  1. Forever Young (Bill Hamel Album Remix) by Alphaville

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Future Retro is an album certainly worth owning. It has some of the best songs from the 1980s remixed to todays tastes. Mostly club and electronic remixes of well known tracks such as Situation by Yaz, Need You Tonight by Inxs, The Walk by The Cure and many many more cuts. I wanted to post Forever Young today since it’s almost 2011 and I figured a remix of Forever Young by Hamel off of Future Retro would be best!

The remix is excellent and any purists will still dig this remix of Forever Young by the German synth pop band, Alphaville from the 80s. Gosh I love this song and it will always remind me of high school in the 80s! Enjoy!

  2. London In The Rain by Variety Lab Samples Blossom Dearie

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Boy this was a great find. It’s been a while since I first heard it. Going on 10 years now I first heard it on a Hotel Costes Quatre CD and immediately I wanted to know where that sample came from. To my surprise it’s from this beautiful Blossom Dearie recoring called I Like London In The Rain. The marriage of downtempo/chillout electronic music and old jazz recordings is one of my favorite subgenres of music and I enjoy it very much. This track by Variety Lab is one of the finest examples of taking an old jazz song and sampling it and making a totally unique track. If I had to put a top then list of jazz samples London In The Rain by Variety Lab would be in that list and way up top.

The original I Like London In The Rain song is off of Blossom Dearie’s album That’s Just The Way I Want To Be and London In The Rain is off of the Variety Lab CD Providence.

    Both albums highly recommended!

  3. The Gift (Gui Boratto’s Fallopian Mix) by Way Out West

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

The Gift is a classic dance track dating back to 1996 by Way Out West. I remember RCA Records (the US label) had released the CD single to the track of which I had bought having read about it prior. I loved the track a whole lot. It was bouncy, energetic and sort of bordering on progressive drum & bass. It was fun. I’m glad Gui Boratto has given it the 2010 remix treatment to this almost 15 year old track. Those of you that don’t know about this Way Out West track then you certainly have to check it out. It’s certainly a defining moment of 90s electronica/dance.

The Blue album which is also the self titled Way Out West album is classic. There are several excellent cuts on there that are certainly worth owning. Blue, Ajare and of course The Gift. Highly recommended!

  4. Jerome Isma-Ae Remakes The OT Quartet’s Hold That Sucker Down!

Rollo (of Faithless) and Rob D (of Clubbed To Death fame – you know featured on The Matrix Soundtrack) are the O.T. Quartet. They produced this awesome track back in the mid 90s which was a huge hit back then in the club world. It has the trademark Rollo/Cheeky Records sound and I loved it back then and I still love it now. It’s a classic masterpiece that doesn’t get boring after countless listens. I’m glad Jerome Isma-Ae remade it and brought the track into the sound of now at clubs. It’s fun and I dig it and I’m sure you’ll dig it too if you like anything by Faithless or Rollo you will certainly dig Hold That Sucker Down by Jerome Isma-Ae. And if you don’t know anything about The O.T. Quartet then this will certainly be the way for you to discover the great Cheeky Records and Rollo sound. Check out both original and the remake below.

  6. Sucker DJ’s Sample Don Ray With Lotta Lovin’

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Good old disco songs updated? That’s my cup of tea. I love me some disco, one of my favorite genres in the dance electronic genre. I can never get enough of it! If you don’t like disco then I don’t like you! Gosh what the fuck were they thinking of when they were burning and destroying disco records in the late 70s? Americans are so sensitive to dance music! Well they must be sensitive to a lot more because the same freaks did the same thing to the Dixie Chics! Whatever!

Anyways this song is one of my favorite disco songs. Got To Have Loving by Don Ray from the album The Garden Of Love and produced by Cerrone is a classic from the late 70s. The Sucker DJ’s have taken that classic disco tune from the late 70s and have given it the house/club treatment here and sped it up and adapted it to todays ears. It’s not a remix or is it? Are they sampling the song or not? Can’t really tell but whatever it is it’s awesome. Download now and download more from Sucker DJ’s here.

  8. N-Joi Sample Gwen Guthrie’s Peanut Butter On Anthem

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

“I’m In Love With You, Want You To Love Me Too” is the famous line from Peanut Butter by Gwen Guthrie which is sampled in this most famous early house track by N-Joi. Anthem came out in 1991 to blow up everywhere and I was one of the first to get addicted to that famous line sung by Gwen Guthrie. Boy I sure didn’t know at the time that it was a sample being used in that track but later when I found out about it was like I like both tracks. Gwen Guthrie’s 80s sounding funk/hi-nrg style dance sound and of course the house classic by N-Joi. Peanut Butter is off of Gwen Guthrie’s album Portrait. Anthem originally a single in 91 later on the album Inside Out by N-Joi.

