  1. Swimming Places (Sabaudia Gabin Remix) by Julien Jabre

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Swimming Places was a huge club hit back in 2005 for Julien Jabre. It’s the perfect club house cut with slight touches of early 70s disco sounds. It’s minimal but cool, it’s mellow but groovy it’s perfect. Plus it’s one of those tracks that goes on and on for quite a long time. The original clocks in at almost 11 minutes! It’s classic and it’s only 5+ years old. The single was released with several remixes which pretty darn good. There were remixes by Jerome Sydenham and Peter Heller which were good but did not compare to the masterful original. I loved it. It’s the perfect track to get you into and uplifting mood. It’s not too hard!

2 years later a new batch of remixes came out because the original Swimming Places by Julien Jabre was such a hit and this time I paid more attention because the Sabaudia Gabin Remix of Swimming Places was just as good if not better than the original! The original Swimming Places has a very island feel to it which should be mentioned but this remix by Sabaudia Gabin elevates the island feel. It’s slightly more upbeat than the original and adds a sort of island jazz house groove to it. It’s cool. Still not a hard dance club cut but it’s got quite a nice chill house groove to it!

    Enjoy both below!

  2. Camino Del Sol (Todd Terje Remix) by Antena

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I recently discovered this awesome track Camino Del Sol (Todd Terje Remix) by Antena and it has really grown on me. I’m speaking about the remix to Antena’s Camino Del Sol remixed by Todd Terje from a couple of years back. The original is from way back in 1982 that I only discovered after hearing the awesome Todd Terje Remix. Actually both the original and remix are pretty new to me but the remix is quite awesome. It’s got a very chill, flowy, summery, beachy vibe that you can put on and chill to with waves crashing into the beach and with warm summer sun rays hitting your face. That’s the kind of track this is. And with the Todd Terje remix he’s added his trademark very light nu disco vibe to it that I’m really loving. The original is more lo-fi Brazil island vibe but the remix rocks!

Now I’m really curious to search out and find out more about Antena. Interesting note is Isabelle Antena is one of the 3 members from Antena and I think the band is most likely named after her last name. Right? If you are at all a fan of island chill, Brazil jazz, downtempo then Antena is your cup of tea. It’s mine too and I just love this Todd Terje Remix.

The remix is off of the remix album called Version Speciales #1 of Antena songs and there are some ¬†awesome remixes by famous remixers and musicians. Other remixes of Antena songs on the remix collection are by bands Nouvelle Vague, Chromatics, Joakim, Phreek and Disco Devil! Worth owning if you don’t have it.

  3. Broke by Sneaky Fox Samples Groove Is In The Heart by Deee-Lite

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Here’s a fun bouncy track that does a great job at sampling Deee-Lite’s hit from the early 90s, Groove Is In The Heart. The track Broke basically uses a loop of the main beat/bassline from Groove Is In The Heart and adds some touches of Latin influenced beats and makes it into a cool fun lounge style upbeat cut. Sneaky Fox has other cool cuts that are certainly worth checking into when you have a chance. So once I heard this cut I’m sure more interested in what else they’ve released!

Love this reggaefied remake of the Curtis Mayfield classic Move On Up by The Dynamics. It’s a really nice remake from the band from France and once I heard it it was like this is nice and chill perfect for like background music for chill parties or to chill to in the background. The vocals are laidback and smooth and somewhat sexy. The song is from The Dynamics album Version Excursions which is an album of covers in this style which I highly recommend. Anyone into covers or reggae, soul, funk music should check out the album. Link to iTunes music store below as well.

