  1. Matt Helders Ft. Nesreen Shah Cover Dreamer by Livin’ Joy

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This song was such a big deal for me back in the mid 90s that I overplayed it. It was a big pop dance crossover hit from Italy. Later I also discovered a Rollo remix and started playing that version as well. So it has a special place for me as it was def one of the bigger dance pop tunes that came out in the 90s. I was quick to want to check out when I heard about a remake of it. Sure to my surprise it’s a pretty darn cool version by Matt Helders featuring Nesreen Shah. Matt Helders is the drummer from the Arctic Monkeys and I have not idea who Nesreen Shah is but they have certainly updated a club classic 90s dance pop song and made it quite the energetic drummified bouncy update. I like it. What do you think? The track is from Ministry Of Sounds Uncovered CD which is a real cool collection of covers remakes etc. Well worth it to own!

  2. White Knight Two by Surkin

If there’s any track that takes me back to the heyday of the rave techno scene this has got to be it. This piece of music is darn amazing! Totally energetic and has that updated sound from the scene in the early 90s. I have several other tracks from Surkin but I’m still really into this one track. Surkin is Benoit Heitz. Born in the South Of France now residing in Paris. This is off of Surkin’s Next Of Kin EP.

  3. Visti & Meyland Sample Ora Dell Graham With Yes Maam!

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I’ve been listening to Visti & Meyland’s Yes Maam for a couple of years now. I discovered it on a compilation called Rasa Exotica 3. Didn’t really think much about it when I first started listening to this song but later it really grew on me. I was really interested in finding out where the sample comes from and I was definitely going to find out. Searching around online I found out that Trentemoller had also done a remix of Yes Maam which gives it the more electro club groove to it. The original is more chill with a beat. So I finally found out after researching online that Yes Maam incorporates a sample from Ora Dell Graham’s Little Girl, Little Girl. I was able to find the album that it came off of as well. The sample is pretty short – about 25 seconds in all that’s the entire length of the song on the compilation album called Afro-American Blues and Game Songs.

This isn’t the first time that an electronic band or musician has sampled old blues recordings. The compilation Afro-American Blues and Game Songs contains songs by Vera Hall as well. If you remember Vera Hall or if you don’t know of her music then you’ll probably recognize her voice on Moby’s very successful album Play with the song Natural Blues. Her song was called Troubled So Hard and Moby had sampled Vera Hall’s recording and made it into a very popular downtempo electronic beat. Love that song and I’m still very happy to hear of great sampling jobs happening with electronic musicians.

The album Visti & Meyland also contains a cover of Nightclubbing the Iggy Pop and Grace Jones song which I think is pretty cool and another hit track called Stars.

Going back to Yes Maam, I have heard of a version of Yes Maam with a rap thrown in it and I think that version sucks! Please, please don’t throw a Goddamn rap in every damn song. I hate the version of this with the rap it makes it too poppy and gives it a mass produced pop song quality and takes away from the Ora Dell Graham sample. It kind of puts it down because the rap is so damn huge and raw the female voice much more gentle so it comes off pretty bad. Stay away from the rap version of Yes Maam and go right to the original version. And the remix by Tretemoller is great too. Enjoy!

  4. Lily Allen Covers Mr. Blue Sky by ELO (Electric Light Orchestra)

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Ran across this awesome compilation series from France called La Musique De Paris Derniere. I believe these are compilations from a French TV show but I would need to do some research first to be correct. These compilations contain remakes, remixes of well known songs. Including this unreleased version of a very bouncy, poppy Lily Allen remake of the ELO classic Mr. Blue Sky. It’s fun and the recording is in her typical style. So if you’re a fan of Lily Allen then this is right up your alley. Check them both out below. And do check out the series as there are 7 discs now and all are fun. I love them. There remakes of so many songs you are familiar with I’m sure. Including:

    Beat Goes On
    Light My Fire
    I Can’t Get No Satisfaction
    Dancing Queen
    Happy Together
Can’t Take My Eyes Off You
    Ashes To Ashes
    What A Wonderful World
    Space Oddity
    The Girl From Ipanema
    Like A Virgin
    Highway To Hell
    Walk On By
    Proud Mary
    Hotel California
    Billie Jean
    Da Ya Think I’m Sexy
    Tainted Love

And many, many more remakes by lesser known acts, new bands old ones etc. So I highly recommend these compilations click the album artwork below to download more tracks from this great series called La Musique De Paris Derniere.

