Since Depeche Mode came out with an amazing collection of remixes called Depeche Mode – Remixes 2: 81-11 I just had to share another Depeche Mode cover here and figured this remake of People Are People by RuPaul for the Depeche Mode 80s classic that got me introduced to the band was the one to put up. People are People is one of the rare songs that still sounds good today. Although People Are People is one of their more poppier songs I still love it and always seek out any remixes or remakes of this song. Unfortunately though I have not heard of any official remixes from Depeche Mode themselves and it’s rarely covered too. I hope when Depeche Mode release Remixes 3 they will actually finally remix this song as it deserves it! Yes?

But then again there’s this pretty darn good club/house remake by RuPaul! RuPaul you say? Well I guess she’s been making music since the mid 90s! This came out in 2005 but I somehow missed it when it came out but later discovered it somehow when I was searching for People Are People. The People Are People (Giuseppe D’s Rutroactive Club Mix) by RuPaul even contains samples of the machine sound effects from the original Depeche Mode version of People Are People. So I give RuPaul some credit for doing this. The original Depeche Mode versions of People Are People is still very special place in my heart. I was a very young teen and discovered this greatest new band Depeche Mode that produced this awesome electronic/synth pop dance music and since then I’ve been hooked on to the sounds of Depeche Mode. But I’m always looking for new versions of old songs and this just does it for me. The original version of People Are People is available on People Are People the album from Depeche Mode and also on Some Great Reward as well as their countless Greatest Hits albums. RuPaul’s version is off of People Are People the single with countless remixes of People Are People, on RuPaul Red Hot and RuPaul ReWorked. Those of you that know anything about Mylo will know where the name of this website comes from. One of my favorite albums from the 2000′s and perhaps for the last 20 years is the album Destroy Rock And Roll byMylo. Destroy Rock And Roll was chock full of some of the best dance music around. Included excellent cuts like Destroy Rock And Roll, Drop The Pressure, Muscle Cars, Muscle Car Reform Reprise, In My Arms,Valley Of The Dolls, Paris Four Hundred, Otto’s Journey and more. The whole album was totally listenable and it still sounds fresh today. Well Mylo and his label Breastfed Records also released other artists likeLinus Loves, Radio Slave, Ran Shani and Flat Pack which released this just OK remake of a classic Guns N’ Roses classic songs Sweet Child O’ Mine by Flat Pack. I was very excited to hear this remake when it first came out in 2005 but it just wasn’t strong. Fortunately though it’s saved by the Mylo Remix which is here. What do you think? The Batman TV Theme is one of my all time favorite TV show themes and when I heard this remake by Lemon I was quickly hooked. Lemon have taken the original Batman TV theme and given it the electronic loungy treatment with a beefier bassier sound. It’s basically a remix here and I love it. If you like anything from bands like Ursula 1000, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Nicola Conte, Montefiori Cocktail, Chris Joss and Arling & Cameron you will dig their sound. And besides this is a really cool remake of a very kitschy, campy TV show theme but you have the kitsch and camp multiplied by 1000!

This Batman (Twist!) track is off of Lemon’s With A Twist album which is full of those loungy, go-go, 60s inspired fun, playful jazzy electronic tunes. One of my other favorites from With A Twist is Let’s Go! BIKINI. It’s one of those quirky, playful lo-fi electronic tracks very reminiscent to Perry & Kingsley with the added modern electronic beefiness of today. It’s so much fun! You also have a very fun sample from The Surfari’s Wipe Out track added in as a bonus! So you kind of get how fun this album is!

I decided to include David McCallum’s version below as the original and not the very original by Neal Hefti that was used on the TV show open for the Batman 1960s TV show. The original certainly has a lot of spy TV show music elements with the surf guitar music very much inspired by bands like The Ventures who covered the Batman TV show theme too and The Marketts who also did a cover of the Batman TV show theme. David McCallum’s version is off a very excellent CD series called Ultra Lounge and this version of Batman Theme is taken off the the amazing CD called Ultra-Lounge, Vol. 13: TV Town which is chock full of 60s TV show themes including The Munsters Theme, The Fugitive Theme, The Man From U.N.C.L.E./The Spies, The Mod Squad Theme and many more.