  5. Moonbootica Cover House Of Pain’s Jump Around!

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is a pretty awesome electrofied remake of the House Of Pain hip hop classic from the early 90s! Dark, sleazy electro beats with robotic vox. It’s quite nice and I love it when they take such a classic track from a genre and remake the hell out of it which is what Moonbootica have done here. Good for them! I first heard of Moonbootica with a remix of Tessio the Luomo track from 2001 or so. Later they exploded with a remix of Mundian To Bach Ke the Punjabi MC bhangra hit. So they’ve been remixing for a while now and this track is certainly a solid remake. This remake goes back to 2007 so it’s already a bit old but still fresh sounding. As we approach the 20th anniversary of the House of Pain classic Jump Around this will make do for us as it’s certainly the future in sound.

If you like their sound you should also check out their release Men Of The Future. It’s quite a nice electro/disco cut and certainly worth hearing it on repeat. It’s quite the sexy, late night groove.

Totally totally wicked track called Space Warrior that I stumbled onto after just listening to Fabriclive 41 the Simian Mobile Disco mix from a couple of years back. This track is just the wickedest, wildest recording ever. Takes me back to early 90s and then throws me back today now. I want to hear more from these guys but not much more is available. 7. Pennies From Heaven (Count De Money Remix) by Billie Holiday

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Billie Holiday’s version of Pennies From Heaven is my favorite compared to everyone else that’s done it. It’s so beautiful, calm mellow somewhat moody but very beautiful. When I heard of this remix from the Remixed and Reimagined CD I was quick to snatch it right up! I love remixes (if you haven’t noticed already) and will buy any remix of an existing song including the oldies. I was quite surprised at how good the Count De Money Remix is of Pennies From Heaven. I just wished it was longer. It almost feels or sounds like it starts in the middle. Those record execs and their stupid decisions to do such a thing. Give me the 12″ and day, longer versions pleeze! Either way though I shouldn’t complain because I can have my Billie Holiday songs remixed. The entire collection of Remixed and Reimagined is great. Worth it for anyone that likes remixes or is a Billie Holiday fan but not a purist. Came out in 2007.

I love it when musicians take a song that’s so well known from an era with such a specific genre and put a new spin on it. This is the fact with Dalminjo Featuring Anja Oyen Vister covering The Smiths classic There Is A Light That Never Goes Out. Dalminjo is known for jazzy housed up club and electronic music and he’s remade this very well known Smiths track and made it housed up clubby but nothing too obnoxious with the beats sort of laidback but you know midtempo. This is the remixed version below as the original version is pretty mellow minimal. Check it out here with the original Smiths version. I like it and I do like it that he’s used Anja Oyen Vister to record the vocals so hearing this with female vocals is a pretty cool thing. What do you think?

Disco will never go out of style! It’s here to stay forever and ever. That’s why musicians keep sampling famous tracks over and over again from the disco era! So Richard Dorfmeister (aka Kruder & Dorfmeister) and Madrid De Los Austrias have done an excellent sampling job on their track Boogie No More sampling the classic disco song Boogie Oogie Oogie by A Taste Of Honey. It’s perfect here and the Reverso 68 Remix is just awesome! The single also includes a Kraak & Smaak remix which is also pretty darn good. The Kraak & Smaak remix is a little more on the big beat side which makes both remixes completely different.

  10. Get Innocuous! by LCD Soundsystem Samples The Robots by Kraftwerk

    lcd_soundsystem_sound_of_silverlcd_soundsystem-james-murphy

I really do like this. Although I’ve been a pretty darn long time fan of Kraftwerk, James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem has taken the classic synth track from Germany’s Kraftwerk and sampled in his Gt Innocuous track. It’s a minimalist electro alternative cut that repeats the famous beats from Kraftwerk’s The Robots!

Get Innocuous is off of the Sound Of Silver album which has the hit track North American Scum a track that you’ve probably heard if you saw Step Brothers. Here’s the entire list of tracks from Sound Of Silver.

