still fun though as I wont dismiss it completely. I just hope someone else comes around and remakes this a little better. Sex Shooter the Apollonia 6 cover by Coco Electrik is off of their Army Behind The Sun album and Sex Shooter single with bonus remixes.

  2. The Bucketheads Sample Movin’ by Brass Construction With Got Myself Together

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Taking disco and sampling it into house music in the 90s was a regular thing. It happened over and over again and I’m so happy that that era happened because two of my favorite styles of music had blended together to become an awesome style – disco house! Disco and House rule! Anyway this is a great example of that style. Take a Chicago house master like Kenny Dope and add a famous disco song from the 70s by Brass Construction, shake it up and end up with a classic 90s club hit by The Bucketheads!

Got Myself Together was the second hit off of The Bucketheads one and only awesome album All In The Mind didn’t become as big a hit as The Bomb was but it’s just as good if not better than The Bomb. I’m sure everyone remember The Bomb with the classic line “These Sounds Fall Into My Mind”? Then you will for sure remember The Bucketheads. The album All In The Mind even contained a 15 minute version of The Bomb for non stop beats. It’s a classic track now 15 years strong! Phew those were good times in the 90s! Weren’t they? All In The Mind is chock full of tracks utilizing samples from bands such as Chicago, Level 42, Atmosfear and Linda Clifford. Boy if you love music that is made up of samples then this album needs to be in your collection!

It was also so unique to discover a Latin/jazz version of Movin’ called Movin’ On by Ray Camacho of the Ray Camacho Band. All I have to say is that the 70s rules when it comes to music! Loads of cool hip styles were running all over. Kind of like the 90s and what’s starting to happen now again! Yay! Keep em comin’!

  3. Through The Night (The Swiss Menergy Remix) by Grum

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

The Swiss Menergy Remix? Are they hinting at Patrick Cowley? Sounds like! The remix to Through The Night with the really funny video is definitely an homage to the 80s high energy disco sound that Patrick Cowley was known for. His trademark sound has been updated and remixed Through The Night the cool 80s flavored artist Grum by The Swiss. It’s definitely a winning remix. Patrick Cowley was known for working and producing folks like Sylvester and DJing at legendary gay clubs in San Francisco and one listen to The Swiss Menergy Remix of Through The Night will take you back to the 80s clubs. It’s such a great combo here Grum who I’m totally digging lately and The Swiss with Bubble Bath fame are a winning combo. There are certainly several other remixes in the Through The Night remix package but The Swiss Menergy Remix is the one remix that gets my vote! Although the Bit Funk Remix is quite cool too. Through the Night is off of the Grum album Heartbeats. Check out Menergy too from Patrick Cowley below. All recommended.

  4. Every Day Is Halloween (Retro Electro Remix) by Ministry

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

If you grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 80s and you listened to Live 105 and especially Steve Masters on Live 105 then you will surely remember Everyday Is Halloween by Ministry. Not the Ministry that is known for Jesus Built My Hotrod and NWO from the 90s but the Ministry that is known for songs like Work For Love, Effigy and I Wanted To Tell Her! The more synthy, dance pop cuts that were forced onto Ministry by Arista Records to produce under contract. Well I’m glad they were forced into it because if not then we wouldn’t have them. The pre industrial cuts Ministry did were pretty classic at least to me but unfortunately that was not what Ministry wanted to do. Right after they released their one and only album under contract to Arista Records, With Sympathy (everyone should have this in their music collection btw as I think it’s a masterpiece) they went right into industrial dance territory, EBM which later became their hard core speed metal grunge industrial aggro sound that they became mostly known for. They released Every Day Is Halloween under contract to Wax Trax Records. This is the true Ministry sound. I love their sound and style here with cuts like Every Day Is Halloween, All Day, Cold Life and more. True EBM, Industrial dance classics or whatever you want to call it. Even bordering on goth! Evidenced on the Greatest 12 Inches from the Wax Trax label. So being a big fan of Everyday Is Halloween I had to pick up the greatest hits disc called Every Day Is Halloween: The Greatest Tricks.