  5. State Farm (Madhouse Mix) by Yaz

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

One of the best remixes ever!!!!!!!!!! And this one goes back to 1991 and it still sounds fresh today. Remixed by Dakeyne! Whatever happened to Dakeyne??? So full of energy with a full on vocal remix from Alison Moyet belting out in her trademark singing style. It’s awesome. Almost as classic as Situation the original version. For the longest time I only had the edit version of this awesome remix. Leaving stupid decisions to record execs is pretty bad. They had this edit version on a 1991 Situation remix single and I didn’t know why they had just released the single with a edited version. It was quite dumb for Warners to do that. Finally it’s given the full release treatment it deserves. And as I mentioned earlier it’s sounding as fresh as it did back in 1991. This comes off of Yaz’s Reconnected EP that came out last year. Or wait late 2008! This is worth it if you are a fan of Yaz, Alison Moyet, 80s music, dance music and or remixes. Go get it now!

This is complete 360 and I love it. Take a nu jazz track like Behind The Wind and give it the complete remix treatment and what you get this full on clubbing track like the Heavygrinder Remix. The original track by Jabberloop is an upbeat jazzin lounge cut but once you check out the two versions you’ll see what I’m talking about. The original Behind The Wind is from the Jabberloop album Infinite Works but the Heavygrinder Remix is off of OOParts album. Both cool and worth owning if you like your music remixed and or made different.

A little about Jabberloop: They are a Japanese club jazz band who’s been releasing music since 2004. Check them out and you’ll dig their stuff.

Once again a cool band like The Glimmers have to change their name because of some old fogies like Mick Jagger and Keith Richards used to use The Glimmer Twins. Whatever!!! I like the Glimmers much better anyway. And this track Galactic Prism is rocking! Love, absolutely love this track since it has a very 80s feel to it but it’s totally now. It’s from The Glimmers album The Glimmers Are Gee Gee Fazzi which is aslo awesome and this track is one of the standout cuts but there’s more more groovy goodies on there! With elements of disco, electro, punk, Latin and their quirky style of production this makes for an awesome release. Enjoy and support The Glimmers and buy their album The Glimmers Are Gee Gee Fazzi! You wont be disappointed!

Give it 2 Me is a pretty darn good song on Madonna’s Hard Candy album. This version of Give It 2 Me is a remix off of the CD single for Give It 2 me and it’s one of the better remixes on the disc. It’s the Eddie Amador House Lovers mix. The CD single contains lots of choices but among all the talent that have been hired to remix this track only one has actually been able to create something original so I was a bit disappointed with the whole collection and unfortunately failed to even listen to the Eddie Amador House Lovers Mix. Just earlier today I was a clothing store and I heard this version playing loudly on the system and quickly thought to come back and check out the collection and sure enough they were playing this version. So at least the collection is worth it for this version. Check out both the original and the remix of Give It 2 Me by Madonna below. Whatcha think?

    Bossasonic-Club-Life

This is fun sunny version of Wham!s Club Tropicana from the little known band Bossasonic. Very island/Brazil inspired. Whereas the Wham! version was also island inspired it has that classic 80s sound to it. This version by Bossasonic definitely has the jazz thing going. I can see this version played at a fun cocktail club/theater as it has that vibe going. Check them out both. I love both and I can listen to them over and over again. The song is from the Bossasonic album Club Life. Check out Bossasonic on Myspace.

Make sure you listen for the ocean waves while listening to the Bossasonic version. And be sure you catch the Wham! video for Club Tropicana.

    Frankmusick-Naked

Love this song When You’re Around by Frankmusik. It’s a cover of the Stranglers new wave punk classic Golden Brown. I love that Frankmusik has taken it and given it a little electro life. Increasing the bpm and making it a bit frenetic which perfectly works. The original by the Stranglers is pretty darn good and a classic now but I love a fresh take on a classic track and Frankmusik has done that perfectly. What do you think?

When You’re Around is from the album Complete Me on Island Records. It’s available for download from online retailers like Amazon.com or iTunes. Check it out as it’s a fun album. Lots of electro pop with a big hint to the 80s.

This video rocks …. check it out below!

  12. Stuck On Repeat (Fake Blood Remix) by Little Boots

    Arecibo-Little-Boots

    little-boots-picture

Little Boots aka Victoria Hesketh used to be lead singer of the UK band Dead Disco. This is a pretty darn good dance pop track by Little Boots. You can tell the production is totally leaning towards the electronic dance genre rather than the pop genre and you can also tell that it’s a UK production not the USA! Very obvious. The Fake Blood Remix is pretty darn good. It’s repetetive but in a very good way. The original Stuck On Repeat sounds a little on the minimal old school sound but still very darn good but the Fake Blood Remix is pretty darn good! Very punk meets funk ala electro disco dance track. It’s got that late 70s early 80s feel to it too. This track is produced by Hot Chip and The Bird And The Bee.