  11. Midsummer Night Blues by Waldeck

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

This is awesome … from the great electro swing revival/movement happening in Europe now comes a great track called Midsummer Night Blues by Waldeck. Midsummer Night Blues is off of his album Ballroom Stories. It’s an excellently made album utilizing sounds from the great swing and jazz era with many samples and of course mostly electronica and pop elements with updated production an Midsummer Night Blues samples elements of great Gershwin track Summertime sung by so many great folks. The version I have below is the version by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. I felt that the music behind their version was the closest to the sampled sound from the Waldeck samples.

I could be wrong but it felt like it’s the right version.

  12. I Want Your Love (Danny Krivit Original Re-Edit) by Jody Watley

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Gosh? Whatever happened to Jody Watley? Well she’s still around and she’s done this awesome remake of the Chic disco classic. I think this is quite the remake – it’s excellent. It’s so good that it’s been on repeat for a while now. I’ve read that Nile Rodgers is actually done the guitar on this Jody Watley version of the Chich masterpiece from the 70s. The Jody Watley single contains so many remixes but my favorite is the Danny Krivit Original Re-Edit as it’s perfect to chill to it. It’s very similar to the Chic classic – it’s a laidback midtempo track. Here’s a list of the versions available from the Jody Watley release.

    Jody_Watley_I_Want_Your_Love

One listen to both versions and you’ll notice that it’s very similar except for the production sounds more current and the vocals are of course Jody Watley versus the Chic girls. The original comes off of the album C’est Chic.

  13. Europa And The Pirate Twins by Sondre Lerche

I love the original of Europa And The Pirate Twins by Thomas Dolby. Even more than his bigger hit She Blinded Me With Science which as a kid I despised. It absolutely drove me crazy! But Europa And The Pirate Twins was awesome. Perfect synth Euro pop!

The original Europa And The Pirate Twins is off of the album The Golden Age Of Wireless album that also included the song She Blinded Me With Science. An awesome 80s classic worth owning if you don’t.

I do like this version by Sondre Lerche. It’s updated nicely but still doesn’t stand up to the original by Thomas Dolby. What do you think?

Sorry I do love MSTRKRFT but I hate this remix. For once I have to revert back to the original of version of a track and this is when I have to do it. This remix just does not go anywhere. What do you think? I think it sucks! I think The Crystal Method should have not even approved this remix. What were they thinking? This remix is on the 10th year anniversary of their Vegas CD and it’s quite lame. Lame Lame Lame. Awful. I’ll stick to the original on this one. Too bad though as it would have been great to hear some updated cut of this awesome track. No good to mix big beat with the sounds of electro. Hmm.

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

If there ever was a remix contest I would put this remix by Trentemoller of the Robyn track Konichiwa Bitches at the very top. It’s excellent and it’s what a remix is all about. The original is cool but nothing to write home about – makes sense as it didn’t go anywhere on the charts when it was originally released so this Trentemoller remix puts new life into the song. I could see or hear this in the best clubs and it would perfect in a mix and to dance to. It’s got lots of hard bass and it definitely has the hard sleazy edge that Robyn has been pushing lately.

  16. It’s Not Over Yet by Klaxons

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I love this … I love the fact that a punk/rock/dance band has taken a electronic/dance song from the 90s and totally made it their own. It’s perfection. I remember listening to Not Over Yet by Grace back in the mid 90′s over and over again. The various remixes by BT, Danny Tenaglia, Dancing Divas and etc. This track was released off of Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto label – later on Reprise here in the states. And I remember listening to the many reincarnations of Not Over Yet – the tranced up versions that came out in 1999 as Planet Perfecto Presents Grace. Those were quite nice.

But this Klaxons version is perfect if not excellent. I love the guitars and the vocals – they are all perfectly blended together. Don’t you think? Check out the video as well.

  17. The Tango I Saved for You (from the film Gaily, Gaily) (Zeb’s The Tango I Stole From You Remix) by Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra/Henry Mancini

This is such a beautiful piece of music as I love both the original by Henri Mancini and the remix by Zeb. It’s from a film that I have not seen called Gaily, Gaily but anything with Henry Mancini’s music is worth at least checking out. Well the music that is.