Ok this is kind of cheezy although I do like the beats to this remix of Every Day Is Halloween but its sounding like it’s re-recorded so the vocals sound completely different than the original. I have a feeling for this greatest hits collection they couldn’t get the rights to or couldn’t afford the rights so they re-recorded it which cost them much less. Well it’s fine. It’s almost like a cover with an updated remixed sound. I dig it! The rest of the album though, hmm. You be the judge. Every Day Is Halloween: The Greatest Tricks even has a death metal version too. Not my cup of tea. Sorry! There are plenty of remakes or covers on the album too including a cover of the Amy Winehouse classic Rehab. Ok? What next! The Theme to A Summers Place?

  5. Liberating Soul (FM Attack remix) by Tesla Boy

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Tesla Boy is your favorite new 80s band from today! Their music sounds like it comes from the 80s but with very modern production values you know made for today. If you are at all into anything 80s inspired including synth pop dance, italo-disco, 80s disco dance then Tesla Boy is your ticket to great new music discovery! Even their name is very 80s sounding! Remember the song Tesla Girls by OMD? Ok I wont mention the hideous 80s metal band Tesla (oops I just did) but you get the point!

The Tesla Boy album Modern Thrills kicks the 80s sound right off with an excellent synth classic song called Electric Lady. Then it gets better and better with cuts like Synthetic Prince, Minsk-2, Dark Street, Fire and Thinking Of You so I highly recommend you check Modern Thrills out. Liberating Soul is the first single off of Tesla Boy’s Modern Thrills album. It’s fun synth, pop classicness! Great 80s sounding vocals even.I can’t pinpoint which 80s synth pop band they sound like but they really do. Maybe you know? The remix for Liberating Soul by FM Attack adds a certain, laidback spaceyness to it with the trademark spacey FM Attack sound. Being a big fan of FM Attack I always seek out new remixes they do. I especially love the remix they did for the Edwin Van Cleef song Overtaken. If you haven’t heard of it check it out here.

  6. Xlover Covers Prince With Darling Nikki!

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

A sexy sleazed up electro synth version of Prince’s sexy, orgasmic ballad from Purple Rain? Yes that’s what Xlover have done to remake this classic Prince song from the cool soundtrack to the film Purple Rain. Ok the singing is a bit off but hey it’s a fun project off of the oh so cool International Deejay Gigolo Records from Berlin, DJ Hell’s label with the Amanda Lepore logo. Ok that’s a bit of old news but I’ve been a big fan of International Deejay Gigolo Records. Just recently they released CD Twelve from the long running series of cool electro, dance, punk, new wave, synth based tracks from the label. This collection of songs certainly recommended if you are into this type of music as it contains cool remixes of songs including A Fifth Of Beethoven (Soulwax Remix) by Walter Murphy. Yes the classic disco track from Saturday Night Fever and other remixes like Peaches Lose You remixed by DJ Hell.

Anyway back to Xlover and Darling Nikki … Darling Nikki is off of the Xlover album Pleasure & Romance and the album is chock full of sleazy, sexy dark electro vox cuts. Check out more Xlover cuts here.

  7. Shirley Bassey Covers Grace Jones With Slave To The Rhythm (The Glimmer Twins Remix)

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I previously wrote about a Grace Jones Slave To The Rhythm sample by Magnum 38 but wanted to write again because theirs this great cover by Dame Shirley Bassey. Most of you will probably remember Shirley Bassey from the excellent collaboration she did with the Propellerheads with History Repeating back in the 90s. A complete contrasting track off of the rest of Decksandrumsandrockandroll by Propellerheads. But in reality you should get to know Shirley Bassey because she has some really cool music. I suppose the collaboration she did with the Propellerheads was a complete fit since she did the James Bond soundtrack themes but this Grace Jones remake is right on. Especially this Glimmer Twins remix as it has a very late 80s dance electronic beat sound. I’m sure you’ll recognize it once you hear it.

Ok we’re covering a lot of ground here. The Glimmer Twins are actually The Glimmers. The Glimmers were originally The Glimmer Twins but they were forced to change their name by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards because The Glimmer Twins was a project of theirs and they own the name or something so the big man won here and they were forced to become The Glimmers!

Anyway if you don’t know about Shirley Bassey check her music out. I think her voice and her music lends to remixes very well as evidenced in History Repeating and her own Greatest Hits Remixes album from about 10 years ago so I can certainly wish to hear more remixes of her tracks in the near future. In the meantime checkout both Grace Jones and Shirley Bassey doing Slave To The Rhythm at the links below.