  9. Lucky Star 2009 (D.O.N.S. Remix) by Ron Carroll / Superfunk

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

Lucky Star was a pretty big hit back in the late 90s/early 2000′s by Superfunk a French electronica/dance act. I loved the song as it was unique at the time, very soulful house type of a thing which was at the time a trademark sound coming out of the French dance scene.

I love this remix by D.O.N.S. as it’s very updated to todays sound. More electro and more club friendly progressive house type of a think. The soulful house is sort of not there except for Ron Carroll’s vocals. I dig it and I’m sure you will dig it too. Will have to wait for more remixes by Superfunk in the future for sure as this tells me they are willing to do more and more remixes of older hits. Check out both the original 1999 version and the 2009 versions below.

  10. Walking On A Dream (Treasure Fingers Remix) by Empire Of The Sun

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

I have to say Empire Of The Sun’s album Walking On A Dream has been one of my favorite albums of the last couple of years. Their songs are very similar to songs I listened to in my teens in the 80s. The entire album is full of really cool crossover pop/dance/synth songs I listen to over and over.

I was happy to discover a really cool remix of Walking On A Dream too. This Treasure Fingers Remix is right on with quality. I sometimes love some songs too much in their original form that for some odd reason the remix just doesn’t work but it does here. This doesn’t happen too often as I love remixes but sometimes a song is perfect in it’s original form and a remix just doesn’t do justice.

This remix package comes with a couple of other remixes as well including A Neon Neon remix of Walking On A Dream and a Losers Remix of Standing On The Shore. Well worth owning. And if you haven’t even heard of the full length album Walking On A Dream by Empire Of The Sun then you must not be alive so check it out too as it’s got a bunch of cool 80s influenced synth pop!

Here’s a fun bouncy track that does a great job at sampling Deee-Lite’s hit from the early 90s, Groove Is In The Heart. The track Broke basically uses a loop of the main beat/bassline from Groove Is In The Heart and adds some touches of Latin influenced beats and makes it into a cool fun lounge style upbeat cut. Sneaky Fox has other cool cuts that are certainly worth checking into when you have a chance. So once I heard this cut I’m sure more interested in what else they’ve released!

Spacey Electro Disco? Then Marcel Chapman’s new release Take Me is your cup of tea. This release has a very late 70s early 80s synth disco sound that I’m digging. If you are at all a fan of Bottin or Tensnake then the cuts by Marcel Chapman will certainly delight your ears for sure. The album Take Me has a nice mix of disco cuts one after another. This is a nice track that I’ve been enjoying the last couple of months. I love the fact that Tiesto did this with Tegan And Sara. I think more and more collaborations like this should happen and more electronic/club/dance music will climb up the stupid American pop charts. The remix to Feel It In My Bones is alright. It’s been given the uplifting vocal trance treatment bordering on progressive house. I dig it and I’m glad they kept the vocals in there. What do you think?

Kay Starr’s version of I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm is my favorite of that song. When I heard of the remix I even loved it more. It’s been given the upbeat treatment and it’s quite fun. The original is more mellow and slightly sexy with Kay’s beautiful vocals. The remixer on this track is STUHR who I know very little about but damn he did a great job at remixing this track and bringing it to the sound of now. Well the remix is about 5 years old now but still it sounds fresh and it’s one of my all time favorite Christmas songs remixed. From the album Christmas Remixed from Six Degrees Records. 24. Work For Love (Extended Version) by Ministry – The Best Song Never Remade!

     Powered by Max Banner Ads

One of my favorite songs ever from the 1980s is Ministry’s classic new wave synth pop track Work For Love. Gosh the direction they went is completely mind boggling but whatever. I didn’t at all mind them when they went in the industrial direction in the late 80s but after that it was complete punk/speed metal chaos craziness that I didn’t enjoy as much. The album that put them on the map for me is With Sympathy a classic 80s synth pop new wave dance album which includes this song Work For Love and of course Effigy (I’m Not An).

I would love to see one day a great reinterpretation or remix or even a new track that samples this classic 80s cut. Recently Work For Love (Dub Version) was featured on Fabric 43 – the mix CD by Metro Area which was good to hear just after Share The Night (Breakdown Mix) by World Premiere and before Move To The Groove (Instrumental) by Disco Four. It was an awesome mix by Metro Area that I highly recommend and Ministry fit perfectly in the mix. Below is the Extended Version of Work For Love. Those of you that don’t know Ministry’s dance stuff you’ll surely by caught off guard because it’s nothing like really late 80s early to mid 90s stuff they released on Sire/Reprise and Warners label. With Sympathy was released by Arista Records! Enjoy!

This is the track that I skip ahead to over and over again listening to the Berlin Calling Soundtrack. It’s big, fast, somewhat dreamy and very euphoric. I absolutely love it. The Berlin Calling Soundtrack is quite good but I keep coming back to this. I always visualize a dark club, lights blaring in and out and this track blasting out of the speakers. Kind of like the scene in the film Babel. The Japanese scenes in the club. Highly recommend this track and the rest of the Berlin Calling Soundtrack.
