I became a fan of Junkie XL when I heard this Slacker’s Tens Remix of Zerotonine from the Global Underground Cape Town 2 CD set by Dave Seaman. Well I guess I’m more into Slacker’s sound here than Junkie Xl but I certainly was seeking more from Junkie. His Big Sounds Of The Drags CD was not in heavy rotation for me back in ‘99/00 when it was big. I love this remix so much because of it’s intense progressive beats, somewhat tribal and robotic sounding at the same time. Very energetic. Makes it one of my favorite remixes ever and listening to it today still sounds fresh. What do you think? The original was more big beat/rock/electronic fusion sort of thing but this remix is just amazing!

One of the things I should point out here also is that this version that comes off of the Global Underground Cape Town/Dave Seaman CD set is much faster with the bpm’s than the original single that was available when released in 99. So I vote for this sped up version over the single version.

Slacker on the other hand have done remixes and released their own original material in the late 90s. Including remixes for Golden Girls, Bedrock, Ascension and The Locust.

Enjoy!

Ok I have to admit I was a fan of Children by Robert Miles when it first came out but it soon became overplayed and too pop cheesy. So I forgot about it real quick. 3 years later I noticed Tilt remaking the Robert Miles dream trance hit so I was curious to check it out. To my surprise it was pretty darn cool an awesome progressive trance release from one of my fave trance acts in the late 90s. Tilt was praised by many of the top DJs from the UK including Paul Oakenfold, Sasha and John Digweed.

In addition to Children, Tilt had several other trance releases including I Dream, Invisible, Butterfly, Rendevouz and What’s This. All some of my fave trance cuts back in the day and definitely worth checking out.

I still think this version of Children is the superior one over both. I especially love the cheesy Jason Voorhees/Friday The 13th sound effects added in this track. Ok it’s certainly cheesy but in a cool kind of way. Check out both below. The original Rober Miles version which became a worldwide hit and the the trance cover by Tilt in 1999. What do you think?

Well The Solar Twins that little known one hit wonder band from England that split up just after releasing one album did have a good enough song to have a post on DestroyRockAndRoll.com. Although I have to say this version of Rock The Casbah is pretty darn good. Don’t get me wrong The Clash are awesome at that song but this Solar Twins is a great electronica interpretation. Released back in 1999 on Madonna’s Maverick Records Solar Twins self titled album is chock full of electronica, downtempo, drum and bass and ambient styles and this Rock The Casbah and Swayambhu are the standout cuts on the album. I guess it was good enough to end up on the Brokedown Palace soundtrack that was also released also in 1999. The rest of the album is just mediocre.

Check out both versions of Rock The Casbah below.

This remix of Love Shack by The B-52’s goes back to 1999 – ten years ago and it’s a pretty darn awesome remix by DJ Tonka. Not sure really who this DJ Tonka is but if I ever play Love Shack by The B-52’s this is the version that I play. Love Shack is now 20 years old! Darn I feel old but this version is still pretty darn fresh. It’s much more upbeat and the bassline is what’s going on in this remix. The original Love Shack from Cosmic Thing was a pretty flat track so this kicks things way up! Check them both out below. The remix was part of a bigger package along with Hallucinating Pluto for The B-52’s Time Capsule Greatest Hits disc that was coming out shortly after. The remix CD Single included other great remixes as well. Check out the entire tracklist below.

The now classic Les Rhthmes Digitales album Darkdancer contains many samples and covers on several of the tracks. It’s a great album and I still come back to it and listen to several of the cuts on it. One of the better uses of samples music is this track From: Disco To: Disco which contains the sample of the song with the same name From: Disco To: Disco by Whirlpool Productions. I don’t know much about Whirlpool Productions but I know the original From: Disco To: Disco was released in 1996.

Check out the fun video for From: Disco To: Disco by Whirlpool Produtions:

Hey who doesn’t love the Labelle disco funk hit Lady Marmalade? It’s a pretty darn big hit from the disco era and it’s still pretty popular today. I love this remake though from Lords Of Acid. They have made it into a sleazy industrial electrofied version. A bit cheesy at some points when the moaning comes in (ok that’s signature Lords Of Acid) but the beats are pretty darn cool still. This remake is 10 years old … wow time flies but I think it’s still got legs. It doesn’t sound too dated.

What do you think?

Here enjoy Patti and Labelle sista’s doing Lady Marmalde. Then head below and download the two versions and compare. You’ll be blown away by the Lords Of Acid version!!

Taking old disco classics like this Geraldine Hunt classic from the late 80s and sampling and or remixing was a common thing in the 90s. This remix came out in 1999 almost 20 years after the original version was on the billboard hot dance club chart. It was on in 1980 in October and spent it there for 7 weeks.

I certainly do enjoy the original alot and disco even though is old still doesn’t sound tired. This remix though by Prince Quick is sounding quite nice but maybe a little tired. I’m still digging it though only and it’s certainly in Prince Quick’s typical style/sound.

Prince Quick has made a pretty nice update here even though this remix is 10 years old it’s moves. Don’t you think so?

I love this song by Vitamin C and I love the way the sample from The Magnificent Seven is used in the song. The singing is perfect one of the better Vitamin C songs and the beats. I like it when samples from original songs are used perfectly in newer songs and this actually really succeeds. I’m not sure about other Vitamin C songs as they tend to be pretty poppy but this song definitely has an edge to it especially since it’s utilizing the sample from The Clash.

Hey though Vitamin C aka Colleen Fitzpatrick is a pretty big star. She made her acting debut in the awesome John Waters film Hairspray. She played Amber Von Tussle. She did several movies after that but later she was in the band Eve’s Plumb. Remember them? The pop/punk band who were known for the Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons song December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night). Oh maybe we should blog about that song on Destroy Rock & Roll too.

This is such a classic track by Yaz and I really dig all the remixes that have surfaced of this track over the years. Brings back the great synth pop dance memories of the 80s. Well of course the original is still the best but the remixes are all really good too if not a little better than the original.

You have the 1991 single that has a great dubby/bassy remix by Youth. Then for the greatest hits package it was remixed by Club 69 which is actually not one of my favorite mixes of Situation. Then it was remixed for the Future Retro compilation by Richard X which is actually one of my favorites. It kept the original sounds as much as possible but Richard X increased the speed a bit so it’s quite nice and upbeat. Very electronic. Well the original was quite electronic which was perfect on it’s own but this Richard X version is something else.

The Club 69 version has been housed up too much and stripped away from the synth pop sound which turns me off. Don’t get me wrong I do love Club 69 and his music and remixes but this one is just not the strongest. Sounds a bit tired as well. It’s the usual Club 69 house sound that you’ve probably heard countless times.

The Don’t Go/Situation single from 1999 also contains the Richard Humpty Vission remix too but just was actually worse than the Club 69 remix. There’s also a one version remixed by Dave Ralph. Again sort of boring and tired.

We have the below four. What do you think? Which is your favorite? Feel free to leave your comments.