  8. Don’t Cry Tonight (12” Version) by Savage

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Don’t Cry Tonight is the forgotten 80s guilty pleasure that I recently discovered again after checking out Back To Mine by Pet Shop Boys compilation see image below. If you haven’t heard this double album by Pet Shop Boys from the Back To Mine series you need to hear it now. It’s got all great classic tracks inspired by the boys from Pet Shop Boys. One disc of tracks by Neil and other disc of track by Chris. Don’t Cry Tonight is off of Chris’s disc. Since then I have not been able to stop listening to Don’t Cry Tonight by Savage. The song originally was released in 1983 and was one of those tracks that kick started the Italo-Disco sound that I have come to love since then. Ok I’ve fallen out of love then have come back to love again as the sound is pretty original. Don’t Cry Tonight sounds like the soundtrack to one of those 80s B movies about space and aliens taking over earth or could even be the soundtrack to Blade Runner or other similar type films. It’s got a very futuristic sound but not really upbeat either as it’s mellow, pretty laidback, very synthy and when you listen to it you can imagine driving through dark tunnels. Love it! It’s the perfect track to listen to at night when everyone is asleep and you can’t and are driving through lone streets. Beautiful and melancholy vocals by Roberto Zanetti.

Don’t Cry Tonight is on the album Tonight from 1984 but unavailable for download anywhere. iTunes does have a Greatest Hits album from 1994 which includes several 1994 remixes of Don’t Cry Tonight which don’t come close to the original whatsoever. There is one remix which I have below also called Grand Mix. Check it out it sounds like you are listening to a Milli Vanilli song with the Don’t Cry Tonight lyrics. Fun but not that great of a remix. The Greatest Hits album does contain the song Only You also some remakes by Depeche Mode Strangelove and I Just Died In Your Arms by Cutting Crew.

    Enjoy both below.

  9. Stylophonic Samples Della Reese With If Everybody In The World Loved Everybody In The World!

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Hey this is one of my favorite tracks from the 2000′s! It’s actually a midtempo, laidback vocal sampled electronic track from Stylophonic out of Italy. Not heard of it? Well this track If Everybody In The World Loved Everybody In The World samples the amazing Della Reese from her song Everybody In The World. The original is pretty darn cool, a political song that deserves to be listened to if you haven’t already and are into anything 60s, jazz, soul or R&B. Della’s version came out in 1969 from the album Black Is Beautiful a pretty darn amazing album. The Stylophonic sampled version out in 2002, almost 10 years now but still sounds fresh. It’s from the very underrated electronic album Man Music Technology. If you haven’t heard of this album it’s certainly worth it as there are some truly original cuts on here that deserve to be played. Key cuts from Man Music Technology are Soulreply, All Nite Long, Way Of Life (Featuring  Shock G & Humpty Hump) and Bizarre Mind.

  10. CFCF Covers Big Love by Fleetwood Mac

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I first heard of CFCF with a couple of remixes he did for Sally Shapiro. Love In July and Time To Let Me Go are remixes in the style of downtempo with very disco disco flavored electronic dance that I’ve been digging so was eager to check out the CFCF album Continent where Big Love comes from. I was surprised to hear Big Love as it’s my favorite cut from Continent. And to my surprise after listening to it several times that I kept thinking it was a cover. And sure enough it’s a Fleetwood Mac cover from the 80s.

Big Love was a pretty big hit for Fleetwood Mac and it’s your typical dance/pop song very much in line of the 80s sounding tracks. Nothing special now but still worth checking out to compare both the CFCF version of Big Love and the Fleetwood Mac version.I have had the CFCF version of Big Love on repeat lately and it’s certainly ended up on several of my playlists that I take with me on my iPhone and iPod. It’s one of those tracks that you can listen to in the background and as well listen to while having a little get together where you want some energy in your music and not get stuck to the chill out stuff that’s typical. Big Love by CFCF is off of his album Continent and Big Love by Fleetwood Mac is off of their Tango In The Night album from 1987. Check them out below.

  11. Gigi D’Agostino Covers Jacno’s Rectangle

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Rectangle is one of the fun, poppy tracks from the late 90s by Gigi D’Agostino. Off of his album Lamour Toujours which is full of those late 90s early 2000s dance cuts.  Little did I know Rectangle was a cover though until I heard the Jacno version back in 2001 or so. I had not heard of Jacno but luckily I was happy enough to discover it. It’s always cool to compare the remake that you thought was the original to the actual original version which was the case here.