Zeb has added the jazzy downtempo touch to the original and spiced it up a little but still the original can be heard in the new remix.

This remix is off of the album Cinematic: Classic Film Music Remixed – and contains awesome chill, jazzy, moody downtempo cuts. I love the whole disc. The oddest cut off the disc is an updated remix of a track from the Carrie soundtrack. Boy that sure is creepy! But the disc is definitely worth owning for the rest of the cuts for sure.

  18. Miss Broadway by Glass Candy

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Here’s a toned down synth remake of Paris, France’s Belle Epoque’s Miss Broadway. Miss Broadway was Belle Epoque’s second hit in the 70s and the only hit in the US. Glass Candy has remade the track and contributed to the After Dark compilation for the Italians Do It Better! label. It’s a really fun version but quite chill and mellow compared to the original by Belle Epoque.

I do enjoy Glass Candy’s music alot and their album Beat Box which also contains a cover of the Krafwerk classic Computer Love. Most of their music is pretty toned down and mellow – nothing to really get the party started. Mostly for winding down which is good.

The After Dark compilation includes a bunch of great tracks in the synth electronic style including a cover of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life which is one of my all time favorite disco songs.

  19. Rock Your Body by Shawn Lee & The Ping Pong Orchestra

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Justin Timberlake’s Rock Your Body is a fun disco inspired pop track and was a huge hit for him. But when Shawn Lee & The Ping Pong Orchestra remade it they changed the sound and made it mostly instrumental. It still sounds like Rock Your Body but now they’ve added a loungy, jazzy touch to it with a Latin inspired big band groove. You can still hear that the 70s sound is still there.

What Shawn Lee & The Ping Pong Orchestra has done with all the tracks on Hits The Hits is taken all popular tracks by pop artists and made it all something you can play in the background without and of the lyrics getting in the way too much. It’s the perfect background music if you want the hits but you don’t want the lyrics.

It’s a great collection and it’s similar to other collections like the popular Nouvelle Vague series of 80s new wave tracks remade jazzy and loungy. Shawn Lee & The Ping Pong Orchestra’s Hits The Hits is a fun, hip lively collection of pop tracks and Rock Your Body is one of the better cuts on the disc.

Check it out and let me know what you think of this version compared to Timberlake’s version.

  20. Beggin (Pilooski Remix) by Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Ok so now we have Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons getting into the remix game. This one is remixed by Pilooski from France. And you know what I do like it. I love this and I loved hearing it all over the radio in France while I was visiting in December. It’s nice and energetic and it’s fun. The only thing is the version I kept hearing on the radio in France had a rap in the track but I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Either way I now am anxious to know if they are going to do more remixes because I like what I hear here with this track. Perhaps they’ll do a remix of Can’t Take My Eyes Off You? Maybe not – the Pet Shop Boys did that already!

The music is still pretty much the same but as you are probably are aware there’s the added oomph factor to this remix and the the fact that they’ve kept the music pretty much the same it’s pretty amazing. Nice beats and perfect for party time! White boy soul music remixed.

I love it. What do you think? Do you like the original or the remix? I’d say the remix!

  21. My Moon My Man (Boys Noize Remix) by Feist

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Well this is some remix and I absolutely love this and I’m really glad that Boys Noize did this and included it on their album Oi Oi Oi. It’s been beefed up quite nicely by Boys Noize and made into something more accessible than the original flat sounding Feist track off of her The Reminder set. That’s the kind of stuff you hear on pop radio. I’m not sure if they played this on pop radio but it sounds like that it could be coming off radio speakers.

The build up is quite nice here and the addition of the robotic noises is perfect with the shoe and running sound effects in the background. I love the robotic vo repeating My Moon My Man. It makes the track more futuristic and electronic against Feist’s voice. Then the beats kick in and you have this great remix.

This is the type of remix that’s perfect for Destroy Rock And Roll – when the track is not what it used to be.