    Yummy!

I’m really digging this. I love the synth bass line in the Human League awesome track Don’t You Want Me. So basically Spirit Catcher have taken that bass line and sampled it in this remix of the Scratch Massive track Shining In My Vein. This is actually quite nice. Scratch Massive are an electro act from Paris, France. Check it out and let me know what you think. The remix is taken from the “Underground Needs Your Money Baby” album.

  15. Ring My Bell (Miss X Remix) by Miss X

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Here’s a very popular 70s disco classic Ring My Bell by Anita Ward that’s been taken and given the upbeat deep bass treatment by Miss X. I don’t know much about this band and I certainly can’t find any info about them online. Their album is available as a download on Amazon, iTunes and eMusic which is where I downloaded.

I specifically downloaded the entire album because of this remake and have been enjoying the remainder of the tracks. It’s a great mix of electro pop tracks in the vein of 80s synth pop. Definitely in the vein of Richard X and similar artists. All fun but definitely the track that stands out for me is Ring My Bell. There are some really cute sounding beats on here as well. Some vocals and some instrumental cuts.

Check it out and download from eMusic. Link to sign up for free 25 downloads here. It’s worth it for sure.

Out of all the great disco singles I think Ring My Bell is certainly one of my all time favorites and I was very happy to hear this remix/remake by Miss X.

Here’s a really fun, upbeat and energetic remake, remix of this little known track called Beneath Me by Dancepig. This remix basically takes the beat from the track called No Coke by Dr. Alban and loops it around until you get the Tone Loc Wild Thing sample kick in. It’s quite fun and I actually love it and even more than the original version.

Check it out as I think you will like this. I love taking originals and totally screwing with the tracks and coming up with really unique remix. The remixes are from the EP/Single to Beneath Me from Dancepig.

  17. Radio (Shinichi Osawa Remix) by Felix da Housecat

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is one hell of a remix by Shinichi Osawa. WOW! I can’t say enough about this remix – it’s awesome! The original is a pretty slow track from the album Virgo Blaktro & the Movie Disco and the remix is off of the Radio single.

Prior to hearing this remix of Radio I had not heard of Shinichi Osawa. I love it and I’m curious to know what else he has done or remixed. He’s got a huge list of remixes for such artists as Boys Noize, Digitalism, Alex Gopher and Christopher Just. All roads lead me to Mondo Grosso though the Japanese electronic house/jazz act of the latter 90s early 2000s.

I’m definitely interested in exploring the Shinichi Osawa’s sound more though as I truly dig it. What do you think of the remix compared to the original?

  18. Cities In Dust (Radio Edit) by Junkie XL Featuring Lauren Rocket

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Here’s a great version of Cities In Dust by Junkie XL. I’ve always a big real big fan of the original by Siouxsie & The Banshees and it’s refreshing to see this update – it’s quite big sounding and upbeat and energetic. I even like the voice of Lauren Rocket here on this. I don’t know much about Lauren Rocket but I do know that she is in an LA punk band. Whatever she’s in I think the JXL version works. This is from the single release from Junkie XL with several great remixes and this one the radio edit is a good one to start out with. There are some even more energetic remixes on here but this brings back memories of the 80s.

Since I’ve loved the Extended Version by Siouxsie I think I’ve always wanted a pumped up electrofied version of this classic 80s song so this single really works for me. What do you think?

I love JXL and I think he does a pretty damn good job at remixing oldies and updating classics with his signature sound. Check out A Little Conversation (JXL Remix) by Elvis. You’ll see what I mean.

  19. Wild Thing (Peaches Extended Remix) by Tone-Loc

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Here’s a really fun remix of the classic 1980’s hip-hop song. Peaches has taken the song and added electro rock touches to it and also added her nasty vocals to it. I think it really works. The only prob I have with this recording is that there’s some really odd audio probs with it. I’ve downloaded the entire album Rmxxology both from Amazon MP3 and emusic and there seems to be some clipping. And it’s not only this recording it’s the entire album. Maybe the audio clipping is for effect? Anyone know?

It kind of spoils the music but the remix is still fun and I love both the original and the Peaches remix. Peaches rocks! Don’t you think so?

  20. Sweet Dreams by Señor Coconut

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Well the big hit Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This by Eurythmics will always go down in pop music history. It’s been remixed and covered countless number of times but I like this version because it just does not sound so much electronic or synth poppy as the original. It’s very loungy with the added Latin flavor that I’ve come to love from Señor Coconut. I think it’s great and it makes a great track to chill to. Don’t get me wrong, I do love the original and I love it alot but this completely different version is a nice change to the classic piece of music.

It’s def worth a listen. Check it out and let me know what you think.