I don’t really know much about Jacno but this is one of those rare track that every electronic music enthusiast should know about. Unfortunately Jacno had a very short life. He died of cancer last year. He was only 52. Luckily we have his hits to remember him by including this one by Gigi D’Agostino.

  13. London In The Rain by Variety Lab Samples Blossom Dearie

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Boy this was a great find. It’s been a while since I first heard it. Going on 10 years now I first heard it on a Hotel Costes Quatre CD and immediately I wanted to know where that sample came from. To my surprise it’s from this beautiful Blossom Dearie recoring called I Like London In The Rain. The marriage of downtempo/chillout electronic music and old jazz recordings is one of my favorite subgenres of music and I enjoy it very much. This track by Variety Lab is one of the finest examples of taking an old jazz song and sampling it and making a totally unique track. If I had to put a top then list of jazz samples London In The Rain by Variety Lab would be in that list and way up top.

The original I Like London In The Rain song is off of Blossom Dearie’s album That’s Just The Way I Want To Be and London In The Rain is off of the Variety Lab CD Providence.

  14. N-Joi Sample Gwen Guthrie’s Peanut Butter On Anthem

“I’m In Love With You, Want You To Love Me Too” is the famous line from Peanut Butter by Gwen Guthrie which is sampled in this most famous early house track by N-Joi. Anthem came out in 1991 to blow up everywhere and I was one of the first to get addicted to that famous line sung by Gwen Guthrie. Boy I sure didn’t know at the time that it was a sample being used in that track but later when I found out about it was like I like both tracks. Gwen Guthrie’s 80s sounding funk/hi-nrg style dance sound and of course the house classic by N-Joi. Peanut Butter is off of Gwen Guthrie’s album Portrait. 20. Work For Love (Extended Version) by Ministry – The Best Song Never Remade!

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

One of my favorite songs ever from the 1980s is Ministry’s classic new wave synth pop track Work For Love. Gosh the direction they went is completely mind boggling but whatever. I didn’t at all mind them when they went in the industrial direction in the late 80s but after that it was complete punk/speed metal chaos craziness that I didn’t enjoy as much. The album that put them on the map for me is With Sympathy a classic 80s synth pop new wave dance album which includes this song Work For Love and of course Effigy (I’m Not An).

I would love to see one day a great reinterpretation or remix or even a new track that samples this classic 80s cut. Recently Work For Love (Dub Version) was featured on Fabric 43 – the mix CD by Metro Area which was good to hear just after Share The Night (Breakdown Mix) by World Premiere and before Move To The Groove (Instrumental) by Disco Four. It was an awesome mix by Metro Area that I highly recommend and Ministry fit perfectly in the mix. Below is the Extended Version of Work For Love. Those of you that don’t know Ministry’s dance stuff you’ll surely by caught off guard because it’s nothing like really late 80s early to mid 90s stuff they released on Sire/Reprise and Warners label. With Sympathy was released by Arista Records! Enjoy!

The samples come back in during the extension of the track but basically DJ Sneak has used it to get Baby Steps off the ground. This is taken from her Sex Dreams And Denim Jeans CD that also includes Pop The Glock, Add SUV, MCs Can Kiss and a bunch of other little goodies. But what’s happend? I thought she going to be the next Ke$ha??? Oh well we can just enjoy her cuts more underground.

Really digging this track Dancing In Val D’Isere 1970 by Sare Havlicek. In fact the whole album, Toscana Nights is quite amazing if you are at all into spacey disco bordering italo and the cool synth sound from the late 70s and 80s! I have not heard of Sare Havlicek prior to just purchasing his album Toscana Nights on a fluke but I’m so glad I did it because this is one of those great albums you will play over and over again. If you are at all into Bottin or the French disco band Space then this is your cup of tea! Enjoy!

  25. Comment Te Dire Adieu (Beach House Mix) by Blank & Jones

This is a fun Latinized instrumental remake of the Francoise Hardy classic song Comment Te Dire Adieu by Blank & Jones. No vocals here just all instrumental music with a very chill, sexy downtempo groove. The remix is called Beach House Mix so you can just picture yourself chilling poolside or at the beach with a cocktail and with the smooth beats of this track. It’s a fun remake and certainly one of many for this very popular classic Francoise Hardy cut. This remix is off of the Blank & Jones album Relax: Edition Five Enjoy and let me know what you think of this compared to the original. Both versions below.