Swimming Places was a huge club hit back in 2005 for Julien Jabre. It’s the perfect club house cut with slight touches of early 70s disco sounds. It’s minimal but cool, it’s mellow but groovy it’s perfect. Plus it’s one of those tracks that goes on and on for quite a long time. The original clocks in at almost 11 minutes! It’s classic and it’s only 5+ years old. The single was released with several remixes which pretty darn good. There were remixes by Jerome Sydenham and Peter Heller which were good but did not compare to the masterful original. I loved it. It’s the perfect track to get you into and uplifting mood. It’s not too hard!

2 years later a new batch of remixes came out because the original Swimming Places by Julien Jabre was such a hit and this time I paid more attention because the Sabaudia Gabin Remix of Swimming Places was just as good if not better than the original! The original Swimming Places has a very island feel to it which should be mentioned but this remix by Sabaudia Gabin elevates the island feel. It’s slightly more upbeat than the original and adds a sort of island jazz house groove to it. It’s cool. Still not a hard dance club cut but it’s got quite a nice chill house groove to it!

A sexy sleazed up electro synth version of Prince’s sexy, orgasmic ballad from Purple Rain? Yes that’s what Xlover have done to remake this classic Prince song from the cool soundtrack to the film Purple Rain. Ok the singing is a bit off but hey it’s a fun project off of the oh so cool International Deejay Gigolo Records from Berlin, DJ Hell’s label with the Amanda Lepore logo. Ok that’s a bit of old news but I’ve been a big fan of International Deejay Gigolo Records. Just recently they released CD Twelve from the long running series of cool electro, dance, punk, new wave, synth based tracks from the label. This collection of songs certainly recommended if you are into this type of music as it contains cool remixes of songs including A Fifth Of Beethoven (Soulwax Remix) by Walter Murphy. Yes the classic disco track from Saturday Night Fever and other remixes like Peaches Lose You remixed by DJ Hell.

Anyway back to Xlover and Darling Nikki … Darling Nikki is off of the Xlover album Pleasure & Romance and the album is chock full of sleazy, sexy dark electro vox cuts. Check out more Xlover cuts here.

This is one of those rare Brit rock tracks that I really dig. It samples one of my favorite recordings of all time (Love Is Like A) Heatwave by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas. That song goes down as one of my all time top 25 tracks and Black And White Town does an awesome job of sampling the part of Heatwave best. I’m not much a fan of Doves but after I heard of this I was sure enough checking out more from the band. Enjoy both Doves and Martha & The Vandellas tracks below.

Kay Starr’s version of I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm is my favorite of that song. When I heard of the remix I even loved it more. It’s been given the upbeat treatment and it’s quite fun. The original is more mellow and slightly sexy with Kay’s beautiful vocals. The remixer on this track is STUHR who I know very little about but damn he did a great job at remixing this track and bringing it to the sound of now. Well the remix is about 5 years old now but still it sounds fresh and it’s one of my all time favorite Christmas songs remixed. From the album Christmas Remixed from Six Degrees Records. Volume 2 available as well and both albums are highly recommended if you are tired of the traditional Christmas music and want something a little more unique to impress your friends and family during the holidays.

Sampling Duran Duran on Baby Steps works excellently here. The opening beats to Duran Duran’s classic 80s new wave song Wild Boys is sampled on Baby Steps by DJ Sneak a full on club house track. The samples from D2s song starts Baby Steps off then ventures into a very 90s flavored house tune with full of energy. The samples come back in during the extension of the track but basically DJ Sneak has used it to get Baby Steps off the ground. This oversampled piece of music is a great obscure recording by the Michael Viner’s Incredible Bongo Band. It’s been used over and over again for one recording or another dating back to the 70s when it first came out. It’s a great funk underground classic that had a major resurgence back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The list of sampling is long vey long but until A Bit Patchy by Switch came out it was sampled in it’s bits and pieces. This A Bit Patchy incorporates the entire song into an original club tune using Apache cut by Michael Viner’s Incredible Bongo Band. The release has several remixes which you should check out here and one even from Eric Prydz but I still enjoy the original A Bit Patchy since it’s the closest to Apache but with the added club beat sounds of today. Actually this release is from 2005 but still sounds fresh now.
